"The Defense Department on Monday again said it will not help the District deal with the thousands of migrants who’ve arrived on buses from Texas and Arizona..."

"... upholding the department’s previous denial of D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser’s earlier request for National Guard deployment. In a letter to Bowser (D), Pentagon Executive Secretary Kelly Bulliner Holly outlined a host of reasons National Guard troops can’t be deployed, including the fact that its members are not trained to provide the type of services that would be required to help the migrants, including feeding, sanitation and management of a central processing facility. More than 7,000 migrants from countries such as Venezuela or Nicaragua have arrived at Union Station on buses since Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) began offering the free rides in April to highlight what he had called lax border enforcement policies by the Biden administration. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) followed suit in May."

"More than 7,000 migrants... since... April" — but what is the number of migrants who came to Texas and Arizona since April and have not yet moved on to other states? Is 7,000 supposed to look like a huge number or a tiny number? And is it a military problem or not? Bowser proposes to militarize it within Washington, but would she view the entire migration across the southern border as a military problem?

A week ago, I was blogging about the WaPo article "Six drastic plans Trump is already promising for a second term." One of the 6 "drastic" things was a readiness to use the National Guard "against crime, unrest and protests":
His recent speeches showed a greater determination to use the National Guard or the military in the future.

“The next president should use every power at his disposal to restore order, and if necessary, that includes sending in the National Guard or the troops,” Trump said at CPAC on Aug. 6. “I think the next time, either we’re going for a very quick change or we’re sending them in.”

Future efforts to deploy the military domestically or impose martial law could prompt resistance or even resignations from military brass.

Would a Trump administration have sent Bowser her National Guard? (I'm presuming the Abbot/Ducey busing program would still have happened, but perhaps not.)

A Trump administration was building a wall to reduce trafficking (e.g. fentanyl) and control border violence (e.g. rape of women and girls in transit). The administration pursued a policy of emigration reform in collusion with foreign national leaders in order to mitigate the progress of immigration reform and collateral damage at both ends of the bridge and throughout.

The Trump administration wouldn't send the Guard because that was for law and order purposes and we all know it's racist to assume the illegal ali...sorry, "migrants," are not going to obey the law.

we can ALL Agree, that This is UNACCEPTABLE !
3 THOUSAND undocumented democrats flooding into the District is CRAZY! and HORRIBLE!
DC Already votes over 90% democrat.. It does NOT Need and new voters.
These undocumented deomcrats NEED TO STAY in places like Texas, where their votes will matter
SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE!!
i propose, a WALL being built around the District, so that ONLY PROPER PEOPLE are allowed in!

7,000? That's it? Out of the 5 million that have come in since Biden took office?
Why isn't she saying, "Keep 'em coming"?

The army can’t send troops to DC or they would be obligated to send them to any city that had illegal immigrants. I would also suspect that the army did not like how DC treated them during the occupation of DC by Federal Troops.

I’ve never been in the guard but aren’t those the exact services on the list of things they’re trained to provide?

..at least digging latrines?

Well, the busing to DC and NYC has certainly finally got the WaPo and NYTimes covering the border problem. Now those who still consider those papers legitimate news will be forced to learn of it.

Been a long long time since a president federalized the national guard to enforce the law. It happened during the school desegregation battles that followed Brown v. Board, but the the point of that exercise was to prevent state authorities from carrying out their stated intentions to violate the federal civil rights of the students as established by federal court decrees. In contrast, most of the criminal conduct Trump and others are discussing is a matter of state criminal law rather than any federal law. Hard to see how any federal official can usurp the authority of state officials to enforce (or not) state law. Even harder to see how anyone claiming to act on conservative principles could support that effort. But we live in strange and unprincipled times.

Poor DC! They can’t handle what Texas gets in a day. If DC really wants to be a sanctuary city, they need to belly up to the bar. Abbot needs more buses.
DC has so mishandled their homeless situation it’s deplorable. During the first winter of COVID, following CDC guidance, DC emptied many of their homeless housing units to ensure separation. Homeless advocates bought tents for many of them and the result is now that the homeless are living under overpasses, on sidewalks and on the lawn of Union Station. If DC were serious about this issue, they would beg the President to stop the illegal immigration at the border and get their own house in order. Having the immigrants in DC will keep the pressure on DC to make the call.

Hysterical. In a recent thread you expressed relief Trump wasn't President based on some unsupported assertion. But you don't really know enough about him to answer that question.

“More than 7,000 migrants moved to NYC and DC since April…”

My question is: What’s the real, total number of illegal migrants that have been transported at taxpayer expense to NYC and DC over the last 18 months and what percentage are a result of Abbot and Doucy’s recent actions?

My guess is a majority were relocated by the Biden administration’s actions, but AZ and TX are receiving the blame.

Sending millions and millions of hard-working newly-minted Mexican-Americans to our nation's capital is the absolute best way to break the back of the Democrat Party.

Seeing as how it dilutes the impact of the once-powerful black vote.

Any Republican governor NOT bussing this is showing their true loyalties. Remember how your stance on bussing showed your loyalties back in the day? Well they're here again.

Black America better reign in your little 80-million vote President before ya'll become actual minorities again. Or worse: Employees. So to speak. To coin a phrase. Euphamism.

"Oh, I wish I was in the land of cotton" ... well, we don't have to spell it out for you do we? Not forgotten.

Progressive mayors have extolled the virtues of their sanctuary cities for years.

Now they get to walk the walk, rather than just talk the talk.

You wanna be morally superior to all the deplorables out there?

Then step up to the plate, NYC and DC. And don't ask for the National Guard or the Regular Military to bail you out; their real job is to kill people and break things.

As my T-shirt with the 3rd MAR DIV on Okinawa said back in 1981: "When you absolutely, positively need it destroyed overnight, there is only one choice: the US Marine Corps."

Strange question with an obvious answer. Donald Trump did not release the National Guard to protect the Capitol, Congress, and the Capitol police on January 6, 2021, despite pleas from the mayor.

Donald lied and people died.

Buckwheathikes. Black people are also opposed to illegal immigration. Some of their political leaders may be hypocrites, but your comment about black America is inappropriate. Liberal whites, as much as anybody else, made Biden president and created the disaster we have. The bussing is great and they should bus them to the Hamptons, Martha's vineyard and to other such places.

Send them to Delaware. Joe is using our tax money to buy HIMSELF a wall to keep us away from him. Let HIM deal with the illegals here because HE INVITED THEM, and did nothing to stop the flow. Let Rehoboth Beach deal with his problems that HE caused.

An utter lie. I have it on authority from a National Guard Col. working in planning at the Pentagon at the time that Trump offered National Guard to Bowser ahead of the rally, and she declined.

Muriel Bowser shied and people died.

The Debate Bowser has thrust on the DC National Guard, would carry a precarious precedent.

IF the National Guard is able to help DC, then the next President would be without restraint, able to use all 51 Guard units at the southern border.

Several have already 'pounced' on this lie.

It does however point to the FACT, Biden could order the Guard up to help. If the politics were reversed, the media would be wailing about the incompetence of a Republican President shirking his duties.

Actually that might not be a bad idea. They'd be enjoying a long term sojourn in a Texas jail in less than a week.

By the way, I like the way you compared "migrants" with criminals.

So you are admitting that a large number of law-breakers thrust upon a community can have a detrimental effect on that community. I'm glad you have admitted there is a problem. That's the first step in resolving it.
