"Scott Adams apologizes for believing @CNN about the Covington Catholic Boys fake news."

Oh, well, this is interesting...

... because I realize that my idea of what happened — which you're jumping on me about in the comments to the previous post — was influenced by listening to what Scott Adams said about it yesterday...

So do I need to apologize for believing Scott Adams? Not exactly. My post — "The man in the middle" — is carefully written based only what I know, which is what I'm always doing around here. I wasn't a tube channeling what went through Scott Adams from CNN. I protect myself from that sort of thing. But the way in which I wrote around my lack of knowledge was influenced by what Scott Adams said yesterday, and he's apparently backing off from all that.

I can't watch the first video yet, because it's a live-stream until he gets done and I entered after the relevant part.

By the way, one thing that I'm actively trying to avoid and that I'm wary of in other white people is a patronizing, sentimental attitude toward Native Americans.

UPDATE: The live stream is over now, so I'm watching the new video. First, Adams observes that on the very day when MSM were observing their own screw-up over the BuzzFeed fake news about the Mueller investigation, they were falling into another fake news story. Next, Adams admits, "I totally got taken by it," and begins what he calls "an extended explanation/apology."

He says he's now seen "extended video" and declares everything CNN reported to be "absolutely fake news." And it was the "worst kind" of fake news, because "They didn't even get the good guys and the bad guys right."

Adams believed, based on the CNN reports, that the "Native American man was awesome," because he came between 2 groups of antagonistic youths and "de-escalated" a conflict, and he called them "assholes." Scott refrains from repeating the a-word in the new video, substituting the word "jerks." Now, he says, based on longer video, "That is completely not what happened."

The most important thing that CNN did not report, Adams says, is that the African American group — the Black Israelites — were being "flat-out racist." On the extended video, you can hear them calling the Catholic schoolboys "crackers" and (repeatedly) "school shooters."

The Black Israelites denounced Democrats as "racist." "You didn't see that on CNN," Adams laughs. The black protesters were, Adams says, "overtly anti-white." "They were also anti-gay" and "used anti-gay slurs," and the Catholic schoolboys "spontaneously and unanimously pushed back against an anti-gay statement" — "They were offended." The Catholic schoolboys were smiling, "didn't look angry," and "were all well-behaved," Adams says.

CNN presented the elderly Native American man as coming between the 2 groups of youths, but, Adams says now, that "definitely didn't happen" — "He was just kind of doing his own thing... He was causing trouble. He was not looking to stop it. He was very obviously looking to cause trouble... He looked like he was escalating the situation, not de-escalating." [ADDED: I have now watched that part of the video, and I have nothing to say about what that man had going on in his head.]

Adams now interpret the boys as seeing the old man as "all part of the fun." "They were just sort of dancing around because he was dancing around." Adams stresses that the old man approached the boys — got "in their faces." The Catholic schoolboys "did not back up," which is what created the viral video image from which the fake news was manufactured.

Adams notes that CNN still has the story in fake form on its front page "Teens in Make America Great Again hats taunted Native American elder" and I'm seeing that now, at 11:30 ET:

According to Adams, in the extended video, you see a large group and only about 10% of them have MAGA hats, and, more importantly, they do not taunt the man. I guess CNN isn't afraid of libel suits.

Maybe Adams is worried about libel suits. He says, "I'm going to do a full 180 on you.... This is the most complete apology you're ever going to see from anybody. I couldn't have been more wrong about this group of kids. These kids kept their composure, stayed on the right side of every issue, avoided trouble, and never lost their smiles." But he still thinks "It was a mistake to wear their MAGA hats in public, because you know that's going to cause trouble and it probably did."

AND: Let me quote EDH (from the comments in the previous post):
Most of the kids seemed to be chanting with the drum beat, albeit in an irreverent way, but more jocular than threatening.

That's why I'd like to see what's on either end of that edited video clip, especially the genesis and termination of the encounter.

And who was the president that said "I want you to argue with them. Get in their face"?
I'll embed the 1 hour and 45 minute video, which I clicked on and watched less than a second of before clicking off:

I may watch it eventually.

OKAY: I've watched the key part of the video, and I think this is a whole lot of nothing. The men making the video remind me of religious ranters I've seen in Madison many times. Ordinary people just ignore them, and that's what I'm seeing in the video. The Catholic schoolboys group is large, and they seem to be taking in the free speech forum and doing some sort of cheers on their own, widely separated from "Black Israelites" group. Then the Native American guy enters the space and walks up to the schoolboys beating his drum. The schoolboys react by bouncing along with the beat in a way that seems to welcome the man and include him in their boisterous fun day out in the public square. Shame on the adult professionals who latched onto this as something to make into the big issue of the day. Total fake news. I ignored this yesterday, but my ignoring something doesn't have any effect on the total amount of noise. So I have to speak up and rephrase my silence into words: This is nothing.

AND: The man holding the camera narrates, accusing the schoolboys of "mockery" and so forth. But you're a fool if you watch the video and see what he's telling you to see. It's a microcosm of fake news, and big media responded and amplified.

