"The Democrats onstage saw themselves as morally courageous. American voters, it turned out, saw a group of politicians hopelessly out of touch."

"Standing side by side at a primary debate in June 2019, nine of the party’s candidates for president were asked to raise their hand if they wanted to decriminalize illegal border crossings. Only one of them held still. Six years later, the party remains haunted by that tableau. It stands both as a vivid demonstration of a leftward policy shift on immigration that many prominent Democratic lawmakers and strategists now say they deeply regret, and as a marker of how sharply the country was moving in the other direction."

"The next move" = it's a game. You can't win the confidence of the people if they can see it's a game.

What can you do to demonstrate/fake sincerity? The old plan was to denounce Trump as a racist, and there are still prominent Democrats like Ayanna Pressley, who's quoted saying: "Democrats have to stop talking about the issue of immigration within a Republican frame. This has nothing to do with law and order. This is about power, control, terror, and it is about racism and xenophobia. Donald Trump wants to make America Jim Crow again, and then some."

Normal humans with less loyalty to the DNC see for themselves that the secure borders keep EVERYONE out who doesn’t belong. It’s the most race-neutral immigration policy ever implemented in American history.

When the Trump Administration started deporting illegals, there were people on social media who were saying things like “How many of them have committed a crime?” Of course, the correct answer is 100%.

There are a lot of people on the left and among Democrats who arbitrarily ignore laws they don’t like. Criminals, in other words. But “Irish Democracy” is only Irish Democracy when you have a supermajority of the people on your side.

In the latest America This Week (I think it was there - it might've been his July 4 "Come on, people, can't we celebrate America for one damn day?" piece in Racket News) , Matt Taibbi disappointingly says that he wishes we could still be the nation that accepted the world's tired, its poor, its huddled masses. I was disappointed because he left out the "yearning to breathe free" and because he made no mention that the immigrants of the Ellis Island period all came here expecting that they'd be working their tails off for years to come, in order to secure the blessings of liberty to themselves and their posterity, in contrast to the benefit-recipient "asylum"-seekers of recent years.

I like him a lot; he's often very clear-eyed. And indeed, he doesn't usually address the Biden open-borders policies as fulfillment of the "promises" on Liberty's plinth - he usually acknowledges their destabilizing effects. But I guess he's still a man of the left at heart.

This "deep dive" by the NYT can't or doesn't even acknowledge that "family separation" was not a Trump policy preference, but rather a result of court decisions that said the Feds could not detail whole families together pending deportation. NOBODY wanted to take children away from their parents. But entering illegally with a child can't just be a "get out of detention free" card for everyone either. Or you get even more exploitation of children.

Or its about "The crops are rotting in the fields" never on the negative impact of immigration on rents or anything else. 90 percent of immigrants and illegals do NOT, i repeat do NOT, work in Agriculture. But that's what the media always wants to talk about.

I was looking at the Demographics of NYC was shocked that 1/3 of the Senior Citizens in NYC were foriegn born. That's right, we're importing old people who go right on the Government benefits and need medical care. Just like we import criminals, uneducated idiots, the sick and the disabled.

Reader comments at NYT are shocking.
Most highly rated comment:
“The far left of the party needs to realize that their immigration policies are extremely unpopular outside of their blue bubbles.”
Comments are 90% against illegal migration to the US.
Another highly rated comment:
“As long as they back Kilmar Abrego Garcia and other ne’er do wells, the Dems will continue to lose elections. I won’t vote for them until they promise to never re-open the border. I’m not holding my breath.”
Here’s another one:
“Illegal border crossings are down about 98% under president Trump. The monthly peak of Border Patrol interceptions under Biden was over 250,000. Last month, it was 6,000.
We have, objectively, the most secure border in American history. It's astonishing that Trump has been able to deliver on his core campaign promise so quickly and so comprehensively. Most voters rightly see Democrats as the party of unfettered mass immigration, most of it illegal immigration across a wide-open border. Until that changes, Democrats will likely continue to lose on a national level.”
And another one:
“If you ‘decriminalize’ something you are de facto legalizing it. If you decriminalize shoplifting, you’re you’ll get more shoplifting. If you decriminalize illegal boarding crossings, there will be more illegal border crossings. The Democrats had a de facto open border policy and it cost them dearly.”
There’s been a tremendous shift in the attitudes of most readers at the NYT.

Aggie said...

I think one of the reasons that the Progressives attack Trump at each and every turn, even when it seems irrational, is that they recognize that Trump is much better at recognizing public sentiment, and getting out in front of it.

The Progressive way of using public sentiment is to engineer it into place - they'll use the media to propagandize an intention that might otherwise be unpopular, and prime the pump, so to speak.

They've done this with racial issues, with sexual issues, with class issues - and the intent is always to create a base for political power and plunder - to condition people to support things they ordinarily would not endorse. What normal person could endorse boys in their daughter's locker room, without being conditioned into accepting it?

But most people don't like to be instructed on their beliefs. Trump is very savvy at recognizing a groundswell of popular opinion, articulating it, and putting his political authority behind it. By doing this, his sales pitch is already more than half-way accepted by his audience, because they are already aligned. He aligns himself to ideas he can endorse himself, and this heightens his authenticity.

I think with time, and with his continued successes at governing, Trump's authenticity will become something that is accepted as currency of its own - and public opinion will begin to follow Trump's direction. This kind of political agency will absolutely drive the Progressive Left crazy, because it's an authority they dream of having for their own purposes, but never can attain - because their motives are always inauthentic, their methods deceptive.

