A sign that says "The right to openly discuss ideas must be defended" brings out the absolute worst in people.

"They" want a conversation, at least that is what they tell us. Complete BS.

Noted. Andy seems to be making bland statements implying he's against cancel culture without actually coming out strong against it. Was his name on the Harper's Letter? I didn't see it. Maybe i missed it.

I am surprised Sullivan didn't sign the Harper's letter.

Today's blog post? Shunning heretics is in. Free speech, open debate, tolerance for other views is out. https://bit.ly/32b3yam

Like we, the enlightened classic liberals, didn't know all along it was all about canceling freedom of speech.

This seems to be a variation on the "hood prank" video, where you pull some stupid shit on a ghetto B and then make a video of him huffing and puffing about what a dangerous motherfucker he is. People who are easily incited are funny, if they don't actually hurt you.

When do Nazis discover that they are the Nazis?

As far as I know, Sullivan may not have been asked to sign the Harper letter.

The brilliant "rebuttal" of his position: "Go away Nazi scum."

You know he's a Nazi because if any group defended freedom of speech, it was the National Socialists and their libertarian leader, Adolf Hitler. Inga Logic at its best.

For God's sake, why does this surprise anyone?

Both the Marxists and the post-Marxists never had any truck with "free speech", with they either called a "bourgeois value" or a "hegemonic discourse".

These people are not "nice". They are not "misunderstood", they are not "oppressed". These people will put us into gulags & kill us by the millions the first chance they get. Keep your powder dry!

According to Howard, the mob pushing this guy around are as courageous as the troops that hit the beach at Normandy.

According to Inga, the physical assault is Steve Bannons fault.

GingerBeer said...

Say what you will about the Nazis, but they really knew how to "cancel" dissent.

Social justice, diversity, redistributive change, Selective-Jew, and Cecile clinics, too. Far-right (or alt-right) in the left-right, totalitarian-anarchist nexus is leftist.

It's a small, innocuous sign held up in an inconspicuous corner by a mild looking man. What gets me is that these are the people who claim you don't need police You just need women like her to de-escalate charged situations.....No one in the crowd told this woman to calm down. This includes the bobbies that were in the crowd. Some of this was assault....I admire the guy's courage and forbearance. That was the only admirable thing on display. There won't always be an England.

This video is three years old -- from May 2017.

That doesn't make it irrelevant. To the contrary, it's important to realize that we've been building up to this for a long time. But it shouldn't be taken as a sign that the COVID-19/BLM insanity has made things significantly worse (even if it has).

steve uhr said...

A little context might help. What ideas did he want to discuss? Were the demonstrators wrong to assume that he held abhorrent views?

(This may get me cancelled but I think it's sexy when Black women speak with a British accent.)

The behavior on display makes more sense when you realize politics is a secular religion. Really internalize that - it will make your head hurt slightly less.

In religion there are generally two sides to everything - very little gray nuance. Saved vs. unsaved, chosen vs. infidel, heaven vs. hell, good vs. evil. You simply choose a side, turn off your brain, and react as trained and how your faith dictates you should. In this context, everyone is acting "logically".

Time to watch Showtime's "The Tudors" again; similar story with better looking people and amazing costumes.

I've met a lot of dumb people in my life, but every day lately I see someone dumber than them all. How do you even get dumb enough to call that man a Nazi and his sign "white supremacy". We need a new word for people this stupid. It looks like brain damage.

stevew said...

People suck, especially the people attacking the man.

Kudos to that fellow for maintaining his composure. Apparently the police agree and side with the attackers.

It didn't "bring out the worst in people" I brought out the worst people. These people cannot have any redeeming qualities that would balance out this behavior.

I don't see any problem with defunding THOSE police.

So, answering my own question, the lone man with the sign is identified as DC Miller. He was responding to a controversy over an art gallery named LD50, accused of being some sort of alt-right / NAZI front in 2017. DC Miller wrote a piece about the controversy on Medium.com.

The Medium piece also references a website for DC Miller to raise money for a defamation case he is pursuing.

Read the fucking sign. Dopey looking white guy holding a sign. What more context do you need?
Yeah. They were wrong.
Anything else you need answers for?

Those who would use force to suppress the PEACEFUL execution of the "free speech" rights which should be protected by our constitutions must be forcefully reminded that the "right to keep and bear arms" allows for the ultimate defense of other rights.

"steve uhr" - do you just type for the sake of throwing something out there or is your brain still capable of logical thought? The comment I had to LOL at "...that he held abhorrent views...". Isn't that what his sign is all about freedom of speech? Or are you willing to delegate regulation of speech to some supranational organization like those dick-less Silicon Valley bums Facebook, Google, Twitter, etc. Over 70 years ago “1984” a novel covering 'Loyalty to Big Brother is demanded' was published. In the novel the three Party slogans promoted by the Ministry of Truth were: “WAR IS PEACE,” “FREEDOM IS SLAVERY,” and “IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.”
The novel depicted a frightening future of forced conformity and intolerance and brutal punishment for those who would not obey. But even Orwell’s vision was not as crazy as today’s Democrat Party backing the frauds - BLM and ANTIFA movements. The picture of this man and his sign is being played out by thousands (maybe millions - H.K. for example) all over the World. What will you give "Steve Uhr" when they come for you and your family. My friend, they will come for you, don't ever doubt that fact. Read Robespierre in the French Revolution - great example.
