"The chief said no one was shot after Riley body-slammed him."

Said Natalie Henry-Howell, the mother of Riley Howell. She's quoted in "Riley Howell’s Parents Say He Was Shot 3 Times While Tackling the U.N.C. Charlotte Gunman" (NYT).
A bullet to the torso did not stop Riley Howell. A second bullet to the body did not prevent him from reaching his goal and hurling himself at the gunman who opened fire last week inside a classroom at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The third bullet came as Mr. Howell was inches from the gunman, who fired at point-blank range into his head.

Mr. Howell’s parents said their 21-year-old son, who is being heralded for his bravery, was shot at least three times. He tackled the gunman so forcefully that the suspect complained to first responders after his arrest of internal injuries, the parents said the authorities told them.

Thomas Howell, 48, who works as a trauma nurse, said he saw his son’s body and viewed evidence suggesting that the gun muzzle was pressed against his son’s skin when he was shot for the third time, either as he and the gunman fell or were on the ground.

“This was burned,” Mr. Howell said, pointing to a spot along the jawbone near his right ear. “That bullet went up into his brain and killed him.”
The article goes into some other incidences of people stopping an active shooter and there is also much more about Riley Howell. Excerpt:

Born Dec. 13, 1997, Mr. Howell grew up on a 100-acre “gentleman’s farm,” as his mother called it, on the edge of a small town in the Great Smoky Mountains. The families of his parents live in the area.

The first grandchild on both sides, he was doted on by aunts, uncles and grandparents. As the eldest of his generation, he was the cousin-in-chief, leader of hikes and the designated shark in rowdy swimming games.

“I remember being little, and I named all my boy Barbies after Riley because I thought he looked like them — he looked like Ken,” said Katie Pritchard, 17, a cousin.

As a toddler, he spent time with a deaf uncle and used sign language before he spoke, said his mother, who is 48 and a teacher.

Her son was not a young man who played it safe, she said. He jumped without trepidation from high rocks into the ocean and worked a chainsaw on the farm.

He was also a deep scholar of Star Wars, amassing a legion of Jedi action figures with his brother Ted, 14. He cooked on a cast iron skillet he got for Christmas, fixed up junk cars and was an avid target shooter, but not a hunter....

And he was handy, an uncommon quality among many young men, who do not have the slightest idea how to fix things, said another sister, Iris, 19. “Guys his age looked up to him because he was a jack-of-all-trades,” she said....

His mane of wavy blond hair and muscular physique threw people off, including, initially, Mr. Westmoreland, who said he was wary of this “big, handsome boy” dating his daughter.... “People thought he was going to be a jerk or something, a big old gym guy, but he was just, like, the biggest dork I’d ever met,” Ms. Westmoreland said....

He spent two years at a technical college, which he attended largely to please his parents, Mrs. Henry-Howell said, and scheduled classes around his work at a landscaping company. By the time he enrolled at U.N.C. Charlotte last fall, he had become absorbed by horticulture....

He sounds like my son. We were running a simulation of a trauma case in ICU and I was going to have my son be the patient but I got bad vibes and did not do it. That was when he was about 19. We celebrated his 50th birthday last week. This kid should have been able to do the same. God damn these freaks who try to kill.

He was a true hero, putting his own life below that of others. It is akin to falling on a grenade in a trench to save one's comrades.

If he had been carrying, he could have perhaps saved his own life as well.

Whatever is this young man's history, when the time came, he saw his duty & he did it. No one can ask more of another human being than was asked of Mr. Howell, and he came through with the best.

It's probably a cold comfort to the family & friends to know that he died as he did. They would just want him back as a live "normal" kid, and not a dead hero. But, at least, the right thing was done and he was given military honors at his funeral.

We're not a culture that truly appreciates this sort of heroism anymore, and we're the poorer for it. No one will write an "Horatio at the Bridge" type poem for this young man, even though he so richly deserves it.

If Riley, or any of the people in the area, had been allowed to carry a gun and defend himself he would be alive today.

His blood is on the hands of every gun grabbing leftist.

