Did Gingrich win?

I'm hearing reports that he's the projected winner (in South Carolina), but it looks even with 1% reporting.

ADDED: The link above goes to CNN. Here's Wapo.

MORE SHOCKING NEWS: Heidi Klum and Seal are getting divorced!

AND: I know, I know. Exit polls. But remember exit polls in 2004? Here's what I wrote that strange November evening:
Yes, I care a lot about the outcome of the election, and I'm sitting here waiting for the news to come in, sampling the dribbled out exit polls, and fretting. But at the same time, I feel complete assurance that as soon as the outcome is known, I'll fully accept it. Either man will make a decent enough President. I think Bush deserves to continue in office, but if it is to be Kerry, Kerry can handle the job too.... It is equanimity that flows through me. Time for a nice glass of win, a plate of pasta with Bolognese sauce, and a calm absorption of reality.

UPDATE: "A nice glass of win" -- ah, so hope does live on! Time for a nice glass of wine and toast to hope! A glass to be refilled later, perhaps, in a quenching of sorrow!

ANOTHER UPDATE: 10:53 p.m. Maybe I am going to get that nice glass of win after all. I'm really surprised. I let those exit polls affect me. Then I called up my sister in Florida and ended up talking with her for a long time, just watching the numbers on the TV screen with the sound off, so I wasn't getting any punditizing and wasn't drawing conclusions about much of anything. I got off the phone, and it took a while for me to absorb it, but eventually I got the message that everything was trending toward Bush.

Gingirch "won" in the sense that people know he is a joke and would lose badly to Obama and might have slightly prolonged his defeat to the unlikable and uninspiring Romneybot by having some idiots in South Carolina vote for him.

Is that what you mean?

I dunno, hat guy, do you have any reason to believe that the precincts polled so aren't roughly representative of SC Republican primary voters? These very early counts are often surprisingly accurate, particularly in primaries where everyone voting is from one party.

Well, this will test Newt. It's precisely the sort of thing that gets his mouth running ahead of his sense. So if he doesn't blow himself up over this, perhaps he has a chance.

I doubt it, though. He will do something foolish...he always does and he won't have the media to cover for him, either.

LilEvie said...

They are relying heavily on exit polls - what could go wrong with that?

Yuck it up while you can Crack.

Andy said...

uh oh:

"So far, the Mormon issue hasn't been addressed. But an early exit poll found 57 percent saying it’s very important that a candidate share their religious beliefs - and 46% of those voters went for Newt. Romney got 22%. For non-Christianists, in contrast, Romney won by 43 to 29 percent. If you build a political party on sectarian foundations, as the current GOP has been, then you won't be able to have a Mormon nominee. This was always going to be an issue in the South - and it looks as if we now have proof."

It's too early to draw any firm conclusions about how big a problem Mitt's Mormonism is, but since evangelical Christians are some of the most close-minded bigoted people around, I suspect Mittens is in trouble with them.

edutcher said...

If it's at all close, it won't be much of a win for Newt.

Newt's not known for being especially gracious, but I hope in his speech he remembers to thank Juan Williams and John King.

Gingrich crushed Romney in the upstate areas of SC, and beat him by a little in the more moderate downstate areas.

The margin appears to be 10%. Last week, the "experts" had the race even, possibly Gingrich winning by two percent.

Looks like Newt got a John King bounce. And Mitt better have some answers about Bain and his tax returns pretty damn quick.

Andy, the fountainhead of bigotry is ignorance. You seem to know little or nothing about evangelical Christians other than your assumptions of bigotry via gay hatred. There are certainly some people who call themselves evangelical who spew garbage about homosexuality, but most respect the word of the Bible.

The bible includes this:

Judge not, that ye be not judged.

For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

I am not a Christian, Andy, but I know wisdom when I see it. I hope you will see some of the wisdom in this passage.

On the other hand, there were some classic Newt lines. The campaign was "very humbling and very sobering. . ." I laughed at the TV at that line. And then there was this one: "It's not that I am a good debater. It is that I articulate the deepest felt values of the American people." Imagine how Newt might have described himself if the campaign hadn't been "very humbling?"

