"Iran's parliament is set to pass a bill regulating how men dress in public..."

"... banning apparel that 'is against public modesty, such as clothing that does not cover a part of the body lower than the chest or higher than the ankle." But the Basij, the nation's morality police, is already enforcing the law. They have been beating and arresting men caught wearing shorts in public, at a time when temperatures reaching 45° Celsius (113° Fahrenheit) and frequent power outages have led many men to wear shorts outside."

The Regime in Iran cannot fall soon enough. The people of Iran are actually pretty cool.

Putting to one side the amusing confluence between Althousian and Islamic fashion dogma, I can't help but wonder what form of spiritual dissonance is promoted by permitting the male knees to be promiscuously flaunted? Our knees, though quite necessary, lack the individual variations and potential perfections that promote eros. They're kinda awkward looking.

Anything but the tyranny of shorts

I'm thinking this meets the Althouse Seal of Approval.

No shorts, who cares. They need to ban their men from going topless. Fat, sagging titties and hairy is not a good look.

Freder Frederson said...

How come this didn't rate your "men in shorts" tag?

JK Brown said...

Interesting they impose this now, that those at the universities in 1979, who brought for the "revolution" are entering their mid-60s. And no longer likely favor shorts for public dress.

They are beating men now? A sure sign Iran is becoming more egalitarian. That's good.

On a first glance I read men as women... Eventually they'll get around to regulating how trannies are supposed to dress. Baby steps.

Iran's Government represents the will of their people. Not a Government I'd want, but live and let live. Anyway, its good they're taking a stand against shorts, and wearing speedos in public. I'm sure women of Iran approve.

Bob Boyd said...

Regulating women's dress is one thing, but this!
Nuke 'em.

Will the religious police be minding the gap(s)?

“Is not the most erotic portion of a body where the garment gapes? In perversion (which is the realm of textual pleasure) there are no “erogenous zones” (a foolish expression, besides); it is intermittence, as psychoanalysis has so rightly stated, which is erotic: the intermittence of skin flashing between two articles of clothing (trousers and sweater), between two edges (the open-necked shirt, the glove and the sleeve); it is this flash itself which seduces, or rather: the staging of an appearance-as-disappearance. ”

How come your question contains an untrue assertion?

The inability to distinguish a legal requirement from an individual free choice is truly distressing. Clearly, you don't know the meaning of freedom.

Although there is the obvious "morality police" theme today, I can't help suspecting Althouse selected this story mainly for the "men in shorts" tag, which just hasn't had the usual Summer exposure it seems to get most years.

Ann Althouse said...

I passed on a NYT story about men wearing shorts as wedding attire where the woman is wearing a bridal gown.

Meanwhile, the April Defense Intelligence Agency report documented the economic impacts of the Iran-proxy Houthi's attack campaign, which has resulted in an approximately 90 percent decline in container shipping through the Red Sea, financial strains on shipping companies forced to divert around Africa, and compounding ongoing stress to global .aritime trade.

Thanks Joe Biden!

We hold these truths self-evident that all men are created equal and can dress like slobs if they want. This is America, Goddamn it. If some man wants to walk around purple hair, barechested in a speedo with a sparkler in each nostril, that's what this country is all about.

jaydub said...

I split my time between Florida and Gulf Shores Alabama partially because I can dress in shorts, tee shirts and sandals practically year-round. Only a single Karen in the great frozen North seems to care that I wear shorts, and her hectoring will never cause me to care that she cares.

So, I've got that going for me. Which is nice.

RCOCEAN II said...

Just remember, Washingon and Lincoln fought for your right to wear shorts.

I always find the Iran hate amusing. Other than taking hostages 45 years ago, they've done nothing to the USA. i don't get worked up about small countries 5000 miles away.

Because the first time I read it, there were no tags. I don't know if it was a problem with my browser, you hadn't added the tags, or blogger. But I was just commenting on what I didn't see.

Sorry.

Considering what they make women wear I think they should require men to wear full length wool pants at all times.

Field Marshall Freder, you still owe me a link! You claimed, falsely, that I have called for lefties to be hung from lampposts. You even claimed it had happened a number of times.

So where's the link?

" I don't know if it was a problem with my browser, you hadn't added the tags..."

If you don't know by now that I wouldn't add the tag surreptitiously and act like I'd had it all along I don't know what to say. I've been writing this blog for 20 years and I don't do things like that. If I'd left the tag off I would have thanked you for prompting me to add it. How are you a good faith reader of this blog if you could think otherwise and write and publish that thought?

In fairness, they brook no indulgence of transsocials or transgenders (e.g. homosexuals). To their credit, they also don't celebrate albinophobia in parades, on government walls.

I apologize to you on this one minor point, Achilles called for lefties to be hanged from lampposts. Maybe you didn't use that exact example but you have certainly advocated violent, extra judicial violence.

As I said, it is hard to find exact quotes searching through the Althouse files. But I will keep an eye out for the next time you advocate violence (it won't take long) and point it out to you.

Freder Frederson said...

I know that you often thank people for pointing out typos and omissions. I also know from my long history with you that you dislike me, and I wouldn't expect you to extend that courtesy to me.

Besides, I clearly stated three different possibilities. I will dismiss the first possibility.

You could have been nice and simply said "I attached the tags before I posted, sorry you missed it", and be done with it. But that is not in your nature. Instead, you accused me of posting in bad faith, which considering the frivolity (at least I hope you are not as rigid about men in shorts as you claim to be) of the tag, you would have just let it slide.

Instead, I have to waste my time defending my post.

Drago said...

Field Marshall Freder, replacing one debunked lie with another: "
"I apologize to you on this one minor point, Achilles called for lefties to be hanged from lampposts. Maybe you didn't use that exact example but you have certainly advocated violent, extra judicial violence."

I have never explicitly, nor implicitly, nor even alluded to nor expressed support for "violent, extra judicial violence", in any shap, manner or form.

Therefore, you will never find any post of mine which will satisfy your latest lie which we'll just toss on the ever growing bonfire of your previous lies.
