"Have you noticed that trump is one of the very few presidents who does not have any kind of pet? I would sooner get rid of those folks than the cats and dogs. Absurd."

A comment on the NYT article, "We Love Our Dogs and Cats. But Are They Bad for the Environment? Some pets have wide-ranging effects on the planet. Here’s how to lessen them."

In the comments, everything always gets around to Trump.

From the article: "Gregory Okin, a geographer at the University of California, Los Angeles, calculated in a 2017 study that the estimated 163 million cats and dogs in the United States consume a whopping quarter of the country’s animal-derived calories. 'If U.S. dogs and cats were their own country, they would rank fifth in global meat consumption,' he said in an interview. Pet food, Dr. Okin estimated, accounts for about a quarter of agriculture-related fossil fuel emissions in the United States. Globally, another study found that dry pet food was responsible for up to 2.9 percent of carbon dioxide emissions from agriculture and 1.2 percent of agricultural land use."

I'm thinking what about a person who overeats? What about the percentage of carbon dioxide emissions and use of agricultural land use that comes from American humans eating more than the recommended amount of food? I'll bet the food consumed by the average American adult has a greater environmental impact than the food consumed by an ideal-weight American along with his 45-pound dog.

Grok corroborates my intuition: here.

So I'd say to you who seek environmentalist virtue, you can have your non-large dog, but don't eat more than the recommended daily allotment of food.

Trump is actually a responsible pet non-owner. Pets like dogs and cats require stable environments. People who are reliably there. Part of the pack. Consistent discipline and consistent care. Knowing who is in charge and where they stand in the pecking order.

Otherwise you get out of control animals like Joe Biden's dogs biting everyone. Having pets just for show, being actually raised and bonded to a handler. Too confusing for the animal.

Trump as President...and Trump as the business mogul is not a stable environment and would not be a good pet owner.

I respect his NOT having pets and not putting on an artificial show of being a pet person..

Have you ever seen an article proposing that we add bugs to pet food?

We've all seen articles about how people should eat bugs because they are an efficient source of protein. Normal people scoff at the idea.

Dogs and cats don't care. Most have eaten a bug just for sport. Even premium dry dog food has grains or other filler that aren't naturally part of their diet. Cheaper brands have more filler. Why not add bugs to improve the quality of pet food?

Democratic puppets like Crook Joe - get dogs as props - so the media can gush over Joe and his dog.
Joe was an uncaring a-hole who had no time to care for the dog - and was obviously incapable of caring for the dog. the poor dog was left for others to deal with. The Dog obviously needed love, attention and training . But the dog, again, was a prop to be used. Dems don't care.

Leftists are inherently violent and eliminationist.

You know who was a fan of Hitler in the 30's? The NYT's. Then it was Stalin.

Censorship and State/Corporate control in ingrained in these people. They read the NYTs and other corporate media and anyone who doesn't needs to be suppressed or eliminated.

Part of being a member of the NYTs tribe is being elite and better than those people who don't read it. They are deplorable. Urban populations have acted like this for millennia.

That is why they are so comfortable with persecuting and killing their political opponents. This is why they have filled mass graves multiple times over the last century.

Not having pets ought to be a plus with those who aren't having children because of some environmental crisis or "the way the world is now."

If you are willing to let your family line die out because of scarce world resources or impending ecological collapse, you ought to consider eating your pets now.

"Leader + Beloved Pet" has become something creepy since Hitler. "President + Mandatory Pet" has been a cliche at least since Biden.

The dog food I won't buy is the fresh, human-grade stuff. My dog thrives on good kibble (I do buy a grain-free version), still hasn't needed her teeth cleaned though she's 6 1/2 years old, and doesn't cost so much to feed that my non-dog-loving husband resents her.

That fresh, human-grade food - yes, I know people used to feed their dogs castoff people food until commercial dog food became a thing. But these days, that stuff seems to me to reinforce the "pet parent" idea that more or less equates pets and children, which I think is a harmful misunderstanding.

Speaking of "pet food [that] comes from the cast-off parts of animals that humans won't eat" I'm still giggling about a news story I read 20-40 years ago. A man broke into a slaughterhouse in the middle of the night, grabbed 500 pounds of boxed meat from the area by the loading dock, and put it in the trunk of his car. He didn't check the labels because he liked all species and cuts of meat and was looking forward to a delicious surprise. The police laughed in his face when they arrested him, because all he got was 500 pounds of pork lips and pork anuses on their way to the dogfood factory. The good news was that it was only a misdemeanor because the wholesale value was only (as I recall) 2 cents a pound.

