According to [Mayor Olivier] Sarrabeyrouse, several municipal workers received direct threats from opponents who vowed to block the screening and destroy the equipment.
That's vague.
“The officers called me because they felt they were in danger. I was the one who decided to cancel the screening,” he said. Sarrabeyrouse dismissed the protesters as an “extreme minority of hooligans” driven by “obscurantism” and “fundamentalism”...
“All over the world, the film sparked debate and gave rise to numerous interpretations. It provoked a reaction from the most reactionary and conservative ideologues, especially far-right, causing yet another moral panic,” he said....
The Brussels Signa presentation makes it hard to distinguish the critics of the disrupters from the disrupters!
"Obscurantism" is an important word in France, as discussed on this blog here and here. Both old posts quote this definition of Obscurantism: "the practice of deliberately presenting information in an imprecise, abstruse manner designed to limit further inquiry and understanding." Ha. That's my problem with these news articles!
ADDED: If I may rely on Grok...
The screening was abruptly cancelled just before it was set to begin at 9 p.m., after a group of approximately 10 to 15 young residents from the neighborhood confronted and pressured city workers who were installing the equipment. According to Mayor Olivier Sarrabeyrouse (from the French Communist Party, or PCF), the group encircled the agents and issued verbal threats, stating something to the effect of: "If you install [the equipment], we will dismantle everything and put an end to your session." This implied potential physical disruption or damage to the setup, and the mayor described it as threats of violence against public service agents, noting that similar incidents had occurred in the same neighborhood in the past...
The opposers' stated reasons centered on the film's perceived promotion of homosexuality, transidentity, and what they called an "attack on the integrity of the woman," viewing it as too "woke" or ideologically objectionable. The mayor denounced these motivations as rooted in "obscurantism and fundamentalism instrumentalized for political ends," though he avoided explicitly labeling it as Islamist, instead attributing it to a "tiny minority of thugs" who likely hadn't even seen the movie....

What, no beheadings?
I mean, the town is called Noisy - what was anyone expecting?

“extreme minority of hooligans”
One? If such a small minority, how were they able to impose their will?
approximately 10 to 15 young
Maybe that's extreme minority; how many were supposed to be there? At a movie screening in my area; 10 to 15 people would probably be the entirety. If none of them wanted to watch it, then why even propose showing it? I'm confused as to whether these were "hooligans" or the people wishing the local political representations offered movie options that they wanted to see.
Yeah, the article is very poor in getting its point across.
an "attack on the integrity of the woman”
By which they mean that the women must be subjugated and kept in their proper place relative to men.
Hehehehee…..
I love it when the Left tries to deal with contrary views from a favored minority.
The London Times is no more trustworthy than Rachel Maddow when it comes to immigration or war or Trump. The UK media has been utterly captured, even The Guardian is a neocon rag now. European media is afraid to print any story that would offend any of their leaders, even Starmer, whose unpopularity is historic, and who has driven Britain off a cliff, is treated as the infallible arbiter of truth.
Labor and the Tories are both in on this policy, so the voters had no place to go to stop it. That's why Starmer has such a huge majority based on getting such a tiny percentage of the vote. Nobody turned up to vote because there was no real choice offered. No matter how unpopular Starmer becomes, his government will not fall because he got such a large number of seats in that sham election.
Wow. Imagine if there were scores of incidents of black American “youths” taking over stores to loot them, or doing “street takeovers” and the media reported on them without saying that 90% of the hoodlums were black?
Ann, you know all grok is doing is a search of internet-accessible news stories and social media posts, right?
It's not like grok has access to some facts that have otherwise gone unreported in the stories you can find with a search. That's why you get so many "wrong" answers, because it's not an independent brain, just a quick search tool of what is currently available online...
Most info is not available online, and timely. You have to go to the local sources. Hth.
(for someone who called herself a critical thinker, you sure do take grok as gospel...)
The French are just now figuring out what the Islamists are trying to do?
We are all fallen angels in their eyes and must bow down to them. Better that they go home.
The French are just now figuring out what the Islamists are trying to do?
Yeah, get to the UK, so they are helping them with boats.
Maybe, just maybe, if we stopped fighting wars in their countries, turning countries like Syria, Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, etc, etc, to rubble...
Naah! That's too much!
This is how Rome fell, but easy transportation and mass communication is speeding up the process.
Qaddafi warned us, told us that he was holding back the tide. We didn't care and the "peaceful alliance" NATO took him out, and he was sodomized with an AK-47 before he was killed.
Threats from Muslim youths have forced a Paris suburban council to cancel a screening of the film Barbie,
The suburban council in Paris simply had no other choice. The only possible action was to obey the teenagers. Yes, we sometimes have that problem in America.
Usually this happens when the people in charge agree with the thugs.
