TV on! Election night! Liveblog!

1. It begins:

2. "... Rand Paul projected by CNN to win his Senate race in Kentucky and another conservative, Dan Coats, projected to win the Senate race in Indiana."

3. "I'm more comfortable with Fox," say I, after watching CNN for a while and then switching.

4. Oh, CNN is better. Better graphics. Lots of people saying things. Annoying much of the time, but more detail. Mary Matalin enthusing about Portman winning in Ohio, a state Obama won.

5. DeMint already making his victory speech. Kitty Dukakis in trouble for seeming like "a walking billboard."

6. CNN says Coons wins. We won't have Christine O'Donnell to kick around anymore.

7. Rubio! David Gergen enthuses about "a Republican Latino with star power."

8. "Wow, the first time one of the fictional Althouse characters actually had a complete story arc! Bravo!" (Scroll up.)

9. It's so sad for the Democrats. They gave us so many things. Gifts. Expensive gifts. That we didn't want. That they bought with our money.

10. Tim Kaine blabs on and on, making a happy face. Eventually, Wolf Blitzer cuts hims off with "It's going to be a long night for you.

11. CNN's music for tonight is the same (or just close) to what was used in the HBO John Adams series. It's about the Framers, no? As the Tea Party clinches it.

12. Drudge says: "REPUBLICANS WIN SENATE SEATS: AL, FL, GA, IN, OH, KY, MO, NH, SC... DEMS WIN: CT, DE, MD... TOO CLOSE TO CALL: PA, IL..." Hey, what happened to California? Earlier he was calling it for Boxer.

13. Manchin. "Huge win" for the Democrats, says Wolf Blitzer, about the hot West Virginia race.

14. The GOP takes the House. It's outside of the margin of error, says NBC. Pelosi is gone. Ding dong. [UPDATE: Now MSNBC is calling that "a mistake." MSNBC is awful.]

15. NBC says Wisconsin is "too close to call," as the polls close.

16. Rand Paul victory speech: "I have a message! A message from the people of Kentucky! A message that is loud and clear and does not mince words! We've come to take our government back!"

17. MSNBC is hilarious. They're near meltdown. Rand Paul will destroy America. The Republicans "salivate at the thought" of worldwide economic collapse.

18. O'Donnell conceding. Very cheerful. Chirpy. I listened to Marco Rubio's victory speech a few minutes ago, which was, by contrast, very mellow.

19. Scott Walker has, it seems, won the Governorship here in Wisconsin. That's supposed to mean — that must mean — no to the high-speed train boondoggle.  Also in Wisconsin, Russ Feingold is way behind.

20. Feingold has lost, quite decisively. I'm sorry to see him go. He's a good man. But I should admit that I voted against him. I had to vote for the Party of No.

21. Geraldine Ferraro and Sarah Palin appear side-by-side on Fox News, analyzing the elections, denouncing sexism, and then ending on this adorable, ultra-girlie note:

22. Screen shot:

23. I just thought that was amusing, the way YouTube inserted my face into the Fox News. By the way, did you notice, at the end of the clip, when Geraldine said she wanted to go on "Dancing with the Stars," Sarah said "I'll hook you up"?

24. John Boehner tears up talking about American values, which he's chased all his life. Then, talking about his business, he sobs. Keep it together, Boehnsy!

25. That got a little... weird. I hope Boehnsy is ready to lead. Anyway, here in Dane County, Feingold's campaign manager George Aldrich is not giving up: "Russ is down by 80,000 votes, but...up to 1.4 million votes haven’t been counted." None of the Madison votes were in when he said that: "We are confident that this race is going to tighten, it is going to tighten quickly, and we may be in for a long night here."

25. Over at Drudge, it's the 3 Rs:

Rubio, Rand, and Ron.

26. Charles Krauthammer on Fox News: "The Obama agenda is dead." The Democrats have retained the Senate, apparently, but, looking forward to 2012, they will, self-defensively, distance themselves from Obama — says the Kraut.

27. Feingold has conceded. NYT:
Quoting Bob Dylan, he said, "My heart is not weary, it's light and free, and I've got nothing but affection for those who have sailed with me."

It is not clear what he will do next, but Mr. Feingold, 57, told the crowd: "It's on to the next fight, it's on to the next battle, it's on to 2012 and it is on to our next adventure, forward." He raised his fist in the air and left the stage.
The Times misses that "Forward" is the state motto. And maybe that "fist in the air" was posing as the Wisconsin "Forward" statue.

28. Karl Rove exclaims that he's "exhausted." I was just saying he looked tired.

29. Speaking of tired, it's interesting that Harry Reid will be sticking around. There's something so dreary about him. Does his victory cheer Democrats? Or would they have had more fun kicking Sharron Angle around?

30. I'm tired too. See you in the morning.

Not getting 50 in the Senate = FAIL for the GOP.

Good fucking job, Carly! You had the easiest opponent in the world and you fucked it up just like you fucked up H.P. when you ran it.

If Angle loses in NV = EPIC FAIL.