Trump understands the power of branding.

Facts about what it costs the average American family to support the non-working, child, non-taxpaying working, and elderly illegal. Enact E-verify and enforce it. Audit people who are wealthy but don't submit income tax payment (w-6?) forms for lawn, repair, and home help. Target businesses known for breaking the law-- agriculture, hospitality, roadwork, yard-work, home healthcare, construction. Punish the owners. Deport all illegals who commit crimes, all who overstayed student visas, starting with those with decent countries to return to. Use state labor boards to connect youth and adults to these "jobs Americans won't do. Use newly abandoned job-corps sites to do necessary training.

@Althouse, thank you for the free access link. I see that — true to form — the Times cannot publish an article without slipping in a few anti-Trump lies and pushing a few Trump hoaxes. Commentator holdfast (8:53) disposes of the tossed-off allegation that family separations were due to Trump policies (unless they’re complaining about his policy of operating within the law).

But then there’s this: Congressional Democrats tried to step in, striking a compromise on a bipartisan border bill that would have made illegal entry more difficult while allowing admitted migrants to receive work permits more quickly. But Mr. Trump pressed Republicans to torpedo it, to deny Mr. Biden a victory and keep the issue inflamed heading into November.

I think I recall a bipartisan border bill that never got past the early negotiation stage, but my recollection was that the hard left Democrats killed it, not Trump. Can anyone confirm?

At any rate I see that now Democrats realize that resources to provide services to illegal immigrants must necessarily come from other component parts of the Democrat coalition, including, to their dismay, inner city black people? Mayor Brandon Johnson made that very explicit to his Chicago constituents, and they were much less than thrilled about it. More importantly just now the Democrats are learning that open borders are unpopular with Hispanic voters? They’re going to do listening tours? The Hispanic citizenry have been figuratively standing on the table to proclaim their opposition since before Trump came down that escalator. They have not been subtle, but neither have they been heard. That’s because listening requires open minds and open ears, and the Democrats possess neither.

You nailed it, Ann. "You can't win the confidence of the people if they can see it's a game."

This actually goes for both parties, but the GOP got a lucky pass with Trump. He does not fit into any conventional category. And he can zero in on what the majority of people want. Democrats seem so very far out of touch with the American people.
And here's the thing. This didn't happen overnight. It didn't just happen during Biden's term (or was that Ron Klain's term?). This has been a work in progress for the far left to drag the Democratic Party to the far fringes- for years. It was ignored by many for years until one day they woke up and realized they could not even publicly state what a woman was.

When you find you cannot even publicly define what a woman is, it makes it hard for you to recover in a snap (keep in mind, we have a Supreme Court Justice with this thinking problem.)

As long as it took the Democrats to be drawn to the place they now call home (siding with illegal gangs, antisemites, socialists, and Antifa rioters) it's going to take an effort, and at least that long, to regain the faith of the majority of the American people.

Over the last few elections I've been posting right here in the comments that there should not be another Democrat elected for two generations. That it'll take at least that long to clean it out.
I hope that comes to pass. Any shorter period and it will not be fixed- just covered over, waiting to pop out again.

The fact is, the Dem party is fundamentally a socialist party. Dems want unfettered control over the economy and society. The quoted post was in reference to those arguing for not deporting construction workers and hotel workers and the like, an idea even Trump has floated.

NYT closed the comment section at 1060 comments which is quite a few comments and also normal to eventually close the comment section. I thought eventually there might be an effort to add a lot of pro immigration comments. There wasn’t. Comments were uniformly against the current Democrat position on immigration.
Here!s an additional popular comment:
“This encapsulates the problem for Democrats ‘they see as an insidious and ambitious effort by the Trump administration to demonize and deport Black and brown immigrants’. Democrats see everything through the prism of race. That's why they can't wrap their heads around why people don't want illegal immigrants in the country.”

At this point the Democrats are a religious cult. Their religion is The Right Side of History. This is why they are consistently coming down on the 20% side of these 80/20 issues. They genuinely believe that History can only go one way and that it will vindicate them in the end. Unfortunately for them, History swings both ways, and History is currently being made by the other side.

"Donald Trump wants to make America Jim Crow again, and then some."

What Ayanna Presley wants to do is change laws and policies she doesn't have the votes nor the political clout to change. It's called democracy, and as St. Barry noted, elections have consequences. The people voted for strict enforcement of immigration laws. You don't have the votes to stop Trumps mandated agenda all you can do is whinge and lie about it and call him a racist.

Forty years in the wilderness seem to be required. A new generation of Dem politicians untainted by the Biden debacle must emerge.

I think a work visa program would be excellent for this sort of thing.

There would have to be tight controls and the program would have to be tied to working class wage conditions including minimum pay for visa employees.

Someone who understands the balance between labor and capital would need to manage the system

"Democrats have to stop talking about the issue of immigration within a Republican frame. This has nothing to do with law and order.

It has EVERYTHING to do with "law and order"
They came here illegally, they need to be deported. THAT is "law and order". Letting them stay is a violation of that

This is about power, control, terror, and it is about racism and xenophobia. Donald Trump wants to make America Jim Crow again, and then some."
For the Democrats it most certainly IS about power and control. They use the illegals to punch up their population in reapportionment, and they let illegals vote to make sure Dems win.

It's hatred of actual Americans not he part of the Dems

If virtue signaling was a currency Democrats could pay off America's national debt and still have money left over.
