"The surge of tiny clapping has led to an endless debate on TikTok about the proper way to do it."

"Some insist finger claps should be silent and bristle at people who say 'clock it' or 'tea' while clapping. Others take issue with influencers who clap with their index finger, when the middle finger is more commonly used in ballroom. (If this seems pedantic, imagine the reaction if you used your middle finger to give a thumbs-up.) And a notion has spread that the finger clap is supposed to resemble the American Sign Language sign for the number 8, because it means someone 'ate,' or performed extremely well. (Ballroom folks say that’s a reach.) As one commenter noted, 'Man the finger police is strict strict.'"

From "'Clock it.' We’re all finger-clapping wrong. As more people embrace finger claps, the queer ballroom scene is clapping back at those unaware of its origin and meaning" (WaPo).

Who cares? Yeah, I get it if that's your reaction, but this post earns some of my favorite tags. I like that.

This is ridiculous. My first introduction to quiet clapping was in the early 2000s at my child’s school. I volunteered in the library every week. The librarian would talk to the kids at the beginning of their library time and during that time any approval from the children was to be expressed with quiet clapping. It didn’t matter if it was finger claps or duck claps it just had to be quiet.

I can’t read the article so I can’t determine who might be appropriating from whom. My mother would say that it appears there are some that have a problem with sharing and also that there is more than one way to skin a cat.

It's tick tock, not tick tick a nit. Either way, its days are numbered.

Those crazy teens nowadays. Always coming up with these snazzy things to express their superior intellect.

You know what, if there are influencers out there to tell you what to think and do, and those influencers are getting rich. And you listen to them knowing that they are just using you, you are an idiot.

Bizarre vogue for snapping fingers to show approval rather than clapping. Clearly an idea of those who don't have arthritis and can't conceive of ever getting it. Finger snapping may not be so easy for everyone. Even seals can clap.

I'm old enough to remember when doing "the world's tiniest violin" was pretty much the same gesture as "you're a jerkoff."

I kind of hate the sound of applause so I like this trend now that I think about it.I particularly hate the sound of applause on musical performances recorded live where they leave the sound on the recording that they make for those of us who are trying to listen to music through headphones. It’s obnoxious.

That TikTok reminded me of the "being there/holding space" gesture.

They are both silent expressions.

I particularly remember this mileu on The Beverly Hillbillies. A couple of their better episodes, as I recall.
