If property taxes are eliminated in some states, where would the state raise money? In the states where this is being talked about, there is no state income tax.

I have been chastened on the issue of excessive carriage returns/line feeds. And on the issue of redundant signature blocks. I must accept that I have offended the community in both of these areas: excessive carriage returns/line feeds, and redundant signature blocks. While it is not an excuse, I must point out my reasoning. First, we have had several commenters who used signature blocks. I will not mention them by name, because I do not want to devolve to whataboutism, but I note the phenomenon because I saw it happening and thought that the host and other commenters must tolerate it. Further, I have seen the Prof's rule about excessive blank space. This historically was imposed because there was a commenter who habitually used large amounts of blank space - not a three-line signature block; more like 10 or 20 returns, I guess designed to simulate a long pause for effect. I certainly never achieved that level of extra spacing. I don't fully understand why any extra carriage returns/line feeds so enrage people. I use this blog on a laptop, tablet, and iPhone nearly every day, and while each format has its pluses and minuses, I find it easy to scroll through blank space on all three. But YM apparently V. So I reiterate that I will never again have extra carriage returns/line feeds in my comments. But this raises the issue of how many carriage returns/line feeds are excessive. Is it alright to divide one's comment into paragraphs, with a blank line between? I think this has both aesthetic and legibility benefits. But perhaps every column-inch counts for others. I would welcome peoples' opinions on this. Or for example, if you have a list. Is it better to have it inline, or to put each item of the list on its own line? e.g. 1) excessive carriage returns/line feeds are difficult to scroll through; 2) however, some line spacing may help to make the comment easier to read; 3) if you are reading the blog on a phone while moving, spacing may help you keep your place, versus a long undifferentiated block of text; 4) but perhaps such readers should defer to those who are unduly affected by extra line spacing. Was that list easier or harder to read inline? I would be interested in peoples' opinions. Also, we are already forced by the limitations of Blogger to have some redundant items in our comments. We have lost the ability to reply directly to a comment, so for clarity most people put a quote or a commenter/time cite at the beginning of the comment. This is ex definitio redundancy: the text being cited is just a few inches above, in most cases. But it's necessary for the comment (or rather the comment on the comment) to make sense. Finally, I would point out that it is quite possible to waste column-inches without ever resorting to redundant carriage returns/line feeds: by just filling the space with a big block of text. Are we to have a rule on that as well? If so, I will endeavor to follow it, just as I am now following the rule against excessive carriage returns and line feeds. RR, JSM

Gavin Newsome's ditzy wife weeps that "We are a country of immigrants. That is just a fact. It is who we are."
Meanwhile, the DNC Summer Meeting begins with an acknowledgement that Minneapolis is on "stolen land". Huh. How did that happen?

Hey Dave Begley - we're going to be passing through Nebraska tomorrow and want to know if going to a Runza will be rewarding. Your thoughts? They sounds delicious to me!

JSM, heh, I can't say I read the whole thing but I certainly appreciate the graphic illustration!

(And I say this as a particularly long-winded commenter who could probably use more line breaks...)

First Photo Althouse. Nailed it. Nice use of Rule of Threes in there, too (I’m visualizing it cropped into 16:9). Could probably enhance a bit to get to actual v what was captured but I know you are a minimalist when it comes to photo-editing and that’s great. Your photos stand up well as they are!

There's a solution for that. Go back home.
