April 27, 2017

"You have seen how much power we have downtown and that the police cannot stop us from shutting down roads so please consider your decision wisely."

Said the anonymous email that caused Portland to cancel its Rose Festival Parade, WaPo reports.
Set to march in the parade’s 67th spot this year was the Multnomah County Republican Party, a fact that so outraged two self-described antifascist groups in the deep blue Oregon city that they pledged to protest and disrupt the April 29 event.

Then came an anonymous and ominous email, according to parade organizers, that instructed them to cancel the GOP group’s registration — or else...  200 people would “rush into the parade” and “drag and push” those marching with the Republican Party.

“We will not give one inch to groups who espouse hatred toward LGBT, immigrants, people of color or others,” it said....
So now that's all it takes to end freedom of expression in Portland. What a flimsy, pathetic place.

And it was only a threat to drag and push a specific set of people who were going to be present at a particular place and time. Do the police in Portland not know how to manage crowds? Let the parade happen, let the protesters arrive and protest, and deal with the situation as it unfolds. If you won't do that, you don't have a free society.

ADDED: The threat to shut down roads is particularly absurd to me after what I've seen in Madison down at the state capitol. When the protesters were coming, the police themselves would shut down the roads to make it easier on everyone. I've also seen the police here deal with situations where they knew antagonistic groups were going to be in the same place at the same time. There are techniques for this. You don't just give up and say now we can't assemble in groups anymore.

The Rose Parade was part of East Portland's attempts at economic development. According to an article I recently read, East Portland has taken it in the shorts since being annexed by white liberal Portland. An example was that when sewers lines needed work in East Portland the residents had to pay up for their portion but when a big sewer renovation was needed for white liberal Portland, the city passed the hat to everybody. Once again E. Portland is abused by the right thinkers.

Portland went for Hillary 74 to 19 percent. So Republicans are a small minority, only 60,000 people. The other 270,000 are OK with beating up the 60,000. Because - liberal fascist.

Or - why not put the 60,000 Republicans in camps to protect them? Camps out in the country-side. Oh wait - the percentages are reversed out in the countryside. So maybe not a good idea. Any of it.

Human nature is fairly consistent. The group with a power advantage desiring to repress opposition where they can. You see it everywhere--school boards; city councils; on Facebook, Yahoo, and Twitter; in the South during the Reconstruction; in the South during the Jim Crow era; throughout the country during the McCarthy era; during the last two years with BLM; and now in Berkeley and Portland during the Antifa era.

The local authorities in Berkeley or Portland--see the cops in various videos--are no more likely to intervene on behalf of the disfavored group of rightward students than Bull Connor was likely to intervene to protect the Civil Rights Marchers if they were attacked by the KKK. They are on the side of the Antifa fascists.

Coulter, Milo, Ben Shapiro, and others can attempt to highlight this violation of First Amendment principles, but the local civil authorities in Berkeley and Portland will continue to cast the blame on the visiting speakers and their local sponsers rather than the thugs. Just like Alabama in the 1960s.

Honestly, the right is now going to start engaging in the same sorts of threats and violence. Because *it works.* I hate to say that, but I've officially lost. There will be no moderate voices left in the Republican party because the left was unwilling to rein in the people on the left who wanted to use violence against the right.

So, now the right is going to look at people like me and say, "Why, Matt, exactly should we NOT violently protest and break things? That's allowed now, and it gets results. If we listen to you, our people get beaten and silenced."

The left made the new rules; I hope they understand what we all have to live with now.

This is the Left honing its tactics. They have learned how to publicly attack individuals and force them from public life, with accusations of thought crimes, such as donating money to "homophobic" initiatives or "racism". And they are learning to use the threat of public violence to intimidate and control organizations.

This is only possible because their threats are credible. And that is because the democratically-elected "authorities" are in sympathy with their purported goals. Of course, those goals are wholly spurious. The goal is power. But they seem to have forgotten Mao's trenchant observation on the provenance of power. It didn't involve pens and swords.

Portland needs to prioritize training their police so they can actually protect their citizens, doubt that will happen in such a deep blue city until the anarchists start targeting fellow Democrats.

Actually, the last time I encountered that problem was in Portland. I was driving up to the airport to fly to Mexico, a week after some beat cop decided on the spur of the moment that she wanted to help out in a drug bust. She didn't have a flack jacket, but you can't say "No" to a woman. The Portland PD shut down every major road in East Portland for her funeral, including the freeways. Patrol cars with lights flashing, blocking traffic at every on-ramp. The place is a madhouse, I don't know how anyone can live there.

Sounds like that place is out of control. When I lived in DC, street closures were pretty regular (someone's always got a protest or march planned), and in Baltimore it was getting that way too with the Freddie Gray marches (not even counting the actual riot). Traffic is already a mess, but that sort of thing (often at rush hour) makes it unbearable.

