The theory was that if Israel forwards money to the fakestinians in general and Hamas in particular they would find material comfort and prosperity satisfying and would see that peace is more enjoyable than murdering innocent civilians. That they used the money instead for building, tunnels and rockets to more effectively murder people rather than building hotels, and swimming pools was not what they expected.

It used to be in Israel there was a significant number of people who felt that everyone wanted peace, Israel just had not offered enough. There was of course a significant portion that thought all that the Muslims want is murder. They’re no longer is any peace process. There is nearly not a single person, only the most extreme radical leftists, The is prepared to give them anything. Again, except for only the most radicalized leftists everyone acknowledges that giving them land will be nothing more than territory for freedom of movement for them to murder Jews.

And it is not like anyone believes that Hamas is the source of this. Most of the people who breached the barrier and came into Israel to murder and rape were not Hamas. They were the normal everyday citizens. It is the normal every day citizens that volunteered their houses to store prisoners. It is the normal every day citizens that allowed their schools and houses and hospitals and mosques to be used for command and control centers. It is not a problem. Most of the time, Israeli policy was to treat the Palestinian Authority as a burden and Hamas as an asset. Far-right MK Bezalel Smotrich, now the finance minister in the hardline government and leader of the Religious Zionism party, said so himself in 2015.
