Let’s talk about the Democratic debate... now, with Bloomberg.

It starts at 8 Central Time, and there’s a Trump rally starting at the same time. That’s all too late for me even to consider live-blogging, but I may write something tonight. Don’t expect much from me until tomorrow.

ADDED: My son John is live-blogging here. I’ll just say it’s awfully chaotic, with way too much Angry Bernie face. And I really can’t stand to hear them go on about health care. And by the way, Bloomberg blew his chance to make a decent first impression. He’s dull and he looks like death. Who did his makeup?

And I really can’t stand to hear them go on about health care.

How horrible it must be for you that more Americans care that their nation no longer remains the only industrialized country to kill thousands of its own annually through lack of coverage than about the theatricality of their leader, which is apparently the only part of the job that interests you. What a crime against humanity.

Your parents must be really proud to have raised someone like this.

Hopefully someday you'll grow up and learn to get your drama from fiction and a sense of purpose from fighting for leaders who take life and death issues seriously. You know. Like how normal people do it.

mccullough said...

Bloomberg’s strategy is to project calm competence. He’s trying to win over the non crazy Dems. He’s not going to acknowledge that Stop and Frisk or some NDAs are a big deal. The people who give a shit about that stuff aren’t voting for him. If you’re explaining
then u are losing.

He talked about how NYC went from 650 murders to half that. The guy defended the policy while giving a non apology.

Bloomberg doesn’t give a shit about people’s feelings.

Large. Raucous. An absolute blast. Waiting for the most important numbers:

# of attendees who are registered democrats
# of voters who did not vote for Trump in 2016
# of voters who did not vote at all in 2016
# of voters who are suburban women
# of voters who are minorities

You know, unimportant "stuff" like that.

Bloomberg won by a lot.
On a stage of character actors he came off as a real guy who questioned himself.
He has been studying Reagan's performances. Remember how Reagan's debate performances were so often stumbling but he always had one or two minutes of sheer sprezzatura that even the liberal 3 networks had to show again and again the next day?
Bloomers did that tonight.

Also Bloomberg was a way better mayor of NYC than the current guy.

The stupid stuff they threw at him was no more effective than the lies about Trump allegedly claiming he actually "grabbed then by the pussy."

Sanders has got to stop pretending he is Bert yelling at Ernie.

It will be Bloomberg v Sanders from now until the end of April.

If Sanders can stop trying to treat the rest of America as Ernie to his Bert, he has a chance to stay on top of the polls.

I don't think he can stop though, because, as Jeeves used to say, when explaining people to the other Bertie (Drones Club not Muppetville)
"it is the psychology of the individual"

I watched for half an hour or so and couldn't stand it. It was so bad that I was willing to turn to the Sean Hannity show--almost as bad and then went looking for something else.

Bernie's "angry face" makes me think that he's going to have a stroke if he doesn't calm down. When I was a young man I'd get very upset about things--mad enough to snap some muscle fibers in my back--producing a blood clot--which in turn made me lean over at about a 30 degree angle to take the pressure off the clot.

I stopped that at age 22 when my childhood general practitioner told me that the next snapped blood vessel or muscle might be in my eye--creating a blind spot-- or lead to a stroke. Well that made me think I'd better learn to control my emotions--and I did.

Bernie on the other hand keeps having steam come out of his ears and eyes. You can't be President (not that I want him to be) if you've "stroked out" before the election.

Warren was on the war path, but I don't think she won any votes beyond the true believers. Remember how everyone said Carli Fiorina destroyed, utterly destroyed Trump with her pithy put downs. Maybe not. She struck me as being more hectoring than forceful. I know. Misogyny on my part, but there you have it. Klobuchar was marginally likable. I could live with her for four years....Bernie struck me as obnoxious and opinionated. He's more irritating than Warren so maybe there are limits to my misogyny....Buttigieg was okay, but his poise and sincerity look a little rehearsed. That incipient beard was definitely premeditated.....Biden wasn't befuddled but he looked like a spent force....Bloomberg didn't have such a good debate, but his dullness was vaguely reassuring. He seemed a little aloof. When you have thirty or forty billion dollars, it's hard to be engaged in such foolishness. I could live with Bloomberg. That's not to stay I will vote for him.

Again, you are criticizing Bloomberg, who railed against "the communists" tonight.

