The interesting high-brow narrative is that civil society agrees to a state monopoly on violence, and here the state has withdrawn its promised protection of them. Where does the narrative go when the state uses violence on the citizens who take defense on themselves, the most incautious ones first of course. Maybe a story of hard-nosed prosecutors vs. jury nullification, a reminder to the state of its agreed responsibilities.
It was fascinating to watch a video of this incident on Twitter soon after it occurred and then to read the reporting of the same incident the following morning. The reporting line was that a right-wing guy started executing protestors. Journalism is dead. Pravda in service to Wokeism.
Scott Adams blames teachers' unions. I blame not teaching good character. Run inner city schools more like military schools for a start.

From the shipwrecked crew video montage it looked to me like the shooter was chased and physically attacked by a skateboard wielder before he shot back. All the victims had violent histories. Later, Dead Guy #2 Skateboard Dude runs up from behind and swings his board at Rittenhouse's head, barely misses, and then tries to take the gun. He grabs it by the barrel, but it has a sling attached to Rittenhouse, so as soon as the sling tightens, the muzzle is pointing directly at Skateboard Dude's stomach and it looks like the gun goes off, maybe because Rittenhouse still has his finger on the trigger of a gun that is being pulled away from him. (Interesting that Skateboard Dude has domestic abuse convictions). He made several bad decisions and will no longer have the opportunity to abuse, foreign or domestic.
Guy #3 had a handgun and was 3 feet away and, after pretending to surrender, certainly looked like he was going to use it when Rittenhouse fired a round that permanently "disarmed" him.
That's what I see.
It's hard to visualize how all this ends with a generally acceptable outcome. Since resistance by any means necessary is the leftie mantra, a Trump win in November will likely ignite the afterburners. The 17 year old has two traffic tickets issued in early August - one for speeding and one for improper license. Both Kenosha County. None of the other items you listed are him.

This is provable by noting he threw something at RH. Since this fact makes the initial presentation unsupportable the NYT omits it from their description understanding the left supporters will follow their lead in pretending this didn't happen.
Second encounter:
As Mr. Rittenhouse is running, he trips and falls to the ground. He fires four shots as three people rush toward him. One person appears to be hit in the chest and falls to the ground. Another, who is carrying a handgun, is hit in the arm and runs away.
Not "as they" rush toward RH, after they rush him. Also omitted is that one attacker gives RH a flying kick which connects but not solidly (this person escapes). The second attacker hits RH with a skateboard - again not solidly - and RH shoots him afterward (this is the second fatality).
The third person had initially rushed him but paused as the second neared RH. RH pauses in return. Only after this person re-starts his movement toward RH does RH fire again (this is the arm-wound survivor).
In every instance of shooting RH was attacked while attempting to retreat.
Notice every single omission and misrepresenation by the NYT is exculpatory to Rittenhouse. Their goal is to write the narrative which best protects BLM and Dems (i.e., themselves). They have no interest in the full set of circumstances or the truth.
This is going to end up like the Sandman / Covington Kids case where the left's own videos are going to prove the media narrative wrong.

I watched the video of the confrontation down the street that proceeded the shooting. That guy was one big asshole. Didn't realize at the time he was one of the ones who ended up getting shot. Not surprising.

"Ok, this kid has ran for a block and a half from me; I've now got him cornered and he's fired a single warning shot at me. I will charge him." Bad choice. I wish he'd made a different one; he didn't.
The skateboard guy? The man who we know now has repeatedly beaten one of his domestic partners and threatened her with further violence if she testified against him? His last choice was, "OK. We have knocked this kid we have chased for over a block to the ground; I can either use this chance to de-escalate the situation, or I can attempt a killing blow with my skateboard." Well, that's wrong. After, despite being older and stronger, failing to kill the child who was on the ground with his surprise attack, he decided to wrestle with the gun -- the gun the kid pointed at him *and did not pull the trigger on.* The kid offered him a chance to back off; he chose not to take it. He could have chosen differently, and did not.
The phony medic, who surprisingly has the least disturbing background of the three? His last decision before being shot, after seeing his friend lose, despite having the jump on the kid, was: "I know I have just surrendered to this kid who has twice shown restraint when shooting, but, I will instead, hope that, after multiple blows to the head, I can use my gun to shoot the wounded child on the ground." He now will probably lose his arm.
All three of these adults were given the chance to NOT commit a deadly assault. They chose not to.
Kyle isn't a hero; he's a kid who was put in a bad decision because the adults in his life failed him; the government failed him; and three predatory adults thought they could take a kid.
Likely he has sufficient cause for a self-defense argument.
Third Coast: I'm not an expert on bullets or firearms, but the damage done to the phony medic's arm lends some weight to a less powerful weapon is what hit the man in the head. It's also possible it hit at a weird angle, that his weapon maybe misfired and didn't fire as powerful a shot, or any number of things.
The autopsy will hopefully put it to rest; the kid seems to think he shot him (judging by the audio in some of the videos), which is why I tend to think that's most likely.

