"Hundreds of supporters of Bernie Sanders drowned out the Vermont senator with boos Monday..."

"... as he tried to make the case on the first day of the Democratic National Convention that his fans would need to vote for Hillary Clinton in order to defeat Donald J. Trump."
[T]he crowd remained fixed on their support of Mr. Sanders and not on the idea of defeating Mr. Trump. Over and over again they chanted, “We want Bernie. Bernie. Bernie. Bernie.”

The reaction from Mr. Sanders’s supporters was consistent with the anti-Clinton message delivered by demonstrators earlier in the day. Some pro-Sanders protesters took a harder turn on Monday, chanting “Lock her up” in an echo of the message of the Republican National Convention a week earlier, fueled by the resignation of the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.

I enjoyed Trump's Town Hall today. He said he isn't going to pay the bill for the Hotel they used.

No way, no air conditioning, you don't get paid! His lip was all wet, and he was dying on stage.

Still, he did well, he covered all the bullshit topics that float the party.

What I didn't hear him say is his willingness to liquidate the FDA and the USDA leadership and downgrade them from the Cabinet. These people have destroyed Americas food system to pay back China for their loans that keep our printing presses working day and night.

Now, they're heckling the Dems, & shutting down speech they don't agree with under the Dems' tent. Oh, I guess it's because the Democrats are saying hateful & divisive things.

7 tips for Bernie delegates for having a successful insurrection:

1. Pace yourself. Boo only 100 times a day. Keep track like a pitcher's pitch count.
2. Don’t be a one-person parade! When a Boo Wave is forming, join it.
3. Use slogans. A few are ready-prepared: "Lock her up!" "I'm not with her" and "Up yours, establishment" (I prepared the last two). Invent some new ones on the fly. If they take traction, tweet them immediately.
4. Eat a lot of beans.
5. Use zen techniques. Greet with silence prepared applause lines, especially if the word “Trump” is in them.
6. Wave Mexican flags.
7. End each night with a master cheer: "Trump! Trump! Trump!" even if you don't like him. Why? Because nothing will cut to the heart of the Hillary/Wall Street Industrial Complex like this one word.
Be safe! Be smart! Good luck! You have a lot of people back home cheering for you.

To step back from these Democratic & Republican scenes of chaos & view through a longer historical lens, what I think we're seeing here is the death of machine politics in the US. I think that new communications technologies have made the sharing of information that the party elites parceled out only to the inner circle both simple & impossible to contain.

I'm not saying what'll emerge on the other side is better, either. It may lead to a new decentralization or it may lead to a new & improved techno-savvy fascism (fascism always was techno-savvy, actually).

What will happen I don't know. You guys have gotta pay me more if you want me to see the future.

In a comment on another thread I asked whether Bernie Sanders actually led "his" voters. It didn't get much response, but it does explain what just happened.

Let me be more specific. To what extent are the Bernie Sanders voters voting for his policies and to what extent did his voters pull the lever for him as the 2016 ABH (Anyone But Hillary) candidate? The ABH phenomenon was pretty well documented in 2008, but seems to have become invisible in 2016. Why is that the case? Where did the 2008 Democrat ABH voters go if not to Bernie? Maybe a few changed their minds and were assimilated into the Clinton coronation, and some may have joined the Greens, but surely not all of them.

And now Bernie has stabbed them in the back.

Gusty Winds said...

Although I am fully enjoying the chaos so far, Bernie couldn't pull votes from the minority communities that went heavily for Clinton. White people in Madison aren't going to win you the nomination.

You need votes from the African-American community. That's why the DNC was floating the "Atheist-Jew" narrative. Liberals in Madison might not care, but that's a deadly combo in certain demographics of the Democrat base.

First, you can't prove a hypothetical. Second, there was that George Wallace problem. He got 13.5% of the vote, mostly Democrat.

Thirdly, Jerry Ruben and his confederates had no intention of influencing the Democratic Convention, they were out to destroy it and the political process generally. They weren't partisans of Eugene McCarthy, they were admirers of Leon Trotsky, and like their idol were out to destroy bourgeoise democracy in the name of "the People". In that aim they failed utterly because the only thing American viewers saw was chaos and a Democratic Party unable to cope with the chaos — the viewers came to despise both the rioters, the ham-fisted Richard J. Daley, and the feckless Hubert Humphrey. In contrast was Nixon, looking cool and in command. The voters saw Humphrey as Chamberlain, the well-meaning chump, and Nixon as Churchill, the tough-minded realist.

The disruptions happening to this convention come from a well-founded anger at corruption in the highest places in the Party, not a bunch of professional agitators.

Shiloh's analogies to 1968 are bogus and ignorant.

buwaya said...

"And now Bernie has stabbed them in the back."

We can work this into the script, no problem.
It goes well with that reconciliation thing.

After the Bakuninist Propaganda of the Deed incident. It feeds into the motivation for that part of the drama.

Someone will sacrifice themselves in an emotional reaction, somewhere, probably not Hilary. Maybe Huma, that will work. The pathos and catharsis will resolve the betrayals, and etc.

They will all be singing together before the curtains come down.

Big Mike for the win!

Yes, Sanders was a proxy for ABH. ABH formed part of Obama's winning primary coalition in 2008. Several months ago- probably sometime after New Hampshire, but before Super Tuesday, I pointed out that Sanders had no chance to win the nomination because he couldn't secure all of Obama's primary base- specifically, Sanders couldn't keep Clinton from reclaiming the votes of African Americans- voters she lost in 2008 for obvious reasons.

Like Mike, I don't think they will follow Sanders into suddenly being enthusiastic supporters of Clinton. Surely a great majority will vote for her in November, but a good portion of them will either vote third party, or more likely simply sit it out.

At this point they see her and Trump as both corrupt and dangerous, and having their suspicions confirmed that corrupt Hillary also had the DNC leaning for her only made it worse.

If she loses, this will be why. She couldn't find a way to stay clean for a couple years to get elected president--because a Clinton is a Clinton, and corruption is all they know. The one silver lining to a Trump presidency would be finally crushing that grafter couple's scam.

Every "what if" in favor of Humphrey has a "what if" against him. Truth is, Humphrey got clobbered. Even if all the electoral votes for Wallace had gone to Humphrey, the latter would have still lost to Nixon by 64 electoral votes!