Pasta, I treat people how they treat me or how they treat others. Some people treat others nicely and I play nicely with them. All of us get rhetorical license to play games, but when Machos takes it to extremes and puts others down he knows what he's got coming to him.

Yeah, if a political movement that has existed for 18 months can't capture both houses of the U.S. Government in their first off-year election, it's a bust.

I'd like to see any other movement accomplish one/tenth what we just pulled off. God knows the Greens and Libertarians have been trying forever.

Pastafarian said...

Wow, Dead Julius, you had a pretty high standard of success for the GOP: They would have had to run the table in the 10 competitive races -- ten for ten.

Half of those were toss-ups, and half were unlikely gains. Even if they'd all been tossups, the odds of winning all would be one in a thousand.

Ritmo Re-Animated said...

And I also don't think it's out of bounds to call someone out for thinking that they're better than others because of who butters their bread.

As everybody noted, Julius is giving us the big spin for the Demos.

Oh Jesus -- John Boehner is crying on television, explaining how hard it's been to get to where he is now.

Ugh. How did we end up with this guy as our new presumed speaker of the house?

Ritmo Re-Animated said...

John Boehner just faked some huge crocodile tears while trying to pretend that he can relate to anyone in unfortunate circumstances.

I wonder who coached him to do that? Whose special interest hinged on that melodrama?

On Prop 19

Keep in mind that DUI attorneys consistently argue that marijuana consumption does not necessarily impair driving. So now, if the employer can’t prove that it does, he may not even be allowed to prevent his employees from driving — at least, not without risking a lawsuit.

This is crazy — and it’s anything but libertarian.

If you want to empower the civil attorneys out there with a new weapon they can use to terrorize employers with, then by all means, vote yes. But if you’re sick of creating new protected classes — if you don’t think employees should be encouraged to toke on the job, to give them a new right to sue if disciplined or canned for bad or lazy work — then vote No on 19.

Good to see one of my least favorite Democrats, Alan Grayson, bite the dust. I would have liked to have seen Barney Frank pay a price for his leading role in the mortgage meltdown, but that would probably have been too much to expect.

I wonder what will happen to Christine O'Donnell? Possibly a slot on Fox News. I find her very fetching, I have to admit.

Charlie Rangel won reelection, of course. Have any black congressional representatives in safe districts ever lost an election due to their political corruption? Not that I know of. Their constituents seem to rally to them all the more.

Tomorrow we'll see what Dear Leader chooses to make of this. A few weeks ago, addressing a black audience, he told them to get out and vote. "Don't make me look bad," he said. It's all about him and his narcissism. Guess what, Obama? You look bad.

27. Feingold has conceded. NYT:
Quoting Bob Dylan, he said, "My heart is not weary, it's light and free, and I've got nothing but affection for those who have sailed with me."

That song, Mississippi was released by Dylan on exactly September 11, 2001.

Mississippi
Every step of the way we walk the line
Your days are numbered, so are mine
Time is pilin’ up, we struggle and we scrape
We’re all boxed in, nowhere to escape
City’s just a jungle; more games to play
Trapped in the heart of it, tryin' to get away
I was raised in the country, I been workin’ in the town
I been in trouble ever since I set my suitcase down
Got nothin' for you, I had nothin' before
Don’t even have anything for myself anymore
Sky full of fire, pain pourin’ down
Nothing you can sell me, I’ll see you around
All my powers of expression and thoughts so sublime
Could never do you justice in reason or rhyme
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long
Well, the devil’s in the alley, mule’s in the stall
Say anything you wanna, I have heard it all
I was thinkin’ 'bout the things that Rosie said
I was dreaming I was sleepin' in Rosie’s bed
Walkin' through the leaves, falling from the trees
Feelin' like a stranger nobody sees
So many things that we never will undo
I know you’re sorry, I’m sorry too
Some people will offer you their hand and some won’t
Last night I knew you, tonight I don’t
I need somethin’ strong to distract my mind
I’m gonna look at you ’til my eyes go blind
Well I got here followin' the southern star
I crossed that river just to be where you are
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long
Well my ship’s been split to splinters and it’s sinkin' fast
I’m drownin’ in the poison, got no future, got no past
But my heart is not weary, it’s light and it’s free
I’ve got nothin’ but affection for all those who’ve sailed with me
Everybody movin’ if they ain’t already there
Everybody got to move somewhere
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow
Things should start to get interestin' right about now
My clothes are wet, tight on my skin
Not as tight as the corner that I painted myself in
I know that fortune is waitin’ to be kind
So give me your hand and say you’ll be mine
Well, the emptiness is endless, cold as the clay
You can always come back, but you can’t come back all the way
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

...but it's more like a little teeny-weeny paper cut with regard to the Senate.

With 60, it took iron party discipline to pass their most controversial bills.

With 51, or even 54, they'll never pull that off. They'll have to either work across the aisle, or get nothing done.

And then whatever they pass has to be agreeable to a House controlled by the other party and to a President who stands firmly for the positions that cost them their 60 votes. So again, they'll have to learn to negotiate, not dictate.

That's more than a paper cut. That's a shift in power. Not a switch, but a shift.

