I want to thank Althouse commenters who politely and informatively responded to my questions about legal issues related to the FBI raid. (especially Buckwheathikes)

I want to share this opinion from a legal expert (McCarthy of NRO) https://www.nationalreview.com/2022/08/trumps-privilege-claims-are-beside-the-point/

"So of course the FBI took privileged documents from Mar-a-Lago. To repeat what I laid out over the weekend, the warrant that the bureau executed, approved by a federal district court in Florida, authorized the agents to take every shred of paper generated during the four years of the Trump presidency that it could find. Since presidential administrations produce mounds of work product covered by the executive and/or attorney-client privileges over a four-year term, the search was always likely to result in the seizure of at least some privileged material."

The murderous thug who was the Ayatollah Khomeini had this to say...

"Allah (God) did not create man so that he could have fun. The aim of creation was for mankind to be put to the test through hardship and prayer. An Islamic regime must be serious in every field. There are no jokes in Islam. There is no humor in Islam. There is no fun in Islam. There can be no fun and joy in whatever is serious."

Reminds me of the bad Christian monk in The Name of the Rose

Hated humor and wanted to kill anybody who had fun.

One of my favorite books about Christ is called Beautiful Outlaw.

"Experience the playful, disruptive, extravagant personality of Jesus."

It's not hard to spot the humor of God if you look. Anybody who wants to kill people and is an enemy of happiness is (seriously) working for Satan. Writers couldn't write you any more evil. When you are so bad you become a dehumanized caricature -- when you dehumanize yourself! -- you are not serving God.

One of the basic commandments of Christ is to have joy and spread joy.

Living in 2022 America, you can fully understand why the Founding Fathers were cautious about the power granted to a Federal Government. Also, why States demanded the Bill of Rights prior to ratification. It also seems clear why there was no Federal Police force until 1908.

Unelected Federal agencies now operate unchecked. Omniscient power. They cannot be reigned in at the ballot box.

Feels like we’re past the point of no return. The all out totalitarian nature of our Federal Govt, and their weaponized agencies is going to have to play itself out. I have no other prediction how this will all play out other than, it’s going to get worse. I’m just following what looks like an obvious trajectory.

Sorry.

McCarthy at NRO more times than one can count has been obtuse.

Now they are abusing the grand jury system to hide the affidavit from public and legal scrutiny, just like they abused the FISA system.

The Mar-a-Lago raid was a fissure expedition.

Guardian Headlon: "Justice Department asks not to disclose affidavit behind Mar-a-Lago search" - Link

The US justice department asked a judge Monday to keep sealed the affidavit that gave the FBI probable cause to search Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort over his potentially unlawful retention of government secrets, aggravating distrust within the former president’s circle of political advisors.

The affidavit should not be unsealed because doing so could reveal the scope of the criminal investigation, justice department prosecutors argued in a court filing, days after the Mar-a-Lago search warrant showed it referenced potential violations of three criminal statutes.

Uh-oh. DOJ refusing to release affidavits supporting the raid on MAL.

Listen to this BS:

"If disclosed, the affidavit would serve as a roadmap to the government’s ongoing investigation, providing specific details about its direction and likely course, in a manner that is highly likely to compromise future investigative steps," the 13-page filing says."

No shit. Isn't that exactly what the DOJ owes anyone subjected to the kind of obtrusive and unprecedented raid Trump was subjected to? And by the way, we don't really have much to charge you with without further investigation. So we don't want to give you any information you might be able to use to defend yourself. If we do, it's "highly likely" that it will screw things up for us.

Trump and the American people deserve more than this horse shit.

I asked my sister, who's a biblical scholar; 'I noticed the bible said Jesus wept and was moved to anger, but is there evidence that he ever laughed?

She said 'the children always came to him. Children would not have come to him if Jesus had a stone face all the time.' By that it could be inferred that Jesus must've laughed sometimes.

I saw an article yesterday, timed with the anniversary of VJ-Day, decrying our use of the atomic bombs against Japan. I find such to be shameful revisionism.
My father fought in WWII in Europe, where he landed in France shortly after D-Day, then fought across France and Germany. At the Battle of the Bulge he was awarded a Battlefield Commission, as the senior surviving NCO in his infantry company and that obligated him for the duration the war. After VE-Day he was given notice that orders were coming that would send him back to the states for a month of leave, after which he was to report to the Army camp near Solomon’s Island, Maryland for amphibious landing training. Before the orders were cut, the U.S. dropped the atomic bombs on Japan and the war swiftly ended. Dad, in a letter to my mother, expressed his relief at not having to fight the Japanese, who were known to fight ferociously to the last man, even for small islands that were not their homeland. In the letter he thanked God for giving us the scientists and the wherewithal to build the bombs. He, though not a Truman fan, thanked him for following through with using the bombs.
The revisionist critics claim Japan was on their knees, conveniently ignoring the fact that the fire bombings of major cities hadn’t ended the war. The critics also ignore the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, as the trigger of the Pacific war.
Atomic weapons are terrible instruments of war, that the world must avoid using. But, on behalf of all the sons and daughters of the brave men who were spared having to invade Japan, no apologies need be given. Just thanks.

I'd like to report that my Joss Whedon Shakespeare movie is in my DVD player.

