Not dumb, but she is ignorant. She didn't know how to pull the garage door escape rope and maybe too weak to lift the door. People have lots of ignorance instances. Some may result in death.

And how do you know she was a Democrat? Maybe she was registered as Peace and Freedom Party or Libertarian.

Biden says good news in California… his son Hunter and his wife’s home may still be standing. Oh… also, he’s now a great grandfather.

How can you not be impressed by the compassion of this man!?!?!?

How many chances does this perp get? You think the normal PERSON GETS THE SAME TREATMENT?
A legal analyst said the judge presiding over Rudy Giuliani's defamation case just called the Trump ally's bluff.
Lisa Rubin noticed an update from Judge Beryl Howell, who is presiding over Giuliani's case in Washington D.C.
Giuliani was due in federal court on Friday to face another contempt motion involving Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, the women he falsely claimed stole the Georgia election for President Joe Biden.
Now, Giuliani has filed a notice that he wants to appear virtually because he's ill.
The docket says Giuliani claimed "severe knee conditions," "a lung condition ... requiring the use of an inhaler," and a "heart condition." There are also security concerns he labeled as "credible death threats."
Rubin said Judge Howell is calling Giuliani's bluff, asking that he sign, "under penalty of perjury," a "sworn declaration ... that, except for travel required for court proceedings, he has been unable to travel and has not traveled from his residence in Florida for the past 30 days."

It was chilly in my part of Florida this morning, low 40s, so I knew that it would be a good day to visit the local Manatee Park, where the manatees are drawn by the warm water discharge from the FPL plant on the other side of the highway. There were at least twenty manatees in the canal and the little observation area, and I got some nice pictures. I went around noon, when the sun would be highest in the sky and illuminate the water, making the manatees easier to see. It had warmed up to about 58 degrees by that time, but the water temperature was 78. I dressed like a northerner, in jeans, t-shirt, flannel shirt and hoodie. I've had enough winter, thank you very much.

Interesting Freudian slip on KTLA just a while ago. They were saying that there was no air support (water drops) for the fire because Biden was flying into LA then quickly changed their story to no air support because of the winds. Biden did fly in to LA yesterday to open a new national monument near Joshua Tree. He apparently didn't stick around and the visit was cancelled due to "high winds".

NorthOfTheOneOhOne said...

Sorry, the above should say "no air support for the fire last night...."

Dang, Althouse. You're killing it with the sunrise.
The folks who got burned out pay a lot of property taxes for fire and police and schools. Will they rebuild?
I probably wouldn't. This is far less than 99% paradise. What will tomorrow bring? I pray for the winds to cease long enough to catch up.

Bernie Sanders is trying to pretend that climate change is what has caused the Santa Anna winds in California. I wonder if he even knows who Santa Anna is and how long ago he lived that they named this regular phenomenon after him.

Thanks to rhhardin for the Ravel link. This is superb, listening now...

Those walls are definitely getting closer. I mean, you can't really see it, if you're looking right at 'em, but if you kind of squint, and look off to one side, you can just sort of sense that they are really closing in this time! Keep us posted, Dink.

Donald John Trump has declared war on the neocons. Just watch the first bit of this video, which is of Donald Trump answering questions at a press conference. Doesn't he know that this is the kind of stuff that got JFK killed, and Dick Nixon removed from office?

Trump genuinely wants peace. We will see how long he survives with these kinds of enemies.

Here is an analysis that takes Trump's words as seriously representing his thinking. It's pretty long. Mercouris is not sure how seriously to take Trump, to be honest, but shit has just changed in the foreign policy world.

https://theduran.com/trump-shock-fortress-america-greenland-no-ukraine-nato-europe-shock-iran-strike-coming/

I have been following this guy for three years, and while he was saying the exact opposite of what the news was claiming, he turned out to have been right, and the news wrong. Ukraine has been doomed to lose this war from the start, it was just a matter of how long, and all shipping weapons has done is extend the war and increase the casualties, not change its course. Based on Trump's answers in the press conference, this guy has some influence on Trump's thinking. RFK Jr has shouted out to this guy, and Jeffry Sachs has been on his show twice. Both members of Trump's "kitchen cabinet."