He is a hero.

They are the opposite.

The world is now short of a young man who exhibited all the traits that the country, world needs. We have an excess mouth breather wasting oxygen that could best be used by someone else.

Is there a some sort of civilian medal of honor he could be awarded posthumously? It won't bring him back for his family, but as was said above, he did the equivalent of throwing himself on a grenade.

James K said...

To answer my own question, the Presidential Medal of Freedom can be awarded posthumously. This guy deserves at least that.

I was shot at once, ran right at the guy and he ran away. I bet more people would do something similar if they weren't being taught to hide or run away.

Scots-Irish white privilege is with us yet. As the Germans and the Japs saw when they attacked outgunned Americans, we decide to take as many of them with us as possible. Killing us is not cheap.

And let’s not forget Peter Wang, a JROTC cadet who died aiding other students to get away from Nikolas Cruz in the Stoneman-Douglas HS in Parkland, Florida while the school resource officer and other members of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office cowered outside. Yet the nattering classes have made the eponymous David Hogg, who was never in the building where the shooting occurred, as the face of the tragedy.

I did not mean to give an impression that anyone has shot at my son. He is a big athletic guy who is a fireman and paramedic.

Westmoreland could be a a transliteration from the Hungarian.

Fernandistein is on to something.

The standard guidance is Run/Hide/Fight. In that order.

But wouldn't casualties be minimized (both short- and long-term) if people were trained to swarm a shooter? Imagine a gunman trying to deal with 7-8 people rushing directly at them in the first few seconds of such an event.

That's not an event that's going to last very long.

Fran Waxman said...

Trump said someone should charge the gunman. Anyone but he should do it. He wants to watch the bravery on TV, so he can applaud the "hero" like you did. Trump got out of Vietnam by claiming born spurs. He's some hero.

Everything depends on the circumstances. In the best case the shooter is in the middle of a large room with many people rushing from all sides. There's going to be a different outcome if the shooter is standing at a door where people must converge before reaching him or there are fewer people per room.

It's revealing people are compelled to interrupt a tribute post to express their Trump hatred.

To me this will always recall Dem hypocrisy in defending Clinton's draft avoidance - which the right accepted - only to turn around and attack first Bush and then Trump. They even lied whenever possible. It's worse because these critics don't care about serving America. This is just an available attack so of course they will take the opportunity.

Fuck that.

In any group of people in public at least 2 should be well trained, pull out their guns, and shoot this person repeatedly.

There is no reason Riley should not have been armed as an ROTC cadet.

He should have had the means to defend himself and everyone in the area.

He should be alive today.

The administrators at that college should be held personally liable for their policy that forced him to be unarmed and unable to defend himself.

People who attack the second amendment and run on policies of gun control should be tarred and feathered.

Riley is dead because our society is full of cowardice and tyranny.

Actually I am a Vietnam Era veteran, though fortunately I did not server over there. Lots of us didn't actually spend time in the rice paddies.

Please do not get me started on John Kerry. Suffice it to say that his peers who served with him did not think highly of him.

What a brave man. I guess people put pressure on the MSM, so they finally, reluctantly told of the story of white man who saved everyone. Usually I wouldn't write "white man" but if he'd been black and the killer white - the MSM would never shut up about their skin color.

It's too bad the killer lived. I was hoping he'd been shot "while trying to escape".

You were right to do so, but its counter-intuitive to run TOWARD danger. Most people just freeze, hide, or try to run away. That's the wrong thing to do, but the natural one.

Two observations, but first let me express my utmost respect for Mr. Howell.

1. Yes, if the "official" advice were Fight/Run/Hide, then quite a few outcomes would be better. Compare this to the "official" advice in dealing with hijacking, which ordinary Americans -- without any official sanction, it should be pointed out -- figured out and discarded with only a few minutes' thought on flight 93.

2. This sure shows the folley of those who want to restrict magazine capacity.

No person who carries a gun and wants others to have the same rights would support democrats.

Nobody who knows a thing about guns thinks a 38 special is going to be of any practical use in a civil war.
