Clyde's Top 15 Favorite "New" Songs of 2024 - Part 10 of 16
#7 The Records - "Starry Eyes" - Shades In Bed - 1979
When you look at either Amazon-curated or user-created power pop playlists, certain songs come up repeatedly. This classic song by The Records is one of them. The English power pop band formed in 1978, and this jangly song came out on their debut album in 1979 as a kiss-off to the group's former manager and has more hooks than a tackle box. It's impossible to find any of their studio albums on Amazon Music, and this studio version of the song is only available on a power pop compilation album. There are a couple of live albums available, though.
Tonight and tomorrow millions of Japanese will be enjoying their traditional Christmas Kentucky Fried Chicken dinner. Merry Christmas to all no matter how you celebrate it.
I was just watching Good Will Hunting, and an Althouse moment came up. Daman was proving how smart he was by citing a huge number of Federal era cases about horses and carriages to stay out of jail on a charge of assaulting a cop, and he used the word "afforded" when he meant to say "accorded," what a maroon! Script writers should avoid trying to appear smaht, as Daman would say. Anyway, so I knew it was the wrong word, and I asked ChatGPT exactly why, and it turns out that "to afford" as a transitive verb has the sense of "to share," and "to accord" has has the sense of "to grant;" two different things, but not completely different. The tree affords you shade, but the Wizard accords you a heart.
On Scott Adams’ recommendation, watched Red One - free on Amazon Prime. Geared for kids, special effects - but not really annoying ones, enjoyed by the adults as well. Very nice Christmas movie. Merry Christmas everyone.
I always took that scene and the errors (multiple) as deliberate, as if Will had read and memorized the cases but lacked understanding of exactly what he was saying…
We just livestreamed the candlelight service of First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, S.C. It was 100% spiritual, not a hint of the Christmas trappings normally associated with this season. Focused entirely upon Christ, our Savior. May all have a holy Christmas.
It’s 5:30 AM EST, and my grandkids (9 month old twins and their Big Bro) are awake. Amazingly, Santa knew they were here and not at home, and has left presents for them. Kids and Christmas morning are a special treat.
And if any of you are looking for a place for end of year charitable donations, consider Samaritan’s Purse. I read this morning that FEMA still has people in tents in Western North Carolina. God damn all of you Democrats.
It’s very hard to sort out all of the factors that contribute to one candidate’s election; but I think the decision of some “red state” governors to ship illegal immigrants to “blue, sanctuary cities” may have been significant. If not in affecting the outcome in those areas, then at least in affecting the overall popular vote.

The Records - Starry Eyes
Bonus song: Starry Eyes - The Records | The Midnight Special
A pretty good live version. You can also find their song Teenarama from the same episode of The Midnight Special.

Merry Christmas to Althouse, Meade and all of the commenters, even the grinches.

I'm up for the Feats of Strength but would like to skip the Airing of Grievances this year...

That looks good enough to eat!
Our middle-aged dogs woke us up at 4:30 this am. You’d think we had toddlers in the house again…
