"Trump’s team again defined classical broadly as all premodernist architectural styles, with roots in Greco-Roman antiquity..."

"... though art deco, which is on the list, is not typically considered traditional. The order defines 'traditional architecture' as Gothic, Pueblo Revival, Spanish Colonial, and Mediterranean styles historically rooted in parts of the United States. 'Designs diverging from classical architecture must convey the dignity, enterprise, vigor, and stability of the American government and command public respect,' the White House said in a fact sheet for the order, which also requires that Trump is notified when a building design deviates from the preferred style...."

From "Trump orders classical and traditional architecture for federal buildings" (Yahoo, passing along something from WaPo).

Justin Shubow, "the head of the National Civic Art Society [who] helped draft the order," taking the position that this wasn't a political issue, reminded WaPo about the time Barack Obama "accept[ed] the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008 in front of classical Greek backdrop. 'Whoever was stage-managing understood that this is how Americans think of the presidency. They do associate it with classical architecture.'"

I'd say that shows that it is a political issue. Obama was being political. It was not that he shared the ordinary American's taste for traditional architecture, but that he was trying to influence Americans to see him as belonging within the tradition that he and his handlers presumed they believed in. He wasn't elected yet, but, as we all saw at the time, he was acting as if he was already ensconced in the trappings of power.

Yes it IS political but I read the statement as combating the inevitable TDS reaction and communicating they weren’t selecting partisan architecture. These are not GOP buildings…but we’re not going to have the goofy crap where the new post office is a political statement on climate change ir abortion rights. No Pink Hat Post please..:

It would be funny as hell, though, if Trump deliberately went as lefty as possible in his decor choices. What if the press came into the Oval Office one morning and found it totally redone in Kinte cloth, with Trump behind the Resolute Desk in a fan-backed rattan chair, wearing a dashiki? Or if he gets Frank Gehry to do the new ballroom in swooping sheets of stainless steel? Or he closes his next rally, not with YMCA, but with norteno music as he dances around in a cowboy hat and boots? Or if he redoes the East Room in all white and has a white party with all his and Melania's gay friends? Of course, we know the answer to the last one: all the headlines would say "Trump Starts White Party." RR, JSM

Trump is all about empty appearances and counterfeit significance. Trump has no substance to offer, his play acting and turbulent assertions and ceaseless executive orders the stumbling performance of a (bad) ham actor. But...he's cunning enough to know his base is easily moved and tricked by his cheap lies, and disturbed by a changing world, the familiar swiftly receding from them. Who gives a shit about "classical" architecture today? What purpose or meaning does it offer? Those who most vent over such matters have no clue, other than a certainty that any variation from what they expect or are used to must be a trick...on them...a sign of the deterioration of and theft from them of the world they know, the destruction of the appearances of reality (as contrasted from real reality) which comfort them as a pacifier soothes the inchoate fears of a baby.

Yes, it’s political. And that’s fine. No matter how much we describe the standards, ultimately they are subjective. That’s inevitable and even good so long as it’s to the public’s taste, which it seems like it finally will be.

Public architecture is always political. The US built traditional Greco-Roman official buildings until well into the 20th Century. This was an allusion to ancient Greek philosophy, careful planning, and served as a reference to science drive that followed the European Enlightenment.

Similarly, the USSR, Germany, and Italy used 20th century official buildings to communicate their power and visions. The USSR put a ton of money into train stations and subways, as their political control followed from the railways, and trains resulted in unavoidable state publicity for the masses.

The mid 20th Century had the ugly "modernism" (now Brutalism) fad, and everyone except the designers hated it. Then, the post-modernists broke function in to pieces and turned buildings into non-functional jokes (e.g., see France's inside-out Pompidou center).

So, Obama 2008 and Trump 2025 merely return to millennia of traditional government building standards. "If columns were good enough for the Greeks and Romans and Founding Fathers, they are good enough for us."

It is political, but a universal and a non-issue.