There's such a thing as false light defamation and this looks like it to me. I try to initially withhold judgment on stories like this because so often they turn out to be fake news. I think this example is especially contemptible because these accused boys are barely even teens. They are one step out of childhood. No wonder they didn't understand the situation.

And of course, Trumpit has to show up and spread his absurdities. Can only be a matter of time before PPPT chimes in. Just for the record, the Catholic boys did nothing wrong, the propaganda machines have done their due diligence and promoted the false narrative. r/V: Yes it seems Nathan Phillips and other Native Americans took their planned drum /song performance and stepped between the antagonistic Black fundamental bible preachers and the teens to calm things down, but as Phillips said in an interview he felt block and intimidated by the youth.

Yeah, that seems to be the latest prog revision making the rounds after it became apparent that their first effort at vicious slander might not have been completely successful.

And it is interesting to note that Covington Catholic Diocese stated, "We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students. All said it is not a nothing story, but another example of the incivility of our times.

"sorry, but your comments that a teacher needed to tell the students to "come here and calm down" and "rowdy behavior" DO suggest that you think they exhibited bad behavior."

I'd call it uninformed or ignorant or teenage behaviour that should have been guided by a adult. It's not unusual for a group of teenagers to act immaturely. That's why adult supervision is important. This was not a sports arena. It was the Lincoln Memorial. You don't get that close to protesters. You avoid conflict in strange cities. Your chaperones help minors avoid conflict and dangerous situations.

And, yes, I do believe they were too rowdy at the Lincoln Memorial but that's a very minor issue. A good chaperone would have calmed them down and prevented them from interacting with crazy-seeming protesters. There are people yelling on street corners in WA DC and yeah adults have a responsibility to prevent minors from interacting with them.

The adults failed to protect these children. It's obvious they failed. Video has gone viral that is hurting these children. Just 1 parent who had said, "hey let's back up here. Let's give some room. Let's walk over here as a group away from the protesters." That chaperone would have changed the entire dynamic and prevented that video. I do not think adults were present. These kids were on their own in a confusing environment.

Beyond everything else, the lack of supervision by adults failed the students because WA DC is not a safe city. These kids were from out of town & not familiar with the dangers of the city.

This is part and parcel with not letting kids walk to school, not letting kids play at a park near their home, etc. It produces immaturity.

I think some of these commenters are too hard on Althouse and Rod Dreher and Scott Adams. I'm pro-life, I've been in that March many times, I knew that I had never seen the kind of behavior that was being alleged. Yet I thought it might have happened. I interpreted the first video as the voiceover and the captions wanted me to. And I was horrified. Yes, I did look around for an explanation, yes I did find the longer video and the first early explanations before I said anything. So the first thing I said: "Another day, another lefty lie." But relatives and people I know were in that March that day, they go to Catholic schools, they wear MAGA hats. I had every reason to look for an explanation before I spoke. At the time I thought Althouse was being pretty reasonable because she wasn't leaping in with anti-Catholic comments or being visibly gleeful at a chance to bash prolifers.

It's just no use demanding that Althouse be a partisan hack; it won't happen for either side. "Althouse is being insufficiently partisan to satisfy the more ardent spirits on both sides who read her" is always going to be an available topic. Maybe it should be a new keyword? "Insufficiently partisan".

That said, yes, this seems like battle space preparation for Amy Coney Barrett (RBG is not coming back!! or not for long). And it seems to me, the lies are getting bigger and bolder but as they get bigger they get more flimsy.

It was eye-opening for many commenters here, and we said so at the time. That cannot be undone.

But it does help to put the current episode in perspective. Trump is a phenomenon. He is the sort of unusual person that breaks larger processes, force-starts new ones, and whose hand writes what thereafter cannot be erased. Its the "great man" view of history, with the caveat that "great men" are rare. Things go as they do due to larger processes, and then a "great man" comes along and, for a while, things get strange.

The thing about "great men" though is that they usually come to a bad end. They are often reactionary to a great process. They are often a very temporary respite, a speed bump. They are Stilicho and Aetius, Skanderbeg and John Hunyadi.

Hillary is irrelevant. We are observing larger processes, any individual involved (save for the exceptional, the "great man", of which at the moment in the US, there is only Trump), is just another particle in the flow. If not the Clintons it would have been some other. The Clintons are not unique.

Its (almost) always a mistake to obsess about individuals. It is a failure of perspective.

I never worry if I believe Althouse has interpreted a story incorrectly because she has established a long and consistent track record of absorbing new facts, reevaluating her earlier takes and then correcting the record regardless of whose ox gets gored.

In a very real sesnse, and you dont have to agree with every opinion she has, when it comes to factual matters Althouse is easily in the top tier of reputable news and analysis sources.

I agree she is better than most news sources and is far less partisan than most of the line up at CNN.

This is not a particularly high or noteworthy bar.

However I continue to question and resent these one sided choices. She lost her reputation with me over the Kavanaugh hearing. When we don't know who is telling the truth, we have well established principles for dealing with such a legal issue. She TAUGHT this! And she refused to apply them with her laughable 'cruel neutrality'.

