As Americans, we are not comfortable with the idea of a party leader who isn’t in elected office. Countries with parliamentary systems are used to it. The old time Labor parties were really run by trade union leaders - everyone understood and even expected it. Not so much anymore, as the left realized it could win elections with college educated youth and permanently unemployed people, and tell the actual workers to fuck right off. State and local governments are pretty used to the concept of party bosses who don’t hold elected office, but as with old Labor, it’s probably because in those smaller arenas, people can see who the bosses are and what they’re doing.
The Obama cabal has been accused of running Biden. Even though so many lefties would love that to be true, no one has admitted it, because the broader culture is still uneasy.

Congress is specifically authorized by the Constitution to determine the order of succession to the Presidency if both that office and the VP are vacated, the 12th Amendment requires the VP meet the qualifications for the Presidency in the Electoral College vote which would include term limitations, and the 22nd Amendment only bars a person from being elected more than twice or more than once if they served more than two years of a term *to which some other person was elected.* The Speaker of the House is not Constitutionally required to be a Member of the House, in parallel with the President of the Senate being the VP, not a Senator.
@Steve, that's not correct as I pointed out in my response to Readering. In order to be elected by the Electoral College the VP must meet the same Constitutional qualifications as the President per the 12th Amendment. The only route around that is to be elected Speaker of the House, and have the President and VP resign. (What this really points out is that the Truman proposal of putting the Speaker of the House as third in line for the Presidency was a really dumb idea, and we should get Congressional leadership out of the Presidental line of succession.)

Ideally, Trump should pump up Vance for 2025 and 2026, then resign for health reasons just after the 2 year mark in his administration. Then Vance could be president for a whole decade, without any constitutional issues arising when he wins his two elections. Oh, didn't I mention? The Dem party won't win for a decade, now, without something like the harvestable mail in ballots of 2020.