Awwwww.... What's a matter, did your pacifier fall out?

Who the fuck is so lonely that he lives to be treated well in pseudonymous comments section on the fucking internet? THis is not Cheers, "mccullough," and no one here comes because they all know your name.

But they can point out that unrighteous apathy is your own mental illness. And it seems to be at the root of every evil the world has ever seen. Like all those people who did nothing in Europe during WWII. That's you, "mccullough." Those people are your kind, morally speaking. Or immorally, as is your case.

All that's necessary for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing. But poor mccullough, he's not even good enough to be called out for doing nothing. He's a moral weakling who demands to be treated respectfully as a moral equal to men of average means. Which would be funny if it weren't so ridiculous.

Go f yourself, mccullough. While others watch. ANd do nothing.

If only all Americans were as ashamed of their ancestry as mccullough and his right-wing replunderican friends were.

Hey, Trump's granddad ran brothels in Alaska because even his native Germany didn't want a criminal coming back to it... for a draft!

And Trump's daddy (the guy who trust-funded Trump) told Trump to lie and say they were Swedish.

I guess some people are really ashamed of their ancestry. Or at least, Trump and his followers are.

INteresting.

Don't worry mccullough. There are plenty of people who are not only not way less unaccomplished than you, but not bashful about it either. But that's life. You should get used to it. Their not being as below-average as you doesn't make them arrogant, it just makes them less self-conscious than you are about your many good reasons for being as humble as you are.

Don't use your mediocrity to demand humility of others, mccullough. It only shines a spotlight on your own below-averageness.

I do hope Sanders is the dem nominee. He has had great photo opps with totalitarians- che castro, soviet leaders. The left might not be able to suppress the truth about communism and socialism. A new generation just might be introduced to what those old, sad, discredited ideologies have to offer. The education system certainly hasn't even made an attempt to do so.
Sanders has spent decades in Congress and as a politician. and has nothing of note to show for it. He is good at yelling at people, and at enriching himself. But not so good at actually accomplishing anything.

Now to the serious business:

Sanders and Warren had the best night- Sanders mostly because Bloomberg imploded the first hour, and as the frontrunner, he is now set to win in Nevada and South Carolina, and will be well positioned to win most of the popular votes on Super Tuesday. Warren's performance was great, but mostly in the taking down of Bloomberg. It won't save her candidacy- she was finished after New Hampshire. Biden seemed alive and alert the first hour, but seemed to me to flag a bit in the second half. Buttuvwxyz and Klobuchar seemed to be trying to one up each other, but it didn't really help either one of them. On balance, I think Klobuchar got the better of Buttuvwxyz who just strikes me as a know-it-all who doesn't know it all.

Bloomberg- wow- completely unprepared for questions he should have expected to get from the moderators at the beginning, and the attacks from the other candidates. There is no excuse for not having something better than what he did have. He had the right instincts about the stop and frisk, but not the courage to defend the policy on the right grounds. Yes, I think the policy itself is a constitutional violation, but he should stood up a bit more for what was his policy decision rather than trying to pass the buck to other mayoralties. The NDA and tax stuff was just horrible.

I read a few of the comments above that Bloomberg did well be seeming calmer and saner than the other candidates. That doesn't matter in this particular case- this is a primary voting contest, not the general election. Turnout at primaries and caucuses, especially those after the first 4 are 20% turnout events- you have to appeal to the more radical side of the Democratic Party, that is especially true in such a fractured field. Bloomberg killed his candidacy, I think, by showing up at this debate. He should have kept with a strategy that at least had the appearance of working- get a good result on Super Tuesday- that would have at least given the other candidates pause in attacking in one of the later debates, but he didn't do that, and the field gutted him and wore his carcass during the aftershows that I am scanning right now.

I predict the betting odds for Bloomberg drop tomorrow and Sanders' rises.

Well, I didn't watch the debate but have now read a number of analyses of it. Bloomberg flopped is the general theme. He came across as poorly prepared - for the attacks by the other candidates - and did a terrible job of explaining his public history, policy ideas, and so forth. This surprises me, I genuinely believed he would arrive prepared for anything that came his way. Wrong.

So it looks as if he is just the latest shiny new thing to trot himself out, rise in the polls, and then crash and burn.

Looking more and more like Bernie will be the guy. If the professional Democrats and elite let him.