It's really terrible seeing what the fires are doing to the Los Angeles area. You know how it is, every place in the country is vulnerable to one sort of natural disaster or another that can upend your life. Here in Florida, it's hurricanes. They're the price we pay to not shovel snow. Elsewhere, it's fires, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, blizzards. And in blue zones, bad government, but of course that's a man-made disaster.

I've lived in Florida for 36 years and have been affected by major hurricanes in 2005 (Wilma), 2017 (Irma) and 2022 (Ian, which was probably the worst). All three times, I lost power for a few days and had shingle damage to my roof from Cat 2-3 winds. I know what it's like to suffer for a while due to nature's wrath, but fortunately my home wasn't destroyed. My heart goes out to the people in California who have lost everything.

One of the best things about finally discovering that it was Jemima Price who did that George Harrison tribute album that I loved so much last year, was that I was able to explore the rest of her catalog. She also did some cover albums of songs by Kate Bush, by Tori Amos and Joni Mitchell, and by various '90s sirens (including a bunch of songs by Björk and some by the Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde). She also did albums as the Jemima Price Band and Fragile House. Unlike her George Harrison tribute album Unfold Your Love, I didn't necessarily love everything on the other albums, but it was mostly pretty good. I would definitely recommend the entire Unfold Your Love album, though. Here's one of her Björk cover songs:

Jemima Price - Venus As A Boy

Here's another Jemima Price song, this one from her Kate Bush cover album. I was surprised to learn that Kate Bush did this one originally, since I was familiar with the Pat Benatar version, which I didn't know was a cover.

One reason why so many people are moving to the Austin-San Antonio area is lack of natural disasters. We don't get fires, earthquakes, blizzards, or volcanoes. Floods and tornadoes are rare. Sure it gets hot in the summer but as long as there is AC I don't mind. Also no state income tax and some counties freeze your property taxes when you reach 65. Please nobody else move here.

I see that Beiden has declared all kinds of disaster relief for California because he thinks Trump will be mean to them. I assume he thinks they will be treated in the same way he treated the people in North Carolina.

Since Beiden is on record saying there was no money left for NC I assume there will be no money to spend on CA either? Ha ha ha.

At ,east Trump can end the emergency at his discretion, but he will probably help them anyway, because he is not a stupid prick like Beiden.

Interesting tidbit about firefighting methods: "The idea of fighting forest fires from the air dates back at least as far as Friedrich Karl von Koenig-Warthausen's observations on seeing a blaze when overflying the Santa Lucia Range, California, in 1929."

I guess they rather use tax revenues on other things over there.

Bait and switch?

I suppose that's also what's happening with China's bullying of every nation around the South China Sea, its building of airports on coral atolls, pushing fishing fleets out of the area, running military exercises, etc., etc., etc.

I suppose that's also what happened with Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

In true reality, these are routine Great Powers territorial conflicts. Look it up. We are experiencing the post-WW2, post-Cold War control-and-influence realignment.

From its start, California allowed building in dangerous and unsustainable locations. Many of the wealthiest communities are affected: coastal landslides destroy roads and dump houses into the ocean and earthquakes routinely hit San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Major cities were built without local water supplies (e.g., San Francisco gets it water from Yosemite National Park on the other side of the state; LA destroyed Owen's Lake for water, and maintains 1,000 miles of Colorado River pipelines). Other coastal cities continue with intense local resistance to desalination plants (i.e., Santa Barbara, Monterey) -- requiring imported water.

Dreamers are gonna dream. Utopians are gonna live in their preferred fantasy worlds. Rich people are gonna get theirs and send you away.

Then, when you build a city with no water but plant imported species such ultra flammable eucalyptus trees in LA's Santa Ana Wind corridor, you will have fires...
