"[Lia] Thomas and her rise... forced the typically plodding N.C.A.A. to grapple more quickly with a subject that scientists are still examining and its consequences for sports competitions."

"Comprehensive research in athletes is still lacking, but early studies suggest that suppressing testosterone in transgender women decreases muscle mass and hemoglobin levels, reducing how much oxygen can be carried through the bloodstream. Most of the changes occur within the first year of hormone suppression, but transgender women may still have more muscle mass than their cisgender peers even after three years. As some insist that no amount of testosterone suppression can undo the physiological changes linked to male puberty, like taller height and larger hands and feet, others dispute that transgender women have a built-in advantage and have argued that inclusion should outweigh competition."

From "Lia Thomas Wins an N.C.A.A. Swimming Title/With her victory in Atlanta, Thomas, who competes for the University of Pennsylvania, became the first openly transgender woman to win an N.C.A.A. swimming championship" (NYT).

Here's the ESPN coverage: "Amid protests, Penn swimmer Lia Thomas becomes first known transgender athlete to win Division I national championship."

The race began with the crowd cheering for each of the swimmers, but fans were noticeably quiet for Thomas' introduction.... As she stood on the podium with her trophy, she flashed a peace sign, just as she did for her four Ivy League championships. And once again, the crowd was noticeably quiet as she was announced as the champion....

Outside of the McAuley Center, dueling protests dominated the morning. More than 20 protesters from Save Women's Sports and Young Women for America (the college branch of Concerned Women for America) chanted outside...

"We're not going to stand by and let women be displaced," said Annabelle Rutledge, the national director for Young Women for America. "We must fight for their rights."

Concerned Women for America announced Thursday that the organization filed a Title IX complaint against the University of Pennsylvania....

And at Swimming World, from John Lohn, the editor-in-chief, there's "NCAA Title For Lia Thomas Is Joke With Biological Women As Punchline; Hardly a Laughing Matter":

Because the NCAA only required one year of hormone-suppressant therapy for a transgender female to compete in women’s sports, Thomas was eligible to race for the Quakers. And, to be clear, Thomas has followed all rules.

The problem is that the NCAA’s guidelines were based on outdated science and didn’t account for the advantages of Thomas undergoing male puberty and significant testosterone production. A 6-3 frame. Greater natural strength. Larger hands and feet. Enhanced lung capacity. None of these edges, for the record, can be fully mitigated....

When the Ivy League and Penn told swimmers to accept the situation, it was clear that one person’s rights were valued over hundreds of others. And when the NCAA made it clear it would not protect women’s rights, it was obvious the NCAA Championships would become a circus – a combination of protestors appearing and Thomas swimming with her male-puberty-supplied jet pack.

Swimming World... called for her to not race at the NCAA Championships, but to be given an alternative opportunity to display her talent in the pool. Because we took that approach, the transgender community and its supporters fired off accusations of transphobia....

“Girls and women shouldn’t give up their hard-won sports opportunities, no matter how real the harms suffered by transgender athletes,” Hogshead-Makar wrote in a December editorial. “Allowing transgender women to change the meaning of the women’s category makes as much sense as allowing 180-pound athletes into the 120-pound weight category, because larger athletes were subject to awful bullying and harassment. Or allowing adults to compete against children, or only permitting impoverished nations compete in the Olympics. Sport has been set up as binary with males and females, and sport needs to adapt by adding new events and classifications, rather than throwing out the meaning of the ‘girls’ and ‘women’s’ categories. Rather than trying to squeeze transgender athletes into one-of-two categories, male or female, sport needs to adapt.”

Nice propaganda tactic that "some insist". There is no hormone therapy that makes people shorter or shrinks their hands and feet.

"inclusion should outweigh competition"

Why should inclusion exclude opportunities for women born as women?

Where will transmen be included? With the men? Or in a different category?

