Kamala cautiously takes on the criticism "She’s very cautious."

So David Axelrod had disparaged Kamala Harris on at least 2 occasions:

1. “She is an incredibly compelling personality; a very bright and accomplished person... But she’s very cautious — and that caution was pretty apparent in a lot of her answers.”

2. “She’s a brilliant person, there’s no doubt about that... But what we’ve learned so far is that she’s great at asking questions but timid at answering them. She’s going to have to correct that to navigate this process.”

And it's not as though KH noticed and decided to push him right back (which is the sort of thing Trump does (he always hits back)). Politico put her on the spot and asked. You can't be very cautious and sound timid when asked whether you're too cautious and timid, can you?
Asked by POLITICO about Axelrod’s concerns — part of a line of criticism that Harris aides and allies broadly believe is tinged with sexism and not applied in the same way to the men running for president — Harris paused for a few seconds before saying, “I don’t know what to tell you."
Wow. Politico had to try to cushion the effect of the embarrassing confirmation of Axelrod's take. Look at that ridiculous extra material inserted in between the dashes. That's not what KH said when asked, and it's such mushy stuff — "broadly believe," "tinged."
“Axelrod was on the road with Barack a decade ago,” she added. “I’ve invited him to come on the road with me ... (and he’d see) “contrary to what he thinks is happening.”
She won't defend herself in words. Can that work in politics? I can imagine the most wonderful person in the world responding to attacks by murmuring "If you really knew me, you wouldn't say that." But would you choose that person as your champion, to do battle for you against bold adversaries?
As for whether the critiques of her are grounded in sexism, Harris said some of those making the charges about her “should do a better job of performing themselves.”
Again, she confirms Axelrod's take. She won't be direct. She exhibits nice modesty. I think it is better for female candidates to refrain from characterizing criticism as sexist, but you still need an answer, and her failure to answer is more evidence that Axelrod is right.

Incredibly, Politico's article ends with a quote from Willie Brown: "I would have said, ‘What did he say? I didn’t read it... Axel-who?'"

That forces me to go looking for what, exactly, is the connection between Kamala Harris and Willie Brown? I only remember the crude joking that continually turns up in the comments. Here's a piece published yesterday in The Washington Examiner: "Kamala Harris’ first significant political role was an appointment by her powerful then-boyfriend Willie Brown, three decades her senior, to a California medical board that has been criticized as a landing spot for patronage jobs and kickbacks. Then 30, Harris was dating 60-year-old Willie Brown, at the time the Democratic speaker of the California State Assembly, when he placed her on the California Medical Assistance Commission [which met twice a month]. The position paid over $70,000 per year...."

Really??? We must have some evidence of a statement like that, right? I mean, you can’t just put something out there like that without evidence, can you?

It's sexism to even run. Go for the vagina position.

Only women can understand women's problems, but women's problems come from a complaint instinct. They don't want solutions, they want problems to complain about.

So we need a woman president.

Caution would be the rule, lest a solution be suggested.

Reminds me of the folks that defended Hillary by saying, I know her well and if you could see what I see outside the bright lights of the campaign, you would see what a wonderful, honest person she is.

People pose and preen but over the course of a political campaign, with lots of meetings and appearances and interviews, we do get to know the person behind whatever mask they are wearing. Everyone reverts to type. This is the only benefit of a two year campaign for POTUS, IMO.

The crude joking here relates to a real problem Harris has: she slept her way to the top. But for her good looks and sleeping with Willie Brown, there is no way she’d be Senator now.

Even Trump has become cautious--I would say, not wanting to be seen as a guy who makes children cry. He seems to have given in to the Washington swamp, at least to some extent, on open borders and endless wars. He seems prepared to be judged on the overall economy, and maybe some deals with foreign leaders, proving he and America are still strong. One would think there is more to life than GDP, and there are many problems in the U.S. itself that need addressing. What do the Dems have to offer? Both Biden and Harris seem to think a kind of Hillary with fewer flaws--long governmental experience, able to be tough, substantial co-operation with the progressives--will win. Many progressives with all their parsing of the latest language on diversity and humanity are impatient with all this and want to support "the only real opposition." Could it be that Trump could win as long as he achieves some results on the border, thus winning over "the middle"?