Let people book plazas and parks, and not block roads under any circumstances. If they do that, scoop them up in mass arrests. The city is for everyone, but we have to play by reasonable rules.

And that is totally wrong! Why, your buddies who think that stomping on anyone in a MAGA hat is a great idea--they might be hurt! They might--gasp! -- not try to stomp on little old ladies in a Trump shirt, for fear she might defend herself!

And above all, ARM, you support people in Trump gear or Republicans being beaten, maimed, and hurt, don't you.

I suppose ARM was cheering the riot in DC where Soros' paid goons literally invaded the Heritage Foundation building--breaking, entreating, violence, etc.

And then when they found out a Washington Examiner reporter had embedded with them and recorded the training and bussing they got, they called the cops--to remove him. And the cops who provided traffic support for the rioters and let them invade and vandalize the Heritage Foundation building (while the staffers were inside, terrified at the terrorist event taking place), the cops came and removed the reporter, letting the rioters continue.

So pardon me if I don't trust anything from the cops or the prosecutors in these leftist towns. They are nothing more than the political officers of Soviet Union fame.

"Marc Hokoana messaged a friend on Facebook the day before Yiannopoulos was scheduled to talk and said he “can’t wait for tomorrow”, according to police officials. In the Facebook message, obtained by a search warrant, he wrote: “I’m going to the Milo event and if the snowflakes get out off hand I’m just going to wade through their ranks and start cracking skulls.”"

"In an interview with the Guardian, Dukes recalled thinking when he was shot: “I’m not dead right now so I haven’t been shot in the heart.”The bullet went in through his abdomen and exited his back. Two months later, he still bears an oozing wound and a long surgical scar. He has lost his gall bladder and half his colon. His liver was severely damaged; his diaphragm pierced."

Also, I find it hard to believe. For us to believe Dukes, we have to assume that every police and medical responder was incompetent and unable to identify the weapons he was carrying. We also then have to believe that despite the social media posts that have no bearing on the actual incident of violence, where we have to look to determine if it was self-defense, the police have not managed to see video that proves they were the aggressors (which would have been leaked by now.)

Further, do you agree that people who don't support LGBT rights should be beaten senseless as this letter says?

I note that all of that "LGBT rights will never hurt anyone" is, once again and as predicted by us at the time, a complete utter lie. Now your very life is in danger from left wing loons like ARM supports for disagreeing with them.

I suppose Catholic, Baptist, Mormon, etc churches and congregations in Portland now need armed protection from your buddies, ARM, else they are in danger of being beaten. Of course, you would support that, it appears. And only complain if some of the church goers brought weapons to keep their congregations safe from people like you and your friends. Right?

No cop is going to put that pension at risk. Thus, when the mayor passes the word that the police should stand back, they stand back. They are bought and paid for. They cannot be shamed.

You cannot count on the police to protect you. Under orders, they may well be hostile to you.

I first tried hooking up with the Black Lives Matter crowd, but they didn't have a lot of respect for white guys with dreadlocks like me. And some of those Black Dudes were SCARY. Like they had even been in jail and stuff. But the Antifa: there aren't a lot of minorities involved, which is good, because I want to hook up with White Chicks...

I remember at my first Protest when things got Real: I pepper-sprayed an old lady, and this Antifa Chick gave me a blow-job that same night! Right on! She was kind of meth-y, but I figure as I get Bigger Cred I'll get nicer Chicks, or at least ones where I don't have to worry about Herpes so much...

This one College Girl started coming to our meetings, and she was Hot! Real clean, too: you don't see Clean a lot at our meetings. And a tiny little nose ring on the side of her nose -- that's soooo Sexy! Of course, the other Chicks hated her, but all the guys wanted to impress her with their stories. I need better stories: pepper-spraying an Old Lady is pretty low on the Bad Ass scale, I know...

The Truth is, I don't really like fighting that much: I was beaten up a lot as a kid, because I was weird and didn't take showers very often. But at the Protests the Police keep it from getting too out of hand, so I feel pretty safe. I think I'm even ready to throw a punch now, if I can find an Old Guy who doesn't look too dangerous. For most of the last 100 years, Americans have looked up and valued people who hurt communist shock troops. We call them "Heroes." And we paid the cost to have the best military in the world so we could have lots of people who knew how to take out lots of communist shock troops.

Could you please clarify? Are you disappointed that the folks being attacked by the antifa thugs did not receive proper police protection and were forced to protect themselves or that they actually protected themselves instead of allowing themselves to be beat up?

