Police versus Occupy protesters in Oakland.

Lots of photos and video.
At around 9:30 p.m., there was a tense faceoff between protesters and police officers on Broadway at 14th Street. About 100 officers, some appearing to be sheriff’s deputies, stood behind a metal barricade in full riot gear and wearing gas masks, while on the other side people pressed against the barricade, waving peace signs and chanting slogans. A few protesters hurled objects — what looked like water bottles — at the police, while over a loud speaker, officers instructed people to disperse or risk “chemical agents.”
The street-level video looks very chaotic and dramatic. It's pure emotion. Hard for the police to look good from this perspective:

Joe - There is no reason for me to answer a question that is irrelevant to my initial posting of the primary points.

I'm not her to defend nor agree with the points of the study.

I merely posted them so you and others could work yourselves into a frenzy attacking anyone or anything with whom you disagree.

It appears to have worked.

SPImmortal - Once again: George W. Bush signed the bank bailout bill.

Are you still

There were two bank bailout bills, both OKed and one signed by Obama. You're trying so hard to stay on message, it's cute.

My problem is not with the study. My problem is with your cherry-picking the results to show the trend you were predetermined to show. It's a form of lying.

In your defense, you didn't personally cherry-pick those data points. To your shame, your passed them along unquestioningly and with utter indifference to the truth. Does it bother you at all to know just how much you are being used as a tool? To what degree you are being manipulated into lying by other people? If you had an ounce of dignity or self-respect, you wouldn't willingly choose to be a useful idiot.

Back on message, I see...

Bit of sarcasm. "Never trust the government, unless hippies are getting gassed and their skulls fractured". Then, all good meng. You and Sdaam Hussein have something in common when it comes to gassing it's own citizens.

No, I WITTINGLY give the police the authority to tear gas me if I forcibly occupy a public space for weeks against posted and verbal warnings while I use and sell drugs, beat other protesters, block emergency vehicles, crap on the lawn, and throw bottles at the cops when they show up.

So you can assure me the Iraqi vet, and Wisconsin native, that's in critical condition with a cracked skull, is guilty of the things you cited? Really?

Love, that is a total fucking cop-out. How unscrupulous! You can't introduce copy-and-pasted studies to prove your point, then say any corrections to the absurd study should be directed to Max Baucus. You introduced the evidence; you should have to defend it!

But you can't because that ridiculous study is indefensible.

My question is this: Why doesn't someone possibly dying at a protest rally bother you?

You and Roger and others think it's somehow funny or deserving for some kid who just served in Iraq to die over this?

You're both pricks.

That wasn't a protest. That was a mob that had already been dispersed for many violations of the law. They came back at night specifically to confront the police with violence like they had earlier in the day.

I didn't muster any kind of argument for or against the study. I just posted it for review.

I certainly am not in favor of what the big banks or Wall Street has done to the economy, and I've made that clear, but I'm not going to tear it apart, piece by piece to defend it or support.

Like I said before: Send them a letter if you want an argument.

Because I haven’t a clue if this person “deserved” what happened to them? Are you saying that IF he was raping a womon, after having killed and eaten a baby and the police intervened it would be a priori a bad thing, just because it happened at a protest rally?

And no you cited the study to “prove” that income inequality has grown, but now you’re backing off, because you are having your @$$ handed to you on procedural grounds….

I am praying for the Iraq vet. It is sad and tragic what happened. But this should be a lesson for those defending the Occupy movement: A mob or occupation is not more than the sum of its parts. "The Occupation" didn't attempt to re-occupy a plaza that had been cleared by police; the occupiers did. Police response does not affect "The Occupation," as though it's some amorphous blob hovering in mid-air; it affects individual people.

The occupiers decided to re-occupy the plaza and then bombard the police with projectiles, paint cans, and chemicals. The police responded, and by pure chance that response landed on the Iraq vet's face.

I hope in future that the Occupy movement realizes that it's "horizontal order" scheme is just mob rule in slow motion. They can't control it enough to decide how much to spend on toilet paper, and they can't control it enough to keep an Iraq vet from landing in intensive car.

Ha! Give me a fucking break. The study makes a point about income distribution in this country and how it's allegedly benefiting the top 1% at the expense of the bottom 20%. You posted it to make that point. You even spent a lot of time defending its point--and your point--from other commenters. And now you realize the study is total bullshit and you're backtracking.

Who posts comments without making a point? Any recipes you want to post while you're at it? Maybe clip some articles from Wikipedia on Colombian tree frogs? So long as you're in the spirit of non-sequitur, in which Senate studies that are, by your admission, incongruous to the discussion can be thrown in at random, why not?

