"As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I take a look at my life and realize there’s nothin’ left."

Coolio has died, at the age of 59.

From the NYT obituary:

He told The Independent in 1997 that as a child, he would play board games with his single mother, to whom he later dedicated his success. After a turbulent youth — the bookish, asthmatic child became a teenage gang member, juvenile offender and drug addict — Coolio worked as a volunteer firefighter.

In his 20s, he moved to San Jose to live with his father and fight fires with the California Department of Forestry.... There, he became more spiritual. He later credited Christianity for helping him overcome his addiction to crack....

“Gangsta’s Paradise” had a vast cultural imprint, even spawning a parody in Weird Al Yankovic’s “Amish Paradise” that replaced the streets with pastoral lyrics about churning butter and selling quilts.

Sad. Gangsta’s Paradise is a terrific song - it was a crossover hit, both rap and pop, appealing to a wide audience. May you rest in peace Artis Leon Ivey Jr.

Who's the hot blonde?

It's funny how clichéd this song seems now, but that's only presumably because it invented or popularized all the cliches.

No one to teach him says the son of a single mother. Well taught by the streets since Baby Daddy ankled it long ago. Good song though.

The song (and the movie) didn't convince me that Michelle Pfeiffer was a tough inner-city high school teacher, but it was pretty good nonetheless.

I only learned that earlier today. He really copied the whole song.

If I recall correctly, the school in the movie was in Palo Alto, which is about as far from the inner city as you can get. The kids in question were bussed in from East Palo Alto, which is a separate city in a different county. The good liberals of Palo Alto don't want to be confused with people from EPA. In the movie the inner city kids from EPA get bussed to school in Palo Alto.

Weird Al revived Florence Henderson's career with that song.

The first time I heard of Coolio was when he appeared on a one season sci-fi/war tv episode of a series whose name I can't remember. As I recall he was the host of a "pleasure planet" where the warriors got R & R.

Weird Al had the best cover, but Postmodern Jukebox is pretty good, too:
