"Me telling you to 'Go back where you came from. Did I say that? Is it on video?.... I called you a lazy b-i-t-c-h. That's the worst thing I said."

"This woman is playing the victim for political purposes because she is a state legislator. I'm a Democrat and will vote Democrat for the rest of my life, so call me whatever you want to believe. For her political purposes, make it black, white, brown, whatever. It is untrue."

I'm reading "State lawmaker, man she accused of verbally harassing her confront each other" (WSB-TV Atlanta).

I got there via Andy Ngo ("Media machine has been blowing up story of @itsericathomas, who claims a racist white man told her to 'go back where you came from.' Well, he returns during her presser to deny allegation. He says he’s a Democrat & she’s embellishing story for attention"). Erica Thomas is a member of the Georgia House of Representatives.

Here's the raw video:

"But if there were 2 empty lanes, why didn't he go to the empty one?"

That question is asked and answered in the video.

The answer is, he did. He bought his stuff, then asked some store employee what could be done about people going through the express line with more than 10 items. He was told the store's policy is to do absolutely nothing, and it's up to the other customers. The idea seems to be that social pressure is the only enforcement. So he then decides to go up to her and say something. At the end of the video, he expresses disturbance with people who selfishly violate social norms. He seems to have decided that he needs to say something, so he went over to her to apply the social pressure.

I too have seen that South Park, rhhardin. Most people have at least heard the speech, which is why Scott Adams' attempt to be cute is probably going to get him in trouble with his fellow Californians.

Still, this open black supremacy is interesting because it makes white people constantly more angry and frustrated with the notion that some talentless mooch can accuse them of racism, then BAM. Fired, ostracized, hounded by packs of psychotics demanding their death. People weren't yelling "Go back where you came from" at random black people at the start of the Obama Administration, they actually had hope that racial relations would openly improve. After Trayvon, and Ferguson, and countless other race skirmishes, the response of white America was to elect Donald Trump. As a signal, it's pretty intense. The step up from that is, "Damn right you should go back to Africa," even if their family has been here since the 18th century.

You do have to choose your battles. No, I wouldn't have chosen this one, especially when I wasn't held up. He got out of the store quickly by using one of the open cashiers. That he left the store, thought about it, and went back in to speak with her means he wanted to get something off his chest.

Confronting tall, overweight people when you're not the equal is size is something not recommending. At this situation shows why. This person has a HUGE chip on her shoulders; she reads racism into everything. She doesn't realize it yet, and may never will, that her behavior and accusations only cement in people's minds the stereotypes. Many times the stereotypes are very accurate.

Jarby said...

Confronting rude and inconsiderate strangers in public is rarely worth it. They almost always KNOW they are being rude and inconsiderate--they just don't care, so confronting them gives them an excuse to make themselves victims. They've been "attacked!" "Berated!" "Targeted" because they are (insert category here).

Other times, and I've seen this happen, a stranger may SEEM like they are being rude/inconsiderate, but they are actually in the midst of some emergency or unavoidable situation. Confronting such people only causes them embarrassment on top of whatever tragedy they are dealing with.

This lady is terrible. But I would've kept my mouth shut.

"Hispanic" just indicates some association with a country wherein they speak Spanish - like Spain. So it has nothing to do with race, although it's often misused to indicate race because the MSM and their ilk typically won't use the correct word for most people from Central and South America, namely "mestizo". A la "La Raza".

My two friends from Mexico are officially "Hispanic", although neither would ever use that stupid word, despite being genetically Jewish and German.

Do I get this right? The man is exonerated of racism if he just called the woman a "lazy bitch" as long as he didn't say "go back." Sigh.

I've always thought there is a huge misconception in some people's minds concerning the 10 items or less lanes at the supermarket. If you are buying $100 to $200 worth of groceries, there is nothing more annoying than being stuck behind several people who are just buying a few items. You're the better customer for the store, you get the favorable treatment, that's how a free market works. And you shouldn't have to suffer the ridiculous impatient fools behind you in line who think their few items entitles them to cut in front of you.

Now the store plays a little game of calling the 10 items or less lane the "express" lane, in order to entice the cheapskates to stand in the longer but ostensibly faster moving line and out of the way of their better customers. But shouldn't the better customers be able to choose any lane they want? The cheapskate shoppers see no problem to their doing that.

I've been in the 10 items or less lane many times. I know I'm free riding on the grocery story pricing. If I want convenience, I go to a convenience store and pay more.

Now I will admit that it is unfair to the other good customers to use the express lane when you have more than 10 items, as the good customers have a collective interest in promoting the idea that the express lane is faster for the cheapskate shoppers.

Today someone retweeted her saying how excited she was to meet Jessie Smollett a while back when he was coming to Atlanta (before his "attack" I'm pretty sure).

But yeah, this short Cuban-American Democrat (who has himself made numerous posts about how awful and racist President Trump is) definitely told her to "go back to where you came from" even though she is now backing down from making that exact claim.

Watching the video it's just impossible to believe she actually acted like a "b-word," so he must be crazy and/or racist! Solid entertainment.

Rude people never respond to counter rudeness, but they might just feel a little shame when gently confronted with polite information, for instance:

If the rude person responds rudely, raised eyebrows and a calm, "I understand; bless your heart" then making eye contact with the cashier is immensely satisfying.

MikeR said..."Media machine has been blowing up story..." Nah - she got real lucky.

Counterpoint: the original story (before the various walk-backs and him getting on the news segment) was the top Twitter Trending Moment (or whatever it's called, on the banner at the top) for most of a full day. So that's at least one small part of the Media working to promote the story.