Every year on Veteran's Day our Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter gives a special assembly to our high school students. It is the ONLY reason we have school that day. At the end of the assembly, where survivors of our various wars talk about their experiences fighting overseas, all the students except the seniors are dismissed. Then. One by one. The men who lied about their age, some as young as 14 at the time, tell about how THEY spent their service years. There is never a single peep from any of the kids as they listen to what the "children" of years gone by have done to secure liberty for our country. It is a sobering moment for the 18 year olds who have had a cushy life.
So yeah. I have heard plenty of stories, all true, about how even younger boys are able to stand up for their community. So it doesn't surprise me at all that there are still young men who are willing and able.
Except for the fact that THERE ARE young men willing and able in this day and age.

Anyhow- a large part of the charging document consisted of statements Rittenhouse made to the police on scene. Now if an adult comes up to a policeman and volunteers information that could be incriminating and the policeman just listens without asking questions, it's all admissible in court.
Rittenhouse is a minor. Seems to me any statement he made, even volunteering beforehand, is going to end inadmissible because as a minor- he cannot knowingly nor unknowingly waive his right to silence. Matter of fact, once any police found he was under 18- they should have told him to shut up. In order for anything he said to be admissible- it would have to have been made with a parent, guardian, or legal representative present. Is that a correct interpretation?

Either way, if you wrestle with someone on the ground after trying to crack their skull open from behind... it is very hard to argue *the guy on the ground who just got sucker punched and attacked, and let the last person who attacked him and backed off go is using more force than needed when he hits you with a single shot, and doesn't fire any additional shots when you stop attacking.*

It isn't that Huber gets shot, then Gaige starts moving. Gaige is moving in to attack the entire time; he only hesitates with his hands up and gun out after Huber is shot. He then decides, screw it, and tries to kill the kid again.
This charging instrument is weak tea.

Well being a Baristas with a worthless SJW degree, student loans, and living in mom's basement does not generally produce the wealth a collage graduate might have expected, to afford a car and its related expenses. The legal issue is whether Rittenhouse was in fear of his life, that is, whether he has a self-defense claim, for either shooting. I suppose that will eventually be a jury issue, unless he pleads out.
A possibly related issue is whether Rittenhouse was violating the law by openly carrying. The NYT claims that it is a Class A misdemeanor under Wisconsin law for a 17-year-old to openly carry. What say you, Prof. Althouse? Even if that was a misdemeanor, I don't think that would affect the self-defense claim, but I'm not a Wisconsin lawyer and will defer to those who are.
Lets see reparations - payment to the families of 360,000 Union soldiers (republicans) dead from direct conflict involvement + Riot damage costs... Guess you gotta pony up there Mr.EMCEE!

Indeed, an armed society is a polite society. But you have to convince the impolite once in a while.
Purely anecdotal, but the number of people I have met recently who say things like "I have never wanted a gun before, but I do now" is very surprising.
Not anecdotal - over 2M people bought their very first guns in the first half of 2020.
In hindsight, the video of the Great Baldini inviting deadly force seems strong evidence of Karma. May he reincarnate as a fetus destined to meet "Dr." Gosnell.
I don't see why it can't be said, on the one hand, that the Rittenhouse fellow ought to have stayed at home etc etc and, on the other, that 'he is a hero'. I don't know that I'd use that term myself (because I don't know his motives, nor the exact sequence of that night's events etc) but they aren't necessarily mutually exclusive propositions. Circumstances make the man, sometimes.