Which makes her a soft partisan, not a hard one. But still a partisan. If RBG kicks it, look for ZERO neutral analysis on the positives of the candidate and see broad benefit of the doubt offered to the critics and character assassins. She did it against Kavanaugh because 'abortion'.

Why would she stop now?

It is valuable to the liberal consensus to make an example of these boys.
The campaign to hound them, interfere with their futures, is what we have seen expanding and extending greatly. Its gone from the top ranks to the middle, and down to technical workers, to college kids, and now schoolboys. Expect a lot more.

If they can be made to suffer it would be especially valuable to the liberal consensus if they are "innocent". If they can freely persecute the innocent, they can induce people to pre-emptively shut up and cower.

wwww makes this argument well, probably inadvertently. Pre-emptive surrender of public spaces out of fear. Cowering.

Ever? Even knowing that the kids are innocent, they are still the only ones being doxxed and being blacklisted from schools. What possible set of circumstances sees the perpetrators of this massive lie getting that kind of treatment? In my 50 years I've yet to see it happenm. Ever.

Two things worth adding here:
1. The Black Hebrews or Black Israelites are far weirder than some here seem to realize. They're not Fundamentalist preachers, they're a group of black Americans who claim that they are the only real Jews and that all the other 'Jews' in Israel and the rest of the world are knowing frauds who are trying to steal their identity. In other words, beyond even Farrakhan in assholistic lunacy.
2. Those suggesting that the school group should have walked away to avoid confrontation should remember that there were hundreds of thousands of people in D.C. that day and hundreds of chartered buses picking them up at the end of the day. (You don't take a yellow schoolbus from Kentucky to D.C.: the seats are way too hard and they don't have toilets.) The boys were waiting to get on one bus out of hundreds in town, so they had to be at that particular place at that particular time if they didn't want to be left behind.

The nasty professors at Duke who condescendingly rebuked the innocent young men, for racist or other leftist hive-think reasons, without knowing the facts - well let us just say that nobody really thinks that they have lived lives of honor, and I doubt they respect themselves all that much.

There may have been a settlement, I am not sure if there was.

In the present case, Rich Lowry, Rod Dreher, Scott Adams, Nick Frankovich (not on his own, but through his boss), and Professor George of Princeton have all issued embarrassing apologies. The poor old man with the drum, if he is not senile, cannot be proud of his thoughtless and unkind behavior. How would he like if if the tables were turned? He wouldn't, the poor little old man, nobody would.

Also, several twitter blue check personalities who have intentionally and specifically called for violence against the slandered children have either deleted their accounts or deleted their potentially criminal calls for violence, and some of them are afraid they will probably have to spend money on criminal defense lawyers, because realistic attempts to solicit violent criminal acts are, quite often, substantive crimes (I don't think any blue-check twitter user will be prosecuted, but I also think that people who call for violence against children should at least worry about having to hire a criminal defense lawyer), so there's that.

Since they dominate the media the left manufactures these opportunities whether it's Duke / UVA false rape accusations or Nancy Pelosi pushing through a Tea Party protest trying to provoke a response and then lying about getting one when her provocation didn't work. And, on top of it all, he seems very unhealthy.

By the way I have lived in the DC area for decades and decades and in the days before omnipresent videocameras I used to regularly tell people like that, to their face, that their conduct brought dishonor on them. Sometimes they were surprised that someone would have the courage and love for a stranger to call them out on their lack of love, typically they just gave me a nasty suspicious look. Poor creatures! One cannot imagine their mothers being happy at what they have become, and one cannot help hoping they will one day become genuine people, with normal hearts of normal sinners, rather than the agents of targeted hatred that they have allowed themselves to become! Whatever injustice they have seen, no matter how much they want to hurt others with their words and actions, one hopes that they will become, if only for a day, decent people without prejudice and hatred in their heart, while they are still living on this earth!

Birches rightly felt outrage, and said what he had to say: he did not laugh, and I respect him for that.

I respect you too because I know what it is like to he an intense person, with an intense view on subjects about which most people are not intense.

God loves us all, Inga Allie Oop, and ponder this:

Have you ever tried to make God laugh?
If not, why not?

I have, by the way.

Go ahead and laugh at that, if you want.
God loves you just as much as he loves anyone else, and he rejoices in good-hearted laughter.

Trust me, my poor young friend.

Leftists laugh when their liar machine spreads more lies. It's for the common good.

Inga, just laugh with a good heart, just once, with love for all:

The angels themselves will rush to hear that beautiful sound, and will grant any good-hearted prayer of invocation you choose to invoke for anyone for whom you feel good-hearted affection

Inga's rapey grandsons are gonna care when they're accused.

Inga sure won't.

The Catholic kids just learned a hard lesson in Fake News.

Fake News, by the way, converts more democrats into republicans than anything else by a wide margin.

@Rabel — amazing. Was that a tweet from Pulitzer awarded Kurt Eichenwald? Such an evil expression.