Twitter has a grossly outsized influence on Media coverage not because a lot of normal/nice centrist people read Twitter but because most of the Media personalities who actually deliver the news (anchors, producers, reporters, etc) are themselves Twitter junkies. That has significant distortionary effects--you're soon going to see more smart Democrats start talking up the difference between the Twitter Left and the general US population and the need to appeal to the latter even if it pisses off the former. The "Squad" as an example is wildly popular on Twitter but their ideas, such as they are, poll very poorly nationwide...but look at the coverage!

Lots of little dogs manly yapping in this thread. This guy just let his inner Becky loose and he ran across more than he bargained for.

It’s too bad it escalated the way it did, I’m sure her children learned a valuable lesson about effete little white men.

Birches said...

Effete, really?

wwww said...

"Wwww he didn't cuss at her until she yelled at him. He said he was very polite at first."

Well that puts a different spin on it, and maybe that's how it went down. I can't see him as a reliable narrator regarding his adult maturity if he swore at someone in front of her kids. And if it's during the day at the grocery store there's lots of kids around. Swearing is not something a mentally hinged person would do. But obviously she should not have yelled and it's particularly bad because her kids were around.

If she yelled, a mature adult would withdraw from the situation. Not escalate. It's a public grocery store for goodness sake. Something's off.

I’m sure her children learned a valuable lesson about effete little lifelong democrat white men.

For some reason you keep leaving that key part out.

I wonder why that is?

Not to worry, you aren't the worst of the left/dems/LLR's lying about this incident today. The Guardian actually labeled the insane dem woman a "republican".

By "accident", no doubt.

Go ahead Inga. Just say it: It was a little hispanic "chihuahua" lifelong democrat man that did this.

Every. Single. Dem/lefty/LLR.

But ONLY every single one of them, 24/7/365.

In every instance.

Unless a dem is involved, then all of a sudden party affiliation either doesn't matter at all OR the dem is "accidently" labeled a republican.

In this case, we will also soon see the "white hispanic" label resurrected.

Ah yes.

The inevitable deflection.

This always occurs when Inga cannot address the salient points.

Similar to yesterday when she demostrated herself completely incapable of actually listing the policy differences between Warren/Bernie and those on the dem side who are a "bit more radical" (LOL, yes, Inga actually wrote that about full blown marxist commies: "a bit more radical")

You know, just a tad. Just a smidge. Just an iota.

The correct grammar is "ten items or fewer" not "not ten items or less."

That's the real crime here.

Char Char Binks, Esq. said...

Who would call a woman a "son of a bitch" when you can simply go straight to "bitch"?

wwww said...

Seriously why is the thread going off the rails about this?

It's obvious that:

(1) Mature adults should not swear in front of kids in grocery stores. (2) Mature adults should not swear on threads in blogs.

It's worse to swear in front of strange kids in grocery stores, but both things are weird. If any of us were in public and saw someone swearing at someone else, we would wonder if the person was mentally off. It's not acceptable or behaviour typical of mature adults.

Below is from NPR. That settles it! Holy writ.

"An admittedly unscientific question we posed online indicates that the "or less" crowd outnumbers the "or fewer" folks. Of the 8,390 people who responded:

-- 59.4 percent agreed that a sign saying "10 items or less" is something "only the fussiest of fussbudgets would worry about."

-- 40.6 percent felt that such a sign is a "grammatical error that shouldn't be tolerated and makes you want to shop elsewhere." (We suspect they realized our line about wanting to shop elsewhere was an exaggeration.)

Should the majority rule?

William Safire, the "On Language" columnist for The New York Times, came down firmly against signs that say "or less." In 1988, he cheered when Safeway Stores joined the "or fewer" side.

"The most power-intensive moment in the history of this column came when Safeway Stores was criticized here for 'Express Lane — Ten Items or Less' and promptly rectified the mistake," Safire wrote.

It's hard to argue against the legendary Safire (who died in 2009)."

Scenario reminds me of:

"Janet Mcdonald

I was going to the movies with a friend of mine from Yale who is black also. And there was a long line. And we were like, let's jump the line. These white people, they're going to be scared of us. We'll just go and jump the line. We'll get to the front of the line. So, of course, you know, we walked up to the front of the line, like, yeah, you want to try me? I'm black. That usually works in New York.

These people were ready to rip our hair out. And they were white. I couldn't believe it. And they were like, in French, what are you doing? The line starts back there. You can't just walk to the front of the line. They were, like, ready to kick our butts. I was shocked. I'm like, these are white people, and they're not scared of us?

That's when I realized I wasn't in Kansas anymore. And I liked it. I mean, of course, it was kind of humiliating, because you know, we're supposed to be the intimidating, scary ones. And then all these French bitches in high heels were threatening us. And they were in our faces. And it made me realize that the whole black-white game just doesn't work outside of the United States.

Because white people aren't afraid of you here. And at the same time, they don't hate you, because that sort of goes together. So I'll take it. I'll wait on line. Now I don't dare jump lines. So that opened my eyes."

He's a Democrat.

A real Democrat would know to let the oppressed black lady in the express line even if she were pushing three carts.

You can watch them at Whole Foods suddenly "forget" something, then remember they really don't need it, as a pretext to step out of line and let a person of color take their spot.

It's a subtle dance, but you can't just tell the black person "sorry for slavery" and start pushing their stuff past yours on the conveyor belt.

That's how produce and egos get bruised.
