Prepare to be assimilated. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. You will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.

Is its purpose to scare small children and pets into "freezing" for the camera (kind of like that red-eye-eliminating rapid-flashing option on some cameras)?

Sorry, doing too many things at once with two many people here ...

I MEANT "freezing" for conversations (as in, paying attention long enough to listen to grandma say "hi"). We could use that help.

(And btw, the rapid-flashing DOES work in the analogous context)

Okay, I'll enter this Rorschach Test. It looks like a military tank winking at someone. Maybe the inspiration is that robot who winks at Will Smith near the end of 'I, Robot.' Or, maybe it's like a signature line from an action movie (only this is a signature gesture): "Do you feel lucky, punk?" --wink, wink--

What does it say about you (and me) that this thing looks scary?

It's not scary. It's a friendly, happy phone. The battery panel seems to wink at us in a nonchalant...

OK, it's creepy.

LOL...that's what mine looks like too, but I've never "looked" at it that closely.