I am more than happy to look at Kamala on TV with the sound off. Unlike Gilibrand, her looks have changed, but not faded. As far as I can tell, her looks are her main qualification for the job. Maybe I am wrong. I would love to hear some of this “brilliance” of which Axelrod speaks.

“Brilliant" used to mean able to show us stuff we hadn’t seen before, now it means “agrees with me."

For Harris, the Peter Principle applies in more ways than one.

traditionalguy said...

This is a learning curve for the ambitious lady. My prediction is that she will get promoted by the powers that be for being slow to attack back.she is docile enough to be controlled.

tim in vermont said...

Maybe somebody should have pressed Axelrod for examples of her “brilliance."

tim in vermont said...

Axelrod already played Cyrano de Bergerac with Obama, except instead of whispering words to him through a balcony vine, he put them in Barack's mouth through a TelePrompTer.

The problem with putting words in Kamala’s mouth is that it immediately points out that she has gotten where she is by letting men put stuff in her pretty mouth.

She should get back to telling us her real radical idea. Like abolishing Immigration and Customs. Of course, ICE employees, who are the KKK, should be tired and convicted for Collusion with Russia and Obstructing Justice.

If Harris really had the chops to be President, she’d be the Governor of California.

Senator is a diversity showcase for the party, not where the real business is done.

See also: Warren, Liz.

No one in Mass is talking about how she’d make a great Governor.

Never-Biden Never-Putin said...

Kamala should get back to lecturing us on how we should let everyone who crosses the border IN, using asylum laws. If we disagree, we are all racists and KKK.

Brown gets away with this because he’s spent his career in California.

On the national stage, you have to answer the questions.

Bernie would be the most disastrous President but not the most unlikable candidate. Warren is far and away the most annoying candidate but she's more annoying than crazy. So there's Kamala's lane: "I'm not crazy, annoying, or old.". This clearly differentiates her from most of the other front runners.

Surprised that Althouse forgets the particulars about how Kamala Harris achieved her success. It's easily remembered in one sentence which quickly illustrates why women who value honesty, fair play and genuine achievement will not vote for her. Instead of climbing the ladder with integrity and competence, she took the easy sleazy way out. Women who created accomplishment in their lives without resorting to whoring themselves to a disgusting old man, giving his wife the finger while she was doing it, have nothing but scorn for that nonsense.

Willie Brown is a brilliant politician.

Part of his disarming schtick was he would tell people to their faces the facts of political life, even, often enough, the press. How horse-trading and purchase went, about corruption as just part of the landscape, and broad hints that he was on the take. With a smile.

If you want frank commentary about politics, ask Willie. The press doesn't bother Brown much because, probably, he would let a lot of inconvenient cats out of the bag.

The Kamala things weren't the only tabloid-material activities involving misuse of public funds. He gave other mistresses jobs and grants, some a lot more than Kamala. Brown almost reveled in his minor corruptions as he used these as his armor, cultivating in the press an affectionate "oh, its just Willie up to his tricks". And he posed as a cute, colorful character willing to gossip. That was why he was such a source for people like Herb Caen.

But he could buy politicians the same way, and tell everyone he was doing it.

Michael K said...

I read yesterday that there are several horror movies with ICE employees as villains being made. Mass killers, etc. Hollywood's opinion of America.

There was a good government proposition back when CA was sane to turn redistricting over to a panel of retired judges instead of the Legislature. Willie ran a campaign against it that was outrageous but succeeded.

After the election was over, he appeared on a TV show bragging about how he had fooled the public. Just Willie.

Here's my advice to the little ladies who are running for President:

Girls, we aren't electing Chief Victim of the USA. We're electing a President. She will be responsible for leading and protecting the country. If you can't handle criticism because its "sexist" - how are you going to handle Putin for the Chicoms?

rcocean said...

"Of course, ICE employees, who are the KKK, should be tired and convicted for Collusion with Russia and Obstructing Justice."

We have a disorganized, scattered group of 1,000 people who belong to the KKK but can't show their faces without being fired from their jobs and shunned. And its completely infiltrated and monitored by the FBI.

But everyone pretends there's a significant Group out there called the KKK. Meanwhile, we have a large Communist party in the USA - but everyone pretends they don't exist.

