I wonder how many innings Suarez and Bader will get in these last 55 games or so?

I tried to watch "The Brutalist." No. Give me a few more years before I take that on.

Commentary magazine has finally put up a paywall. It's just as well. The magazine isn't what it used to be and neither is the world and neither are we.

@Gerda, most definitely. But maybe not so much an impact on young healthy people.

Canada lets fires pollute America but thinks they are more environmental while cutting all the trees.

We had an official "unhealthy" air quality index of 165 here in East Central Iowa today, because of winds from the NE that were carrying the smoke from the Canadian wildfires.

Benjamin Franklin

The text begins by advising a young man that a cure for sexual urges is unknown, and the proper solution is to take a wife. Then, expressing doubts that the intended reader will actually marry, Franklin names several advantages of marriage. As supplementary advice in case the recipient rejects all previous arguments, Franklin lists eight reasons why an older mistress is preferable to a young one. Advantages include better conversation, less risk of unwanted pregnancy, and "greater prudence in conducting an intrigue."[1]
According to John Richard Stevens, the unnamed correspondent is a friend of Franklin's named Cadwallader Colden, and it remains unknown whether Franklin was serious or if the letter was ever delivered.[2] Whether serious or humorous, the letter is frankly sexual:
The Face first grows lank and wrinkled; then the Neck; then the Breast and Arms; the lower Parts continuing to the last as plump as ever: So that covering all above with a Basket, and regarding only what is below the Girdle, it is impossible of two Women to know an old from a young one. And as in the dark all Cats are grey, the Pleasure of corporal Enjoyment with an old Woman is at least equal, and frequently superior, every Knack being by Practice capable of Improvement.[1]

I remember this day specifically in 1998. It was a Friday, we closed on our house that day and I took my dad to the drag races for his very first trip.

On the drive home, we found out the Mariners traded Randy Johnson for Freddy Garcia, Carlos Guillen and John Halama.

At the time it looked like another Mariner screw-up. But Houston only got three months out of Johnson while the Mariners got a staff ace, a starting shortstop and a #5 lefty starter/long bullpen guy for a team that won (still record) 116 games just three seasons later.

Recently, your sunrise pictures remind me of my time in the navy. Away from land the sun lights the eastern horizon as far as the eye can see. Some of the career men, "lifers", would take their coffee out to the fantail to watch the sun come up.

Today's third picture reminds me of mornings on the Pacific Ocean.

Well with inflation going up and the onslaught of trumps biggest tax increase on consumers looks like COLA for 2026 may edge toward 3% instead of projected 2>6% That will help pay for my coffee plugs at COSTCO KIRLAND and all coffee products going UP!!!! It should help my monthly thoroughbred Horse Racing Bankroll INCREASE FOR PLAY. TACO DON will still do his retreats like MEXICO last minute. If he remembers what he is doing ,he is visibly more inept and cognitively shot then all seems. He is bent over like a neathandral guy, with bald wig on and a fat obese body and talk about the HAIRDO PIECE back some posts ,have you ever seen trumps pasted down look> COLA 3.1% YEAH BABY ,that'll be another $90 bucks or so for wagering..LET IT RIDE..

You know, it's too bad some people would rather resort to stupid name-calling as opposed to understanding how using one's leverage in negotiations can actually lead to a better deal than originally offered.

Just saw "The Detective" (1968) starring Frank Sinatra. Not good. mediocre script. mediocre direction. No humor. Lots of liberal speechifying (Abby Mann).

Duvall and Lee Remick wasted. Jack Klugman shows why he was a TV actor. Depection of Homosexuals seems almost camp, when viewed today. Wants to be "dark and gritty" but shiny new clothes and brightly lit Technicolor sets make that impossible. Ralph Meeker good as the corrupt cop.

A slow 2 hours.

RCOCEAN II said...

Oddest thing is 53 y/o, 150 lbs sinatra punches everyone out. Duvall hit in the stomach for being "rude to Gays". Ralph meeker gets beat up because Frank doesn't like him. And Knocks down another guy who mouths off to him. Nobody lays a hand on Sinatra - they just take it. Probably because Sinatra was the producer.

Today we leave for a month-long road trip while our house is on the market. Comps are such that we could make about double what we thought or equity was, so... considering the kids are all out of the house, it seemed like a good time to give it a shot.

Trouble is, having now knocked out all the little deferred-maintenance painting and changing out of ugly fixtures and taking a toothbrush to the corners, we kind of hope it doesn't sell this month - especially since I get Knee #1 replaced at the end of September and our house is ideally set up for my recovery. The best case scenario - and I find this weird - is that we get a full-price (or better - why not?) CONTINGENT offer, and that the buyers' house takes at least a couple of months to sell - such that we could have them pay our mortgage for those months and true it all up at closing.

Why would anyone buy now? Well, we're zoned to the best elementary, middle, and high schools in our district, which is ranked #1 in the Houston area, #7 in Texas, and in the top 1% of districts nationally. And all the buyers would need is a contract to enable their kids to start school on time. Bring on the expats!

While it's commonly called the second half of the season, the All-Star game is not at the midpoint. We are almost a month past the midpoint.

President Donald Trump and his economic policies are the reason for "crashing our economy" following the release of the July jobs report on Friday.
The latest jobs report showed that the U.S. labor market has slowed over the past few months, with unemployment inching upward and prior job gains revised to be weaker than expected. U.S. employers added 73,000 jobs in July, far fewer than expected, while unemployment moved to 4.2 percent from 4.1 percent.
Throughout both of his campaigns and presidencies, Trump has positioned himself as a dealmaker and economic steward who could "bring back jobs," lower costs and "Make America Great Again." Trump has pledged that his economic platform, which includes broad tariffs, tax breaks and expanded U.S. manufacturing, will help boost the nation's economy.

July jobs report was "way below expectations," in a Friday X post, adding that "May and June revised down as well." The Bureau of Labor Statistics wrote on Friday that "Revisions for May and June were larger than normal," adding that "With these revisions, employment in May and June combined is 258,000 lower than previously reported."
The May and June job gains were sharply downgraded: 19,000 jobs were added in May, well below the roughly 139,000 originally reported, and only 14,000 in June, about 133,000 fewer than expected.

These conditions not seen since 2020. Don't let Donald Trump gaslight you. He is failing Americans and crashing our economy."
Companies don't want to create jobs in Trump's chaos economy with weakening rule of law and rampant corruption."
Trump's first six months in office have been marked by a cycle of announcing, imposing, pausing and reimposing tariffs, a trade strategy that at times has unsettled global and U.S. markets.
Alex Jacquez, a former special assistant to the president for economic development and industrial strategy, told Newsweek that Friday's jobs report "confirms that Trump's policies have been weighing down the economy....Big downward revisions for May and June show that Trump's chaotic trade policies likely impacted the labor market more than we thought earlier in the year, halting a strong jobs market. Stripping out the health care sector, the U.S. has lost jobs in each of the last three months."
Michael Negron, senior fellow for economic opportunity at the Center for American Progress and former special assistant to the president for economic policy, told Newsweek that the "disappointing jobs numbers are the latest sign, after recent data releases showing an uptick in inflation, decline in business investment, and slowdown in consumer spending, that the economy is starting to buckle under the weight of President Trump's tariff strategy." SOLUTION = FIRE THE JOBS NUMBERS PEOPLE that's what wanna be dictators do, very simple. MAGA'S cheer loudly ,that's a boy donnie, you'll teach em. :(