As it has been repeatedly pointed out here and elsewhere, incentives matter. Libiral America is incentivizing violence by not only tolerating it in these fascists but also refusing to protect fundamental rights. Once enough folks on the right of this political divide learn that lesson, school will really start and folks like you will only have yourselves to blame.

ARM, man. Get over it. You are siding with the fascist left here. Do you also plead for sympathy to the thugs who break into houses and then get put down by the little girl with the gun they were going to rape and murder?

Apparently you do. Why do you protect leftist thugs?

In movies, when the Nazi coming over the trench gets shot in the chest, do we cheer? Well, Americans do. Apparently, you want the movie to go like this: "Nazi emerges, screaming as he runs towards the protagonist. Protagonists cowers, drops his gun, and is repeatedly stabbed by Nazi, who then makes him watch the Nazi stripping his wife while she is screaming. The last thing our protagonist sees as his life ebbs away is the Nazi shouting "Heil Hitler" as he starts raping the mans wife." That's your idea of a great movie, and how life should be, right ARM? Because you are clearly on the side of the Nazis and brownshirts here. Just admit it.

They did use the magic word.

ARM would be one with Gandhi who told the British to surrender to the Nazis as they would maintain their "moral superiority" even as they were brutalized and massacred.

This is America where people moved to avoid that attitude. I don;t sympathize t-with the two people arrested if they sought out the violence for some personal thrill but this is what will happen as leftist violence is allowed to metastasize with no police action.

This was behind the "Broken Windows" theory of policing that gave New York City the low crime rate that DeBlasio thinks is the normal state of affairs.

The left does not understand entropy.

I've been following this event closely, and I've never seen a description of the wounds. Why did you fail to provide a link?

Description was in link I provided earlier in thread, which I also quoted then.

To say I am disappointed is only to acknowledge the limitations of the English language.

Perhaps you should try German then. It has some wonderfully descriptive words.

Schaudenfreude is one example.

Except ARM doesn't think the conservatives and Trump supporters have moral superiority whether they fight back or not. He wants them to just stay home and shut up and defer to liberal authorities. Simply showing up at a Trump rally or to hear Milo or Coulter speak is asking for it. Antifas are justified in beating uppity conservatives if they dare show themselves at such gatherings.

ARM: "So this seems to be the prevailing attitude towards this horrific shooting at the University of Washington."

The only "horrific" thing here is that the woman being attacked by the lefty thug (but I repeat myself) dude didn't put one through his empty cranium.

A few practice rounds at the range should help close that performance deficiency.

We see the left's real intent amply demonstrated in venezuela and, oddly enough, I believe the conservatives here have decided not to allow these "heroes of the revolution" to continue attacking without resistance.

Next up for ARM and the lads: claims that the this latest Bergdahl-like revolutionary had his "hands up" and was shouting "don't shoot". At least that is surely how it will be portrayed in the made-for-TV movie.

Haven't read all the comments so this has probably been suggested but if the cops are ordered to stand down, why wouldn't an equal force of non-assholes be able to meet the antifags (oh oh! LGBT hatred!) and have at it? There must be a ton of people sick of these overindulged babies and ready to scrap.

Is there anyone who doubts that, had Coulter's Berkeley talk been, say, lifted entirely from speeches made by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama pre-2011, the talk would have been labeled as provocative, intolerable hate-speech, and the inevitable violence would have been justified on those grounds?

And that was only six years ago, and I hold many such "provocative" opinions, such as whether the PPACA is a good idea, and whether we should enforce immigration laws as they are now written, and whether the winner of the electoral vote should be considered president...and so much more that is beyond the pale now, but a short time ago was considered a mainstream opinion.

So, recalling to mind Martin Niemöller's famous quote ("First they came for..."), it is now the time when they are coming for us.

We probably should have fought a little harder for the wedding cake bakers and the pizza stores, but that is in the past.

Yes but that asshole administrative "judge" that fined the bakers lost his election last fall. I'm sure he was shocked but Portland, from what I have seen, is not all of Oregon. It and the university towns are where the crazies are but the rest of the state seems to be pretty conservative.

I agree, though I would phrase it as better "gun control".

On a positive note, I have been hugely amused watching ARM's accelerating slide right smack into using the classic wife-beater's excuse. If the righties would just stop making the antifas so angry the antifas wouldn't have to keep attacking them.

Michael K:

Good point. Lots of short-sighted actions in the last eight years that will have long-term consequences.

I suspect those who expect Obama and Hillary Clinton to lead and inspire the "resistance" will be disappointed. The former is busy giving $400K speeches to private groups. The latter is too tired, and her daughter, offered as a surrogate, is not that charismatic.

On the other hand, Warren and Sanders have shown some smidgeon of leadership in the matter.

Not that I am getting a Sanders/Warren 2020 sticker, but it is nice to see someone step up a bit.
