"The wax lips is my statement against plastic surgery. I’ve been very vocal about the genocide of a generation of women..."

"...  by the cosmeceutical industrial complex who’ve disfigured themselves. The wax lips really sends it home.”

Said Jamie Lee Curtis, posing in wax lips and quoted in "'Generations of women have been disfigured': Jamie Lee Curtis lets rip on plastic surgery, power, and Hollywood’s age problem" (Guardian).
Obviously, the word “genocide” is very strong and risks causing offence, given its proper meaning. To Curtis, however, it is accurate. “I’ve used that word for a long time and I use it specifically because it’s a strong word. I believe that we have wiped out a generation or two of natural human [appearance]. The concept that you can alter the way you look through chemicals, surgical procedures, fillers – there’s a disfigurement of generations of predominantly women who are altering their appearances...."

And yet:

Curtis’s daughter Ruby, 29, is trans.... “I’m an outspoken advocate for the right of human beings to be who they are.... I’m a John Steinbeck student... and there’s a beautiful piece of writing from East of Eden about the freedom of people to be who they are. Any government, religion, institution trying to limit that freedom is what I need to fight against.””

I guess those Hollywood actresses with their chemicals and surgical procedures are not trying to "be who they are" but to be what they feel others want them to be. How "against plastic surgery" is Curtis? When is it "disfigurement"? When does she feel motivated to use the word "genocide"? One might feel inclined to say that each person is free to make their own decision, but when do onlookers judge them harshly? How do we know who is truly finding their real self in these medical cuttings and who is straining to conform to real or imagined societal expectations?

ADDED: Here's the question I was motivated to ask Grok: "Are trans women mostly attempting to look like beautiful women or is the goal simply to look like an ordinary woman (and to 'read' as a woman)? Or is it enough merely to feel, from their own perspective, that they are expressing their own personal idea of womanliness (or femininity) and not focused on what other people think of what they are seeing?"

The over-filled, over-stretched face with duck lips - it is a problem. It feels more like keeping up with the trend.. add a sad gray kitchen. Hollywood high school. Madonna.

A gentle face lift - to remove saggy skin?? - Reasonable to me.

But then what is the point?

It's despicable to use the term genocide in such a manner. The whole purpose is to water down the meaning of the term until it is meaningless.

Have you seen the new commercial with Lisa Kudrow and Courteney Cox? If Kudrow's had work done, she's retained a natural look. But looking at what Cox has surgically morphed into kind of hurts, especially given how beautiful she was.

There you have it, the absurd gyrations of the prog mind--the casual invocation and subtly antisemitic devaluation of "genocide," the denial of female agency by blaming x "industry" for women's troubles, and of course the blatant contradiction between opposing "unnatural" fillers for the sake of appearance and the wholesale mutilation of bodies in the delusional pursuit of transing them.

The shallowness of it is dispiriting. I look at my wife wrinkles and all, and I see the beauty of a life well spent, depth of feeling, laughter. She sees an older face because the Internet does not value age and experience.

Today when a woman is naturally beautiful without any fillers or augmentation, it's stunning and the attraction is overwhelming. Such a lucky person is more special than ever, and exceeding rare. Even such lucky women usually succumb to the temptation to "fix" something, which it rarely does. Some work is a good call, but few can resist overdoing it. It seems to be very addictive. That combined with seeing things as defects that are not.

I noted that disconnect -- trans-surgery vs. 'cosmetic' surgery (seriously, is there a real difference?) -- years ago on some talk show. The subject was one of those dopey surgery-addicted types that ends up looking like a burn victim, and how just plain crrAAAzy he is for having so much work done and the audience applauded heartily when he announced he was going to stop having more surgeries. (Bet he didn't)

I have no doubt that were he to have announced that he was going to have still more surgeries to make himself a woman , he would have received just as much adoration.

Curtis may have had some work done early in her career, but she has spent the last 10-20 years proudly not having any more, and not even doing much diet and exercise, then proudly dowding herself down for her roles, e.g. in Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Last Showgirl.

Gotta give her some props for that, although she probably has a lot of residuals to fall back on, plus she's Baroness Haden-Guest, married to a guy with broader British aesthetics (pun intended).

Maybe some women just aren't a good judge of lip size. They're flipping through the lip catalog, they're picking out a set of lips, but the lips are all wrong. All wrong. Maybe they bring a friend to help and the friend fucks them over, the same "friend" who encouraged them to get their hair cut really short.
And the plastic surgeons have no incentive to tell their patients to pick smaller lips because they charge by the pound for lips.
Seems to me there's an unmet need out there for lip size consultants. It's like interior decorators, some people need them or they'll create a horror show.