Anytime you have protests going on this long with folks camping out for long periods of time in the middle of a city you will attract some criminal elements. At the very least you may get some casual drug users. Afterall, most homeless people reside in the middle of the city and some of them may use drugs.

However, you cannot lump in everyone together and it does not delegitamize the message of the protesters. Most of whom are not petty criminals, drug dealers, etc.

The same can be said for any protest of any political position. Republicans and tea party and militia members are often aligned but that does not mean everyone who shows up a tea party protest is a member of a militia.

Common sense.

He did not get a chance to talk to his friend. "They are waiting for a neurosurgeon to examine him to see if he needs surgery or not," Shannon said. If he doesn't need an operation, he'll be moved to the intensive care unit.

"He doesn't agree with the way the banks aren't regulated, the way they drove the economy in the ground. He wants there to be regulation of the banks," Shannon said.

----------------

scoreboard:

Tea Party -
rapes 0
assaults on police 0
assaults on passerby 0
arrests maybe handful

OWS -
rapes multiple rape apologist memos 1
assaults on police many
assaults on passerby many
arrests a shitload

Yeah great group that OWS

Even if he is a 'real vet'....so what? Does that somehow make him a more special snowflake in the rioting and breaking of the laws?

He put himself in a situation where he could be harmed. Purposely put himself there as opposed to being deployed by the military. A military that he VOLUNTEERED to join; by the way.

If he was a 'real vet' you would think that he would have some sense of what is dangerous and take responsibility for his own actions.

Am I glad he was hurt. Of course not. However, if you want to play at revolutionary, you need to take the consequences of your own actions.

Yes, but just because the NYT has been fooled in the past does not mean that they are fooled every single time. One could easily point out the number of times every media outlet has been wrong. That doesn't mean you throw out all media reporting. If you did then you would be living in the world of conspiracy theories because in your mind nothing would ever be considered true or factual. As to Oakland it is unfortunate the cops didnt let the occupiers consume themselves. It is impossible, of course, to have a corollary event with the teaparty since they would have a permit and would beat it when agreed and leave the place cleaner than when they got there.

Military service is public record and is readily available to anyone wanting to file a FOIA request. Each branch also offers a contact number and mailing address for those wanting to verify someone's claims of service.

If this had been a typical, dirty, unattractive, smelly, slothful, unkempt loser protester who got slammed in the face with a beanbag, nobody would give two shits. That's why protests spin out of control at night in Oakland and the OPD steps in quickly at night before fire bombing and random storefront trashing begins.

It's unfortunate, but it's a fact of life in Oakland and has little to nothing to do with #OWS or whatever cause protesters are espousing. Once the protestors occupied the square at night it was only a matter of time until all hell broke loose.

This reminds me. Have you noticed how heavily the Wikipedia page on Community Reinvestment Act is edited since home financing collapsed? You can read the history of edits but most of them don't make sense to an outsider. It reads as a completely different article. I noticed right off in the introduction something I do not recall from before, a mention of "redlining" with a link to another Wikipedia page. It was actually a usefully informative page. At length by the end of it, the CRI is exonerated.

Some economists, politicians and other commentators have charged that the CRA contributed in part to the 2008 financial crisis by encouraging banks to make unsafe loans. However, every empirical study that has looked at CRA loans has concluded that they were safer than subprime mortgages that were purely profit driven, and CRA loans accounted for a tiny fraction of total subprime mortgages.

The section goes on, completely different than before.

My favorite part is where all the banks together suddenly started making high-risk low-interest loans without collateral because everybody knows that banks, the last bastion of cautious conservatism, willingly took on unreasonable risk then nefariously repackaged it without any coercive interference from government or any regulation whatsoever.

I mean, he's a sainted Iraq War vet only because he was injured at an OWS rally - if this had happened at a TP, they'd be on about how the military inculcates nazism in its ranks.

Could you link it all one more time. I still don't know (or care) what you're talking about.

I just did, Einstein. Click on the blue letters that say "Link".

Actually just skip it. I'm more interested in all the confirmed stories of people "posing" as vets. I'll wait for you.

Micah Wright, leftist activist and fake Army Ranger:

Jesse MacBeth, antiwar protestor:

Start with those two and then google stolen valor if you need more.

Where is the video of the water cannons, the police dogs chew arms and legs and the police busting skulls with their batons? We want our money's worth of entertainment. I see a 49 out of 57 state landslide! Yipee!

More fun from the human turds at OWS:

-------------

Three young punks threatened to kill a 24-year-old Occupy Wall Street protester for pressing charges over an assault at the group's Zuccotti Park encampment, police said.
"You got our friend arrested. We're gonna kill you! Watch your back!" the trio warned the young woman on Monday - two days after her complaint led to the arrest of Garfield Leslie, police said Tuesday.

