I really hate that I have a Mac laptop after seeing that.

Is that a picture of the young Althouse?

I take it that the I-Pads are kept in the bathroom.

And how are your two new trees doing out at the roadside? Does Meade cover them with a sheet in bitter sub-20F weather? We do that with Palms planted around the pool.

Ann Althouse said...

@Christy It's just some junk mail.

Obama vs. the House GOP. Q&A starts at minute 22 or so.

Isn't it amazing how fast they are able to load up Obama's teleprompter?

I was gonna say I doubted young Althouse had a cell phone. Pretty junk mail though.

MM,

It was interesting to see BHO blow apart the stupid right wing talking points that many commenters here can't see through.

For example, it was funny when one of the Rs said that Rs do have solutions, e.g. they could cover everybody w/ health insurance and it wouldn't cost a cent. BHO, showed great restraint as he kindly pointed out that this and other R proposals were BS. BS is not how you effectively run a government.

We've seen how Rs do health care; the deficit busting drug prescription proved that.

Since Reagan we've seen how R tax cuts lower the national debt and shrink the government. [And, don't forget that at the same time Reagan dropped taxes for rich folks he increased the payroll taxes (which start from the first dollar of income, and completely go away for folks after about $100k) such that huge surplus revenue from payroll taxes could be used to cover holes created by the tax cuts for the rich, w/ iou's in return for the middle class folks. P.S. I've personally benefited from this w/ regard to my tax bill.]

So it shouldn't be a surprise that Rs don't care about policies that work, but it was funny to see the hollowness of their talking points in this context.

P.S.
Even Malkin was (relatively) supportive of BHO's participation. although many of her commenters (like many here) seemed stuck in the talking points rut.

MadisonMan is right, tradguy - mild winter. But even if the temperature drops below -15, the two new trees still have about 2' blankets of snow over their root zones. They both look good, thanks, so far, no ice damage to their branches, safely dormant, and I'm sure their root systems, right now in 50° soil, are expanding even as I type, getting ready for a big spring flush of growth.

Without scoring it, I just thought it was really interesting political theater. With substance.

I hope they do it again. Many on the left are hoping Obama has to go in front of the progressives and defend his left flank, too.

If you are annoyed/disturbed by Obama, though, you probably will still hate him. But I think you can't keep saying he's a teleprompter idiot when you see him talk off the cuff like that.

Well, I guess you can. But it will be more obvious that you're a partisan hack if you do.

She'd said her root system was uphappy with 0 degree early morning constitutionals.

I wonder if Obama is going to say anything about Venezuela's violence against student protesters.

Just make sure on any one of those many laptops you avoid looking at images of small breasted women if you want to stay in compliance with new rules from the Australian government.

@rh -- When my son lived in MO last winter they had their Alabama bred, TX and NC acclimated Jack Russell with them. On more than one occasion when they took him out in the snow (apropriately jacketed in camo) he flipped over in the snow with all four feet in the air and refused to move.

@Penny Bissage mmmm Maybe Mrs. Bissage started reading his comments?

I miss Victoria. I am concerned that she overdoses on Althouse. I hope she is well. Hope they are both well.

@XWL Unbelievable! And yes, that is what over-regulation and government here there and everywhere produces.

Smaller government OF and BY the people, not the political elites.

Oh yes -- lots of computers. I take it the Professor does not mind sharing her space. Now their space.

BTW -- If you don't have Apple stock, you might consider it. They had a very good quarter.

And it looks like you might be your own best customer.

Too many laptops... not enough dogs!! Seriously, I thought you guys would have a dog by now.

Our dog just turned 16! She is a border collie/retriever mix, best we can tell. She was about 1 yr. old when we got her from the Knox Co. pound in January of 1995. Her arthritis is bad, and she is nearly deaf, but she is otherwise pretty healthy.

How many computers does it take to write one blog?

Ann Althouse said...

We're not getting a dog. Maybe some day if we move to the country.

Why all the laptops? There's mine and there's Meade's. The other 2 are older ones of mine, and I had them out today because I was looking for something. Didn't find it either.

I feel encouraged by the thought of underground root systems "getting ready for a big spring flush of growth".

It may have been my own grey filter clouding my perceptions, but the mood I encountered while out shopping yesterday seemed like one of despondency.

I looked up *despondent* when I got home and was interested to note how strongly lack of hope figured in the definition.

My own desire for hope and change was derailed this year by lies and broken promises. I'm now counting on underground roots.

I hope your trees do well. I Planted one at the family plot last year. It died. Maybe I'll try again this year.

In the Dylan Connect Dept...

Reading about the upcoming LOST season 6 led to the following interview quote by Damon Lindelof, LOST executive producer:

"I would love to know what song Damon thinks would best match the mood of Season 6?

Wow. I'd say Visions of Johanna by Bob Dylan.

Why?

I have that song on my iPod, and when I hear it I think about the show. There are certain lyrical phrases in that song that are very well-suited to Lost."

I like hearing and seeing ways art and work connect. It's almost as encouraging as imagining underground root growth.