The real question is who can beat Obama in 2012.

The answer is not "anyone." He will have a strong position as an incumbent.

Did any Republican improve their position for the nomination tonight?

Perhaps Rep. Ryan of Wisconsin, who will now have a more prominent and visible position.

Not Palin, whose Mamma Grizzlies had a very spotty record, and who will look less relevant now that the election is over.

So, a bit of a plus for Ryan.

A bit of a minus for Palin.

Neutral for everyone else.

Watch Rubio and Martinez (of New Mexico,)

The Republicans have to do better among hispanics. These two will plan a role.

No more rich female former CEO's. That did not seem to work, eh.

This election means two things for California:

1. It is now more likely to end up needing a federal bailout, and

2. It is less likely to find Congress receptive to that idea.

Looking at the Governor races (because I'm waiting on a compile, so I'm bored), I see some surprises.

1. Connecticut has Republican Tom Foley in the lead.

2. Florida is within 60,000, too close to call.

3. Illinois is within 8,000, WAY too close to call.

4. Maine is within 4,000, even closer.

5. Minnesota is within 25,000. (Looking at the numbers, that seems to me to be large enough to call for Democrat Mark Dayton, but CBS hasn't yet.)

6. Oregon is within 15,000.

7. Vermont is within 4,000.

That's 7 close races, with the GOP in the lead on a couple of them. This could end up with 30 GOP governors, each with at least one eye on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Funny that despite all the political shifts tonite, the most important and significant near-term decisions are going to be made by Ben Bernanke & Team... and nobody is voting for them, nor voting on whether America ought to proceed full-force with debasing its currency.

After looking at tonite's results, Bernanke probably ordered the printing presses to start running 24/7, and for the helicopters to get all gassed-up and ready to go. Gotta get that cash out there before the Republican Congresspeople take their seats and realize that they have the power to ask him tough questions.

If Obama can no longer get the votes for stimulus, he will have to rely on Bernanke to proceed with STEALTH STIMULUS. It don't need no votes and it don't appear on the main government balance sheet.

Don't be too sure. Before, to balance the budget you needed a 2/3 majority to raise taxes and a 2/3 majority to cut spending. So neither ever happened.

Now you need a 2/3 majority to raise taxes and a 50% majority to cut spending. I can see getting 50% to sign on to spending reductions.

You know, I don't watch much TV anymore. I can't remember the last time I had Fox News on and I guess it has been some years since I've watched MSNBC. So I'm behind on how wacky that has become.

Last night I tuned in and checked the cable newsies and was reminded why I don't watch. Too much babbling and too little reporting. Anyway, this morning I see this clip from HotAir.

Note the open laughter by the MSNBC panel during the interview.

I don't know amything about Bachman, except libs hate her. I had no idea what Matthews was talking about when he tells her repeatedly what her agenda is (Matthews: "Your agenda, which is to investigate everyone for everything.")

So I tried to find out what he's talking about and according to Wikipedia here's the quote (10-17-08):

Matthews: "How many Congresspeople, members of Congress fit into that Anti-American crowd you describe?"

Bachmann: "You'd have to ask them Chris, I'm focusing on Barack Obama and the people he's associated with".

Matthews: "But he's a Senator from the State of Illinois, he's one of the members of Congress you suspect of being anti-American. How many people in the Congress of the United States do you think are anti-American. You've already suspected Barack Obama, is he alone or are there others?"

Bachmann: "What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look...I wish they would...I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out are they pro-America, or anti-America. I think people would love to see an expose like that."

So from that exchange Matthews has gone to 'Bachman wants to investigate everyone for everything.' That clip is really childish and lame.

Fox News is like this too? They have panelists giggling in the background when libs are interviewed? Somehow I doubt it.

/shrug

Add in smugness and self righteousness and the occasional "we won, deal with it" and you have last night. The people were begging, literally begging, the politicians to listen to them about health care and cap and trade and the stimulus and they were told to shut the fuck up. All three of those things are part of "the economy, stupid."

And across O’Donnell’s face there came a look of complete and utter realization — that the man to whom he was speaking lives not on this earth but rather in Cloud Cuckoo Land.

Heh-heh-heh. ;)

"Now all we have to do is not fuck it up this time. Yeah I'm talking to you Boehner."

Hahahahahahahaha!

How can they not?

We've been living in a Republican landscape for 30 years...the ruins of America we see around us is the manifestation of Republican ideaology and practice.

Onward and downward with more of the same...but worse!

MM, is that what they said, R to D, cuz it's the other way around. Regardless, full-on one party in all three branches is never a good idea.

"It was the economy, but that alone would not have made the difference. The difference was that in the teeth of the horrible economy a number of very expensive, enormously expensive wars were foisted on a people who know a lot more about budgets, real budgets, than does Congress.

I clarified your statement for you.

Think I might actually voluntarily sneak a quick peek at The View this A.M., just this once.

The sight of Baba Yaga Behar grinding and gnashing her iron teeth in seething, impotent fury should absolutely qualify as "Must-See TV."

There...fixed it for you. I find it more descriptive than either Democrat or Republican.