Lots of solutions imaginable, if fairness to actual women is a priority. Of course, since we're talking prog ideology, it isn't. As long as women are too scared to stand up, it won't be.

But you could have an open category, open to all, and one for women born as women, or a men, women, and trans division.

Forget the undeniable advantages gained from male puberty, male and females are structurally different. The male pelvic bone is different than a female's and it allows better leverage for the leg muscles and similar differences exist in other parts of the body. That's why "throws like a girl" is a real thing. As is running like a girl. And no amount of hormone therapy and mutilating surgery will ever change that.

I figured the previous banned use of growth hormones would have prevented this situation. We really have to "get beyond the binary". There aren't just "men" and "women". There are XX men and XY men and XX women and XY women and a number of even smaller boxes. XX women tend to be bigger and stronger than XY women. Depending on how many they are, they could dominate women's sports that require size and strength.

It's pretty simple - competitive categories in sports need to reflect government forms: male, female, other. Once that's done, we can start to fight about equity in salaries for the Other NBA, the Other World Soccer Organization, etc.

But not for the WNFL or the ONFL. I wonder why that would be?

I am bothered. Relatedly, one of the cable networks- it's Lifetime or TLC or something- is participating in Women's History Month by having HerStory told to "Celebrate Women of All Kinds". The woman doing the ads for the introduction is Laverne Cox. Now, I'm certain she had a whole big set of experiences growing up. But are we so past women as women that we can't have a whole-life woman be the host of the program? Are we so unimportant? Is the experience of growing up as a woman so meaningless? If so, why "women's history month" at all?

Thomas can showcase his talent as a trans woman in the men's pool.

Why subject all the women to an unfair disadvantage when Thomas can compete against the men and no one is at a biological disadvantage, with only Thomas' feelings on the matter being affected?

Thomas can be introduced as the first place trans woman competing in the men's competition. (S)He will additionally place according to her biological gender. So 1st place trans category and 10th place overall.

This is the only way to do it that doesn't rob women of a chance to compete and allows Thomas the chance to compete against high caliber athletes.

If there are more trans athletes they'd additionally be ranked overall and within the trans category for the podium.

If it's a hollow victory for Thomas to get to podium in a competition of 1/1 then it's equally hollow for Thomas to beat up on girls in the pool and stand on the podium with an astrix after her name.

True competitors want to compete against the best. Thomas isn't doing that. The women don't compete against the men because they know at the elite level it's no competition and there's nothing they can do to change that.

Thomas on the other hand is capable of competition against the best

Perhaps just attaching a few cinderblocks to each athlete with padlocked chains would even things out to the satisfaction of all, competition and government alike. And in all fairness, if they all sink to the bottom of the pool then equity has been achieved, right?

Somehow lost in all of this is the idea that participating in the NCAA Women's Swimming programs is a right. It is not a right. No one has the 'right' to participate. That's ludicrous. The NCAA, which is perhaps the worst sports organization operating today, cannot get out of it's own way when it comes to any of the sports it oversees. (they're so awful when it comes to football, a number of conferences are talking about leaving and forming a new organization).

What they have to do first, is remember that they are adults, even though they are attached to universities. Then they have to set clear standards. And those standards cannot include 'the right' to participate. It's simply not a right. He/she did participate as a man. For three years. So clearly, as he/she has spent 99% of his/her life as a man, it's pretty clear...this person is in a man's body.

That crosses the line of a standard to participate in women's sports. Instead of bending reality to fit one (or 30 or 300) person's wants, its time the NCAA assert some simple and clear standards. Call a spade a spade. This is what a man is. This is what a woman is. If you are a trans person- great! We'll support you in school, we're all for you living your life as you wish. But you do not have a right to participate in NCAA Sports unless you follow the standards. And in this case, a trans woman would not. Lia has no claim on this. It is utterly ridiculous that we're even having to watch this cartoon take place.