That is huge! Huge! I'm definitely going to watch it now! Sitting on top of my TV for months and months. And now it's in the machine. Oh, we're so close. I'm sure I'll watch it this week. Or maybe next week. I almost never take movies out of my DVD player without at least trying to watch them.

I fell asleep watching the special features, which is not a good start. But it's in the machine! Very exciting.

My favorite version of Romeo and Juliet, which Kurosawa never did, is from Baz Luhrmann. I am not a fan of his work. I tried to watch Moulin Rouge! and I bailed early. A female filmmaker, I forget now who she was, told me it's a lot better the second time. I was like, "holy shit! I got to watch it twice?"

So you'd think Baz Luhrmann, whose work I avoid, and Shakespeare, who I have a love/hate relationship with, you'd think they would suck together. Well, you'd be wrong. Romeo + Juliet is fucking awesome.

And I mentioned this on another thread, I ought to mention it again. Maybe the best inspired-by-Shakespeare I have ever read is Nutshell by Ian McEwan. Hilarious. Awesome. Amazing. His best work (and I'm a huge fan of his work). It's the youngest Hamlet I've ever seen in my life. Hamlet as an unborn baby. And his mother is plotting to kill...

I don't want to ruin it. So good. I've been giving that book to all my friends for Christmas. Even liberals love that book.

So some fisherman are trying to fish and they aren't catching anything. Really irritating. Fishing all night and not a bite.

And some dude on the beach yells out some advice.

"Put your net on the other side of the boat!"

And they're like, "What? What?"

And the dude on the beach says, "Try putting your net on the other side of the boat. You will catch some fish."

And they put their net on the other side of the boat.

I wanted to talk about the Supreme Court a little bit.

Because I've been yelling at the Court for a couple of decades on the Althouse blog.

And I want to say, what they did in the Dobbs opinion, that was incredibly brave.

Firefighters are brave. Policemen are brave. Soldiers are brave. Supreme Court Justices are rarely brave. They're not in life or death situations. They're sitting on their ass all the time. It's a cushy job.

Now picture what happened this year. Somebody on the Supreme Court leaks the Dobbs opinion ahead of time.

To stop it.

All of a sudden, the Supreme Court is a scary place. Death threats. Lots of death threats. I can't prove this. I assume it. People are furious. The President is against them. The Congress is against them. A man tries to murder Brett Kavanaugh. Shows up at his house with guns and has a plan to murder him (and a few others). They have to have secret service protection.

If one of them changes their vote, they are all safe again. All you have to do is change your vote. Must have been tempting.

They do not change their votes.

Samuel Alito - Brave!
Clarence Thomas - Brave!
Brett Kavanaugh - Brave!
Amy Coney Barrett - Brave!
Neil Gorsuch - Brave!

Solid, fearless, awesome.

I read an interesting article about a week ago, about how the entire monetary system is about to fail. The premise is that the Fed cannot raise interest rates high enough to significantly slow inflation without using most or all of our tax revenue to pay the interest on our debt. I asked my more scholarly accountant attorney estate planning brother about this, and his view was much more bleak than that. He equated our current monetary situation to a Ponzi scheme. Not if, when. His advice was to invest in canned goods and ammunition. I guess doubling our IRS and arming them is one way to go here...

Readering: "Scott Adams nutty as a fruit cake."

Scott Adams has demonstrated his analysis and assessments and interpretations of events have been particularly accurate. Especially in deconstructing lefty/dem/nevertrump (but I repeat myself) hoaxes over the last 7 years.

This ability and insight and the wide promulgation of clearly correct recognition of reality frightens and alarms the New Soviet Democratical NPC foot soldiers like readering.

Hence readerings substance-free (it shall always be thus) throw-away line attack on Adams with nothing behind it.

So, Adam's is nutty eh?

Let me tell you some stories about race relations in the South, when I grew up.

When I was in fourth grade, we used to play football, "the blacks versus the whites." This was 1977 or so. I don't know if it was my idea or somebody else's idea. There was no hostility whatsoever, it was just an easy innocent child way of dividing up in teams. Like shirts and skins. So we played several games during recess of the blacks versus the whites. And then one day our teacher found out about it. (I guess he noticed!) And he made us stop dividing our teams that way.

I got in a fight with three black guys in 6th grade. I got my ass kicked. Because there were three of them. And I'm bawling and my buddy, another black guy, walks with me to the nurse or the principal's office or wherever the hell we went.

One time a black girl called me a "cracker" and I called her a "burnt marshmallow." (I was the king of the insults back then).

One time, this was in high school, I threw a stick in the woods. Threw it as far as I could. And I yelled out, "Spear-chucker!" Super loud. And my two friends were embarrassed and saying shit to me. And I was confused. And one said, "You don't say 'spear-chucker'." And I said, "Why not?" And he said, "Because it's a racial insult!" And I said, "It is?"

(His name is Spears, by the way, kind of ironic. One of my best friends in the world. We had a great friendship. And then one day, I must have been almost 30, we had a heated fight over abortion on the phone, and I lost a friend).

When I was in fifth grade, this little black girl kissed me on the lips in front of the whole class. And everybody was going, "oooooooohhhhhhh!" And I ran over to the sink and washed my mouth out. I don't know if that was racism or sexism or what that was. I wasn't ready for girls, or black girls, or either, or both.