Leslie, 19, of Brooklyn, had offered to sell the woman drugs at the downtown sit-in, police said.

When she declined that offer and his romantic advances, he punched her in the face and then dished out more blows to a friend who had come to her defense, police said.

After clocking the friend, police said, Leslie then punched the man's girlfriend for good measure.

Because some here have a warped view of the world they would rather not believe that anyone from the military except a criminal would be part of OWS. But they forget that soldiers who fight and die do so for all Americans not just right wing conservative Americans.

Wait... if he died defending Americans, how'd he end up at the Occupy Wall Street protest? Is this like a Weekend at Bernie's thing or what?

that's one way to get veterans to attend your stinking hippie protest

Big Mike said...

He certainly could be a veteran, and some small amount of crowd-sourced investigatory reporting will determine that quickly enough.

But there's a reason for skepticism which goes way beyond the notion of a marine at #OWS -- marines are trained to understand the need for field sanitation, and any combat experience in Afghanistan or Iraq would have reinforced that understanding. From everything I can discover, a real marine -- and we're talking ordinary combat veteran here, not necessarily someone who's totally strack -- would not have tolerated spending time in such squalid conditions.

So I'm skeptical. But the truth will come out, one way or another. Speculation at this point is only just that.

Big Mike said...

Oh, and did no one teach these 60's - era protester wannabes that dissing cops is a good way to get hurt? It is not in the interests of police officers to encourage anyone to think that their directives ought to be ignored.

Did the Oakland police use more force than necessary? I wasn't there, so have no basis to judge.

Same goes for the rest of you.

Veterans for Peace virtually guaranteed to get laid in Berkley. Not sure about Oakland which, like Madison, is a police state fascist repressive hegemony in the business of supressing free speech and, of course, busting unions.

@"J", you should definitely think about it before typing something that could be construed as a threat. For one thing, if "cubanbob" does get jumped by person or persons unknown, you've just become a suspect. And, trust me on this, there are ways to get your IP.

Also, you might consider that some of us really have fought for our lives before, and while none of us are eager to repeat the exercise, neither does the notion of defending ourselves physically strike terror in our hearts.

Yah, he/her is a raging little fascist [and racist] regular troll here. His/her post about crushing hippies was like gang sign language, announcing to other regs that he/her is "one of them".

Matt "Is his mother lying about his military service? Surely none of you have an issue with mothers from Wisconsin?"

I'm afraid Fen, Roger, Alex, SPImmortal, Sofa and of course, Bunny...have a real problem believing anything that isn't sitting in their living room or that they heard from Limbaugh, Beck or others of that ilk.

Instead of discussing, debating or arguing about the merits of the protests, they would rather denigrate a soldier who fought for their right to post such garbage, and the others who are exercising their 1st Amendment rights.

Fen is convinced the man is lying, Roger thinks it's cute to say that he hopes the projectile that hit him is okay, Bunny throws Charles Manson into the potential protester mix (say what?), and the rest of them just plain hate anything and anybody who disagrees.

Once again: It's embarrassing.

I find it interesting that much that is being posted here today, by the rabid anti-protester group, is almost identical to what was said about the Vietnam protesters.

And we ALL know who was proven to be right about that fiasco.

Why so many here side with the big banks and Wall Street is strange indeed.

So I'm skeptical.

You're skeptical of the Mother who confirmed her son was a Marine? Who did two tours. What the fuck is wrong with you people?

Michael said...

Love. You are aware, are you not, that the city of Oakland, its administration and its police force are liberal(s)? Why would lefty cops shoot a Marine in the face with a beanbag, thaT is the question that ought to be asked. Why would the Democrat mayor of Atlanta act like Bull Conner and arrest the peaceful drummers? Why are lefties against the peaceful drummers?

Synova said...

They maced protestors at UNM... last night? The police removed them because their permit said day hours and no drugs or alcohol. One lady died (killed herself) of alcohol poisoning and I heard someone got stabbed and also that they arrested 60 prostitutes across the street at McDonalds.

Some of that might be hear-say.

Oh, and (this is only second hand) the campus paper tried to interview them about their cause but the interview was refused because it was time for a bongo-drum and incense circle.

No burned cars though.

But the university president won't give them a new permit and the police arrested a whole bunch of people and it "looks bad"...

... and you have to wonder if that isn't the point. Behave badly enough that the State cracks down on you so that the State looks bad. For what it's worth, though, of a class of 30ish, only two people were willing to say that they should be given a permit again or that the arrests were wrong. I think that most everyone couldn't figure out what was so difficult about following a few simple rules.

Also the "Don't club baby seals" sign got a lot of scorn. Hard to take anyone seriously when they won't give an interview to get their message out because bongo drums take priority and can't keep the message focused.