This change in life is Lia's decision. Her demand to swim on the women's team shows no bravery. It shows selfishness and a complete lack of respect for all others around her. It's all about her. And ESPN, not surprisingly, is all about playing it up.

"others dispute that transgender women have a built-in advantage and have argued that inclusion should outweigh competition."

We are ignoring the "legal principle" of disparate impact. We settle the statement that "others dispute that transgender women have a built-in advantage" by looking at how many standard deviations trans gender people perform above birth genders. if it goes one way, male to female or female to male, and not the other then we can find significant evidence (say +2 sigma) that trans genders do have an advantage, and argue whether it is built in, whatever that means. This works with a sample size of one, if the effect is great, but you can argue that the one person you sampled is not a typical specimen.

I don't recall any female to male athletes who are medalists in the NCAA. If none are in competition, that is evidence that they are not likely to win.

The Trans Movement is the next project for those who were involved in the rapid shift in public opinion and laws regarding gay & lesbian rights (1990-2010). The victory for this "Equal Rights" Movement, which had just succeeded much more quickly than many would have ever predicted, boosted their confidence and added a tone of self-righteousness. They are not interested in open debate, implying as it does, that there can be more than one way to look at things. The language and tactics on display mirror those from the previous battle, with the extra spin imparted now by the Wokerati, who regulate the public arena where the contenders make their case. Despite their best efforts to favor the Trans activists, I wonder of this is too big a leap.

Gay & lesbian people really have been a part of the human family forever, even when they lived in societies where this was cause for unfair treatment by other people, or the State. Most Americans sense this is true, and they have been largely welcomed into their communities over the last 10-20 years. This is a good thing.

Trans activists however, represent a new category. Humans have not evolved with the medical technology of 2022, and many do not instinctively accept the idea that sex identity is a social construct and a matter of choice. This is a very different concept and I think the Movement is likely to inspire a backlash as the public tolerance for BS is exhausted.

From the article, "The problem is that the NCAA’s guidelines were based on outdated science and didn’t account for the advantages of Thomas undergoing male puberty and significant testosterone production."

Swimming World is being a too charitable with that sentence. The NCAA didn't base their guidelines on any science. If they say they did, let's see the research that conflicted with decades of prior practice, then was overturned five years later with more advanced research.

In my opinion, the NCAA acted cowardly by disrespecting the training and effort of women athletes in order to satisfy the pink mafia.

William ‘Lia’ Thomas is a man pretending to be a woman, and everyone knows it.  But Willy’s right to pretend, and to ‘win’ an unfair competition must be protected, because it aids in the destruction of Christendom.

Nothing else needs to be said.

“Where do you suppose they go to all get on the same page of lies? Do they have secret decoder watches that tell them what transparent falsehood they should all spew today? Maybe they have chips implanted in their brains. Behind the masks they all wear ...”
_____________

They get it from the NYTimes, the WaPo, the Nation, NPR, etc.  Those sources in turn get it from the “activists,” and college professors who are dedicated to destroying Christendom.

It’s easy to see how this works, if you have the courage to look.  When dealing with them, just think “They’re the Nazis, we’re the Jews.  They’re the Communists, we’re the kulaks.”

It's extremely unlikely that closeted transsexual women competed before, but intersex people could well have been. Four were barred from competing as women in track events in the 2021 Olympics. Of course, none had as much of an advantage as Thomas did.

Next we have to allow 16 year olds to play tee ball with first graders, they identify as 6 year olds. Hero’s and sluggers all.

There are reports that NBC filtered or photoshopped Lia's picture to remove the suggestion of facial hair. The traces weren't very noticeable, but the network wasn't taking any chances.

That was my thought too. Even at my advanced age I would RULE as the goalie in youth 7-8 year old soccer.

I'm planning the trophy case now.

Now that HE has his ill-gotten gains, I wonder if he will change his mind again and detransition?

After all, if you can become a woman simply by stating that you are one, you can become a man the same way, right?