I worked for a while in a psychiatric hospital where seriously mentally ill people had been involuntarily committed. Never met any who thought they were Napoleon, but did meet a pretty young woman who believed she was Jon Bon Jovi's secret wife and stabbed a friend who argued the point with her.

The most common delusion of grandeur I saw was supposing oneself to be God Almighty, Jesus Christ, or Satan. One of them thought I was Christ, and he had died and was seated before the Throne of Judgment for admission to either Heaven or Hell. He was extremely agitated and anxious, as you might expect if you found yourself in the same position.

When the military is deployed to quell overwhelmingly peaceful protest, when elected officials of the opposing party are arrested or handcuffed, when student activists are jailed and deported, and when a wide range of civic institutions – non-profits, law firms, universities, news outlets, the arts, the civil service, scientists – are targeted and penalized by the federal government, it’s hard to avoid the conclusion that our core freedoms are disappearing before our eyes – and democracy itself is slipping away.

In any country on the cusp of authoritarianism, the role of the press as an engine of scrutiny, truth and accountability becomes increasingly critical. At the Guardian, we see it as our job not only to report on the suppression of dissenting voices, but to make sure those voices are heard.

Not every news organization sees its mission this way – indeed, some have been pressured by their corporate and billionaire owners to avoid antagonizing this government. I am thankful the Guardian is different.

Very sorry to hear that. I still remember the words to some of his songs I enjoyed many years ago.

In particular, the Russia-Ukraine war has lodged the lyrics of "Lobachevsky" in my brain as an earworm. I find myself absent-mindedly muttering,

"I have a friend in Minsk
Who has a friend in Pinsk
Whose friend in Omsk
Has friend in Tomsk
With friend in Akmolinsk
His friend in Alexandrovsk
Has friend in Petropavlovsk
Whose friend somehow is solving now
The problem in Dnepropetrovsk"

And, of course, Elon Musk reminds me of:

"Vahnce ze rakets go up, who cares *vehr* zay come down,
That's not my depahtment", says Wernher Von Braun".

That one's about Nazi rocket scientist Wernher Magnus Maximilian Freiherr Schickelgruber von Braun, who Lehrer hated with a passion.

Best to keep that in mind when George Clooney or any other TV?movie actor calls Trump "Hitler." It may mean nothing more to them than "poopy-head" on a playground.

Or perhaps Jamie Lee Curtis imagines that Dr. Mengele was a plastic surgeon, and everyone was sent to Auschwitz for glow-ups. Idiot wind.

And the other 6mm,about half Jewish.

I doubt that Randi Weingarten has ever said anything I would agree with.

She is pointing out that 12mm people were murdered by the national socialists and, for saying that, she is getting hammered as an anti-smite.

There have been many genocides, 100mm murdered in the 20th century alone by socialism.

Why should any one group get to claim a monopoly on the word?

In the Black Book of Communism (which you can’t buy on kindle) the authors state that the term genocide is essentially the same as (my term) a hate crime. Does the genetic makeup of the victims or the motive of the murderer really matter. Is the murder through starvation of the Ukrainians not as bad as the murder of Jews and Slavs? Or do we indict the regimes that perpetrated mass murder on the basis of the acts themselves.
Setting aside the term genocide, the reason the Nazi murders were so impactful was the method and the reason - the use of technology and the use of science (murder for the benefit of improving the genetic pool of those remaining). Until then these 2 engines of the 18th and 19th centuries were thought of in a mostly positive light. Some dissention but mostly positive. Education, by definition, makes you a morally better person. We found out that just wasn’t true.

For example, V1s were not made by slave labor in the Mittelbau-Dora camp in Thuringia. In fact, there is no conclusive evidence that KZ inmates or PoWs were ever used in the manufacture of the Fi-103 cruise missile. Throughout that weapon's history in Germany, V1s were built by the Gerhard Fieseler Werke in Kassel, 58 miles west of Nordhausen. Gerhard Fieseler was arrested, investigated, and release without charges by the United States Army in 1945. And don't go off half-cocked with some assertion amounting to Fieseler was released because he gave the Americans the secret of his buzz bomb, because there was no secret to give. Dozens of doodle bugs crashed landed in England and were examined in detail. By the end of the war in Europe the Ford Motor Company was already tooled up to produce a copy of the V1 for use against Japan based entire on captured examples of operational buzz bombs.

