Whatever you do, don't say "maintain" to Mayor Bloomberg.

(Via Gawker.)

And let me just say that maybe this clip makes you think Mayor Bloomberg is nuts or at least unbalanced, but it makes me love him!

It makes me think he's an insufferable prick, although I'm always happy to see reporters put in their place.

If only Bloomberg got as incensed about nanny statism as he does about the metamessage behind a question.

As it is, he's no crusader for truth. He simply didn't like the implication of the question, which suggests the reporter pushed the right buttons and needs to investigate further.

I am on Bloomberg's side on this one. If reporters want to ask a question, they should just do so in a direct way.

Most importantly though, it worked: There was another reporter ready with a question. If the rest of the press had refused to ask any more questions until the previous one was answered, then the power would have shifted back to the reporters.

Heh, and they say McCain has too much of a temper.

Right.

Love him. He is so bitchy and jewish and New York with a dash of Boston. What more is there to love?

What a killer combination in an American.

Wow, Ann is anger-blogging today!

Bloomberg didn't sound particularly nuts to me -- clearly "maintain" does have the implication that it's not the truth, but a position which may be right OR wrong.

But I go back to one of my return-to-Althouse replies here when I said what amazing composure President Bush has had, during 8 years of constant baiting by reporters, insults flung by foreigners including heads of State like Hugo Chavez, and a general beat-down by people.

Not once have you seen this man explode, or even be particularly rude in public.

How does he do it? Probably still on the sauce.

Cheers,
Victoria

Liar!

AWESOME!! He's absolutely right. Damned reporters.

Hey guys, let's try to inject "maintain" and/or "clumber" into our conversations this week.

Not here, but in our daily lives, like say, at the supermarket checkout.

"I maintain you have not substracted my coupons to the total."

Et cetera.

Cheers,
Victoria

It's difficult for my rare clumber to maintain an erection.

That's probably why they are rare.

Ruth Anne: are you suggesting the rare clumbers would be the canine equivalent of Kobe beef in Korean bul go gi? Apologies to Titus, but YUM.

It's true. You republicans are heartless and mean.

I am a compassionate conservative.

Ha!

I maintain that clumber erections are not something we discuss in polite company.

My rare clumbers don't get erections.

Sorry to disappoint.

I can tell some of you on here are excited about a rare clumber erection.

I find that sick and repellant.

Rare clumbers are for respecting, odoring and loving-not talking about their erections.

Classless. I expect more from this blog. If you want to talk sex talk you should go onto one of those anti-american democrat sites.

There, feel better about yourself?

You can't make X billion dollars without processing the words in real time. Anybody else for Bloomberg for VP? The US can get him for peanuts I tell you; what a deal.

Bloomberg was about 25% correct, but come on, I (we?) don't know whether this reporter was the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree, and for a lot of lousy writers and speakers, "maintain" is a synonym for "say".

Bloomberg's horse is so high he could jump off it today and never hit the ground before we all die of old age.