Hell, we had a president get blown in the Oval Office by a woman who wasnt his wife, and he still left office as a very popular president. Lets not pretend that some news from Newt's ex-wife is going to be at the forefront of voters if Gingrich's name is on the ballot.

He's bitchy because he knows this primary is now going until Super Tuesday, at the very least. He was hoping a win tonight would lead him to winning in Florida and a concession from Newt. Now, with Newt winning handily in SC, even if Romney wins Florida, Newt wont drop out. Its extra time and money that Romney now has to spend that he didnt figure on spending.

Romney's message now has to change as well. Instead of just taking on Obama head-on, like he has been doing in this entire primary, he now has to challenge Newt, and that appears to be something he is uncomfortable in doing.

Don't piss on my leg and say it's raining claiming that Romney is a nice guy just because he comes across as warm and fuzzy milquetoast.

I've not heard a Romney supporter describe him as warm and fuzzy milquetoast. Not one. That's what his critics say. We say he is tough, highly competent, and willing to do what it takes to get the job done.

I'll get behind Newt, as I said, but let's face it. His attacks on Bain over the pain that layoffs cause families tell suggest he may not have the stomach to cut Washington the way it needs to be. I've not doubt Romney would make those tough decisions. He's already proven he can.

Andy's over the top, Gary. But look at the percentage of South Carolinians voting for Gingrich who said that religion was a primary factor in their decision, and then I think you might lose the presumptions.

Anyone denying the appeal of a non-Mormon opponent among evangelical voters is delusional.

Anyone stupid enough to refuse the possibility that Gingrich changed his religious affiliation for political reasons is also blind.

Andy's attitude is no reason to pretend that the Republicans, not just the supposed "elites" among them, aren't having some serious issues. Don't let his insignificant little episodes of shortsightedness fuel some major shortsightedness, in a different direction, of your own.

I can't. But Lee Atwater sure could.

Because they're not things that we pick up on, but sound out of place, we ask why someone would make those statements.

Again, Lee Atwater's (a South Carolinian) explanation provides the rest of us with a nice little guidebook for why Republicans sometimes say things in certain environments with meaning that seems symbolic, but unclear.

Like the Trent Lott comment about Strom Thurmond, for instance. But more subtly.

Ritmo, I didn't ask for Lee Atwater's opinion. Don't know it and don't care to. If you can't explain it without resorting to tiresome verbal calisthenics, you're probably reading more into it and could use some self-reflection rather than finger-pointing.

"Because they're not things that we pick up on, but sound out of place, we ask why someone would make those statements."

You should ask why they sound out of place. This is getting to the heart of the racism at the core of almost every liberal I know or encounter.

Since you're trying to distract by bringing up the silly Trent Lott castigation, allow me to do the same. Many liberals liked to refer to Bill Clinton as America's first Black President. This is somehow acceptable in liberal circles, yet it is fundamentally no different than any perceived racism in Gingrich's remark. In fact, it is an overtly condescending and racist statement and point of view to hold.

One must infer racism in Gingrich's remark, however the overt racial statements and philosophies of liberals in this country are not only rationalized, but self-congratualted in liberal circles.

Procounsel Napoleon had just declared himself Emperor and lost his place on Beethoven's title page when he finished the tribute in 1805.

It was played on the night they drove old Romney down.

The conductor's arms and baton were doing a crazy Gingrich like attack on the music until I thought he would put out his eye. But that's how the greatest symphony ever written gets played.

So I missed the fun. A brief read through of the comments sounds like Genghis Khan came through here and took the women and children.

Maybe Romney and ABC can run the ex-wife's story accompanying the "Uncoordinated but very obedient" PAC's Iowa half truths 24/7 on Florida TV starting tonight until the next vote.

It's the best of all worlds for us -- someone who can hijack the GOP nominating contest from their most electable general election possibility (Romney), and run a general election the same way Michelle Bachmann would...

The happiest people tonight are Newt's supporters. Second place is a toss-up between the Democrats and the Media.

Blacks would really vote for the GOP if they only knew better (not that it's condescending or anything to imply that blacks can't determine their own interests or anything). It's everyone else who has "brainwashed" them to think otherwise.