The V1 was low tech. Innovative repackaging of well known existing tech really. The value in it was rather like the current Iranian Shahid drones, V1s were easy to make in quantity. They were however easy to intercept and had poor guidance, so they were only of use in very broadly defined area attacks, if enough could be launched at once.

"My wife said that no mother would ever say anything different about her child." That indicates to me that we need a higher class of mother. (Why do so many homely men want to be even homelier 'women'?)

As to slave labor and POWs, it is well known that Soviet soldiers taken prisoner by the Germans were used as slave labor, and as test subjects for the death chambers. (Of course, hundreds of thousands chose to become Hilfswilliger--working as laborers for the Wehrmacht for a bit of pay and a chance to see the next sunrise.)

OTOH, many of the Germans captured by the Reds were essentially enslaved, but in the USSR slaves weren't uncommon to start with . . . After the first large batches (think Stalingrad) were mismanaged and wasted, later German POWs had some prospect of survival.

It is well known that some British/CW and Americans taken by the Germans were sent to labor as slaves alongside other victims of the Reich. Blacks and Jews were more likely to be mistreated in this and other ways, but they certainly weren't the only ones.

Some credit should be given to the French for being the first practitioners of genocide. Sadly, they've never been given proper credit for this. I suppose the problem is that committing genocide against your own countrymen just doesn't resonate......During the French Revolution, the Jacobins came to the opinions that no one in the Vendee region deserved to live. The people there had a different accent and wore different clothes than the Jacobins. The Jacobins hated them for that. The slaughter of people in the Vendee was widespread. The Jacobins used several innovative techniques to kill, but the technology of the time made it difficult. One time, they hered them into a large group and fired a cannonade of shrapnel at the group. This wasn't effective. A large number of the prisoners were simply mangled. The soldiers had to go through the mangled, screaming prisoners and dispatch them by hand. The soldiers claimed that it was, for them, a harrowing experience and did not wish to take part in such executions ever again. The Jacobins hit upon the happy idea of filling barges up with prisoners, and then sinking the barges. They had some rowboats around the barges with soldiers on board. to shoot those very few who had found a way to weasel through a hatch or porthole.... I think far more attention has been paid to the deaths of Marie Antoinette, Robespierre, or Marat than to the several hundred thousand who perished during this revolutionary program......I asked ChatGpt if any hard feelings remain. Apparently not. The Vendee region still votes conservatively, but who are they going to hold a grudge against?

LOL. Enlisted men German POWs in the USA were forced to pick cotton and cut sugar cane for pennies. They had no choice. We didn't starve them, because we didnt have to. Unlike Germany which was being bombed round the clock and blockaded.

BTW, After V-J many of these German POW in the USA were shipped off to France after WW II and toiled until 1950 for no money.

And millions of Germans POW and civilian were used by our "ally" the USSR as "slave labor". Probably 25% of German POWs died in the Gulag - after WW II. The last POW wasn't released till 1955. How many died building Soviet ICBMs, V-2s, or mining uranium. No one knows.

RCOCEAN II said...

Funny how all the "americans" are always so concerned about what the Germans did in WW II, and never mention the bataan death march, the 35 percent death rate of Allied POWs in Japanese POW camps, or the refusal of the IJA to take Allied POWs after their initial victories.

That doesn't bother them. Nor does Genocide in Gaza, but the Germans doing something to non-Americans, man that upsets them. 80 years after the fact. Its almost like they are really another nationality, some sort of non-American.

And German POW's were treated by the Geneva Convention? By who? Not by the USSR, our "ally" at any time . And not by the French, USA, and USA after the war. Thousands of German POWs died after V-E day because they penned up in POW camps by Eisenhower and given inadequate food and medicine.

In the USA, after VE day, the German POW ration was cut because the Geneva convention no longer applied. And we could get away with it. And I'm sure a German POW cutting Sugar Cane all day in LA, and being told: "Hey you're getting no pay, and we'll shoot you if you refuse to work, but that's not "slave labor. " was happy about it. LOL.

But why defend the USA Government? Didn't they put Japanese in "Concentration camps" ? Isn't Patriotism the last refuge of the scoundrel? So, if its not the "Good name of the USA" that is at stake, what is? Obviously its hatred of Germans. Or maybe its being upset that other groups aren't being "Centered" as the victims of WWII.

Mr Greeven had been a very young soldier for the Kaiser, too young for combat.