Remember that Trump's order is taking a stand against political forces that have pushed a different kind of architecture that supported their view of government. This is like the issue of tariffs. You can't get away from the issues that surround international trade just by eschewing tariffs, for example, that's just taking sides. It's the same with architecture, if you leave the existing trends in place, you are taking sides. Count me on the side that enjoys beautiful architecture.

…as an undergrad my school had winter session what was an opportunity to enjoy campus in a less intense environment than regular semesters. The classes were low key fun and I took one called ‘Responsible Architecture’ where we visited various winners and losers in Boston and Cambridge. One of them was City Hall in part for the Brutalist building but also to visit what was called Boston Redevelopment Authority. The building is indeed Brutalist shit- hot in summer, cold in winter, leaky, self-destructing…ugly. Surprisingly BRA seemed rather functional and we learned all about the logic and reasoning of city planning. I suspect all those responsible have retired or been sacked in favor of leftie virtue and promotion. It is reflected in the city…

If your idea of acceptable architecture is some structure with a bunch of decorative doodads pointlessly affixed to the structure, youre simply being childish. Function drives form in a rational architecture. If you disagree it’s because you’re wrong

Great architecture combines form and function. You don't have pick one or the other. Creating beauty is not pointless.

"If you disagree it’s because you’re wrong"

That's what the screenwriters believed when they created the "Rey" character in that Star Trek reboot. If you can't work your design to be both beautiful and functional, well, like Harry Chapin said in that song about the baritone: "Another line of work may be in order."

We could ask ChatGPT to design a building consisting entirely of stacked boxes, after all, which would be the most functional form, in most cases, and any other effort put into the design, offsetting the boxes at an increased cost, for example, is really just another kind of "doodad."

Jaq said...

Why put windows in large windows in the executive offices? Aren't they just doodads?

Readering said...

Daniel Patrick Moynihan got around.

I should think with the shrink-the-deficit goal there would be cancelation of federal construction, not redesign. Los Angeles County recently responded to the post pandemic downtown office glut by purchasing a major tower for housing workers in anticipation that current county space will be functionally obsolete because of earthquake safety requirements. The federal government could also look to the depressed office market in many cities.

It's more of a monument. Seems like a tombstone. It's a monolith with writing on it. But the most striking thing about it is it isn't a presidential library at all. The "Obama Presidential Center" does not contain a library at all. The only "library" will be digitized documents available only on line

In Des Moines a few years ago, there was a prime piece of downtown real estate on the river where the old YMCA had been torn down, between the high-rise business district and facing the golden-dome capitol building on the other side of the river. The city wanted to use this real estate for some beautiful high-end condos to increase downtown living space. However, the old Federal Courthouse (Classical Revival, built of Indiana Limestone) was slated to be torn down, and there was some sort of first-right-of-refusal by the Federal government for any land becoming available in the downtown area for a new Courthouse. The city pleaded the Feds to build elsewhere (a courthouse can be build anywhere), but they swooped in and took over this prime real estate for another government building project.

The new building is a glass-and-concrete box with an awkward curved front, and has unadorned concrete columns on the front that make it look like it’s up on stilts. The sign at the new courthouse proudly proclaims that it was erected during the Biden Administration.

As far as video of the police standing by while Islamic males take young brit children - I don't know if that exists. Remember - youtube scrubs stuff.
But the ritual of Islamic males raping non-Islamic children - is real.

The semiotics of domination are what our betters want from their architecture. Trump is a man of the people, he's Rodney Dangerfield in Back to School. What other President would buzz the Daytona 500 in Air Force One? But for the tiny cabal which arrogantly plays the role of conquerors, and treats us like a conquered nation, like Starmer is doing to the British right now, any expense, the benefit of which goes to the common people is wasted, of course. They can install themselves in the most sumptuously appointed and furnished homes and offices, but why waste beauty on the common man, who only understands brute power? Anybody who doesn't believe this is wrong!

I very much agree with Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit, who has long demanded that all the politicians and government functionaries babbling about climate change be forced to set a good example by removing the air conditioning from their Washington palaces.