Bad pet owners!! Dogs need to know who is in charge. You don't have to be mean or physically harsh. Just consistent with praise and rewards when acting correctly and verbal disapproval and time outs when not. Perhaps a mild swat or nudge to get the young dogs attention.

Dogs want to be part of the group/pack and require a leader. If you are a bad, weak owner the animal will figure this out and decide that THEY should be alpha. Somebody has to fill in the vacuum.

We have had working dogs and hunting dogs who are extremely smart and opinionated. You just have to be stronger willed than they are and CONSISTENT.

It isn't the dog's fault. It is like bad parents raising juvenile delinquents.

You can't fake it with a dog or a cat--look at Biden's series of dogs biting pretty much everything in sight. And the ludicrous picture of our New Light Worker being pulled around by his newly acquired Portuguese Water Spaniel earned quite a few chuckles around the country. Like everything else about him it was fake.

And you don't necessarily have to be a "pet owner" with dogs or cats. I knew a couple of women--a legal secretary and a lady District Attorney whose pet was a horse. And there are those who like snakes, rabbits, hamsters and such. The point is--you can't fake it with a pet. They know (well I'll spot snakes more intelligence than I think they have).

Very much agree. Besides, there is the temperament issue. Some people just don’t hsve the temperament for dogs or csts. Maybe he could do fish. Piranhas maybe. Maybe a fish tank in the Oval Office with them, and he ends them with smaller fish, whenever he wants to intimidate a visitor.

I have three brothers (living). Two are real cat people. Third one might do well with one, but can’t get him to commit. My partner has always been a pet person, as was her mother. They had a series of dogs and cats growing up. Typically an overprotective German Shepherd and a Siamese cat. First one was a female, who was never neutered. The first Siamese was female, and named Tiki. She was only kept indoors when in heat, and a Tom got in there and killed most of the first litter. One of the survivors was named Tiki 2, and was the biggest, meanest, cat in the neighborhood. May not have killed any other males in the neighborhood, but came close a number of times. She also had a parakeet (that flew into the chili pot and died) and a rabbit (that ate something that killed him). We now have a cat (Tiki 3 or T3) and a small dog - both a little over 20 lbs. They often rate higher than I do, in her life. The dog now has arthritis, and the cat has a fatty heart and asthma, which he shares with my partner. Both probably made worse by the human food and treats she feeds them. I do the bulk of the pet caregiving, and probably wouldn’t replace them if my partner goes before I do. It’s just my temperament- I don’t mind pets, but don’t need them to replace human contact.

Both probably made worse by the human food and treats she feeds them. I do the bulk of the pet caregiving, and probably wouldn’t replace them if my partner goes before I do. It’s just my temperament- I don’t mind pets, but don’t need them to replace human contact.

And he famously did a trade deal over a couple holes playing golf one day. The reality is that he doesn’t sleep much, works hard 7 days a week, and golf is his escape. And accomplished more in the first 6 months of his second term that both of his predecessors did in 12years.

Trump might be wise enough to realize that his lifestyle is not easily compatible with a canine and we all understand the Dr. Evil memes would write themselves if he held a cat. So the downsides to pet ownership clearly outweigh any "optics win" he might garner for adopting a pet. It's not like the Media would praise his move anyway.

Conversely I do not own golf courses on multiple continents nor do I split my time between luxury homes in several cities. I can have all the dogs and cats my little heart desires.

Trump has given up on making winning deals with cats or dogs and he has moved on.

We who care deeply, truly, passionately about the Earth, who is our Mother, know that Earth is a fragile thing that we can destroy with our careless actions, such as breathing.
Dogs must be abolished. It does no good to say that your dog is acceptable because she only weighs ten pounds. Smaller dogs live longer than larger dogs so the number of calories consumed over its lifetime is still unacceptable.
Think of the children!

I'm glad Trump gets regular and age-appropriate exercise. Biden? None. Obama? Mom pants bicycling. Bush#2? Heavy farm work.

Jimmy Carter built houses. Before that, his physical exercises seemed to end in spectacles of disaster, but in fairness, everything was pretty ugly in the Seventies.

He likely considered keeping Buttigieg.