The assumption here, as to the role of President, is that the office holder is largely going to be a figurehead, a head of state, and that the executive powers will be exercised and important decisions made by a committee, an unofficial one probably.

This is the usual case in fact, that one is not electing a person to office but a team, where the face on the posters and the talking head on TV is often just that.

Very much as the Obama administration was conducted. Obama was mainly a figurehead.

LA_Bob said...

Michael K,

That was one of four Schwarzenegger proposals placed on the ballot for a special election in 2005. It wasn't just Willie Brown and the Democrats who didn't want it. I received a flyer from Judge Wapner (of People's Court fame) urging a "no" vote. I got the impression from the flyer Wapner was a Republican, but I can't now confirm that.

Tom T. said...

The professor seems to have missed the fact that Brown was married while Harris was openly "dating" him (indeed, he still is). That's a downside of nominating her; Democrats lose the ability to criticize Trump's personal life. "When your man's a celebrity, his wife lets you do it."

Jupiter said...

A brilliant person, no doubt about it.

Michael K said...

Yes, I think both parties opposed it but the Democrats had the most to lose as they controlled the Legislature. They finally elected a Republican majority one year and Willie got a turncoat, whose name I forget, to switch and vote for him as Speaker again.

That's why I called it a "good government" initiative.

Anybody who blows the California Bar exam on the first try (Ms. Kamala Harris) can't be thereafter identified as "brilliant". But remember that Hillary blew the DC Bar exam on her first try---and that's an exam a law school grad should be able to pass if his or her breath can fog a mirror.

I'll cut Kamala some slack on her dalliance with Willie Brown. He is, was and can be a very charming rogue. He probably bedded more women than Martin Luther King Jr., and MLK set a very high standard in that regard. And he certainly knew how to put his hand in the taxpayer's pocket.

Gotta say that I find her modesty endearing. And it leads me to believe that she doesn’t much care about all the rote SJW jive that she routinely spouts. She reminds me of the quiet studious high school girl who bogarts all the sweet prizes on Scholarship Night. Sure, there’ll be something in her essay about climate change and social justice but it’s calculated, something to show she cares. But watch out. She’ll shop you for smoking in the school parking lot. But it isn’t personal. The dangers of secondhand smoke and all that.

rcocean said...

"The assumption here, as to the role of President, is that the office holder is largely going to be a figurehead, a head of state"

And that assumption is WRONG. The President is as Bush-II so elegantly put it is "The decider". At the very least, the POTUS decides who to put on his "Team" and also decides how much to delegate. So, even if he's a rubber-stamp, he's decided who's giving the documents to Rubber-stamp.

In any case, even an empty suit like Obama, decides whether to do option A or option B. Or appoint X or Y to be Secretary of Whatever.

Kamala Harris is stupid.

She fucked Willy Brown to get where she is at. She has no talent and has a mediocre intellect.

She says things she thinks people will like with no sense of personally integrity or moral core.

She threw people in jail for smoking pot. Then she bragged about doing it in college because she thought it would make her cool with whoever.

She will be a figurehead VP at best.

buwaya said...

"So, even if he's a rubber-stamp, he's decided who's giving the documents to Rubber-stamp."

Has he decided? It depends on his personality, and who chose him for the position (not the voters), who financed him, who will reward him when he leaves office. And moreover whether the people who he nominally leads will do his bidding, if against their own interests.

The power you cite is on paper. Real power is something else.

Harris has been conditioned to respond as a submissive woman.

Service the boss orally, get the promotion. Submit, get rewarded.

You are like HuffPo when they refused to cover the "clown candidate" Trump. Harris is known for trading sexual favors for job opportunity, you are going to have to address it. You can see from the interview how it has stained her character. In a Monica Blue Dress kinda way.

I want to write that Spy Vs Spy comedy. An underground cell of 6 KKK goons.

The protagonist is a Micheal Scott (The Office) type character who's unclear on the concept of White Supremacy, but joined because his older brother (that he idolizes) had to join a white gang while in prison for protection.

The other 5 KKK are government moles of various agencies who are each unaware of the the others. Most of the script consist of federal follies as the agents attempt to set each other up.

Imagine the wordplay between an FBI agent trying to entrap an ATF agent into buying C4. :)

And our Micheal Scott just blissfully strolls through whatever nets the others set for each other.
