"Students got into our face and ... yelled out, ‘Ann Arbor is a whore, you bitches’ (an insult that I frankly don’t even understand)."

That's one of the many complaints Michigan fans had about the way they were treated here in Madison the day the Badgers thrillingly snatched victory from the jaws of the Wolverine.
“Michigan on the 24th was I think head and shoulders probably the worst [game] in recent years in terms of feedback from visitors,” University of Wisconsin spokesperson John Lucas said.

Selected feedback, in the form of five previously private e-mails to UW administrators, was made public at a press conference Wednesday as the university seemingly attempted to come clean about alcohol abuse within its student body.

“I have attended games at nearly every Big Ten stadium and can categorically state that Madison is the worst,” Michigan fan Mark Jacob Thomas, who reported having hot cocoa and bratwursts thrown at him at past Badger games, said in an e-mail to UW Chancellor John Wiley. “Iowa fans are nuts and Ohio State fans are hostile, but at Wisconsin, the students are drunk beyond comprehension and incredibly abusive verbally and physically."

I'm sure the disappointment of losing so dramatically had nothing to do with the motivation to email in a complaint about the Badger fans.

It amazes me that U of M students can complain about someone drinking too much.

Also, we're pretty familiar with losing this season so I don't think it's that.

Who is Ann Arbor? What evidence do they have that she is a whore?

Sounds like defamation to me.

I lived for over 20 years in the Detroit area.

Did you know that the University of Michigan has never lost a fairly-refereed football or basketball game in its entire history? If you ever lived in the Detroit area, you'd have known that.

Did you know that, alone of all colleges in the United States, Michigan is the target of a deliberate animus that results in it always getting ranked lower than it deserves, even counting referee-caused losses as if they were genuine? If you ever lived in the Detroit area, you'd have known that.

Living in Champaign and hundreds of miles away from Madison, I can likewise verify that Ann Arbor is, in fact, a whore.

At least that's what word on the street is. Shhhh.

At South Bend for the Southern Cal/Notre Dame game this year, there were t-shirts bearing O.J.'s picture with the caption:
"Notre Dame 7 Heismans 0 Murderers."

Q: What college or university has won the most games in the history of college football?
2nd Q: What college or university has the highest winning percentage for football games?
A: University of Michigan.

According to Wikipedia and other sources, Michigan taught Notre Dame how to play football.

According to Wikipedia, brylin is a Michigan troll. And don't get me started on their corrupt basketball program.

I've been to about 10 different Division 1 College Football stadiums. Wisconsin's student section had the lamest chant I've heard--"Eat S***, F*** You". This went on for a pretty long time. It didn't seem to be necessarily directed at the game or the opposing team. I also could hear this chanted in the background on an ESPN game broadcast from Madison about 2 years ago.

Forget about football -- what kind of academic standards are consistent with an inability to understand that insult?

In highschool, when I was a senior (a few years ago), we were rated the worst fans in the state of Michigan. I went to a Christian private school.. apparantly chanting to the local public school "Its alright, its ok, you'll all work for us someday" is considered arrogant when we're losing the ball game.

My favorite (by that, I mean most creative) involved something called the MEAP. MEAP stands for Michigan educational assessment program or something like that. Simply, a standarized test that the state gives to award scholarships. As the local public school destroyed us in basketball and chanted "scoreboard scoreboard", we yelled "Meap scores, Meap scores." The previous years they had dressed up as Jesus so we owed them one.

Unfortunately, the reported taunting probably actually happened. Being a student section season ticket-holder, I can vouch for the fact that there are more than three (or even four) drunken idiots in the crowd at any given football game. Indeed, the student section is given to profane chants and full of people wearing profane T-shirts (shirts that said "Ann Arbor is a whore" were everywhere during the Michigan game.) When an enemy sympathizer is discovered in the student section, fans surrounding that person point and chant "a*$hole" repeatedly for thirty seconds or so until they get bored with it (although luckily the "a*$hole" I was sitting with did not have anything thrown at him.) Do I think Wisconsin is worse than most schools when it comes to these things? I have no idea. Should we nevertheless behave better during games toward our opponents' fans? Absolutely. We beat Michigan this year in a great and exciting game. It is really too bad that the accompishment has to be marred by behavior that is so outside what we should expect from otherwise smart and conscientious individuals. I mean, Wisconsin is supposed to be a liberal school. What kind of liberal acts like this? The kind of liberal who after 18 years is out from under his parents' thumb? That's contemptalbe.

t-rex asked:What kind of liberal acts like this?

answer: The drunken, hooligan kind.

Re "Wisconsin's student section had the lamest chant I've heard--"Eat S***, F*** You""

My college cheer was

E to the X dee y dee X
E to the X dee X
Secant tangent cosine sine
Three point one four one five nine
Pi - I - Cube root of Three
Fightem Fightem I I T

Obviously the level of education in the basic sciences has fallen badly in the 40 years since I attended.

Man, that's lame.

One thing I have noticed since I moved to the South is that the football cheers are far more poetic down here, and contain a fin de siecle whimsy totally absent from big-time Yanqui cheers.

Exempli gratii:

"Hotty toddy Gosh almighty who the hell are we?
Flim flam, bim bam, Ole Miss, by damn!"

and

"Rammer Jammer Yellowhammer
Go to Hell, Alabama!"

and my personal favorite:

"Go to Hell, LSU!" (which the Ole Miss student section would yell out at every home game, regardless of who we were playing)

Good times.

Another thing, is that no one down here knows the ref-cussing cheers that are a standard of Big Least college ball that I learned in the Georgetown band. In fact, I get told to shut up when I yell the following:

"The ref beats his wife!"

or

"I'm blind, I'm deaf, I wanna be a ref!"

HaloJonesFan said...

Michigan has zero right to complain, following last week's pitiful display of whingeing by their coach at the end of the PSU game. But hey, he whined the refs into giving him two seconds back, and combined with some awfully convenient clock operation, Michigan managed to get five downs from first-and-goal. (And, by the way, it did take all five.)

Congrats, Mich! You're a whiney little bitch!

I wouldn't really call that a cheer. We say it back and forth between different student sections. It's usually the people in section "O" saying Eat S*** and the people in Section "N" or "P" replying with F*** You. It's not directed at the other team. There are tons of other chants and things directed from one section to another. They're fun.

Michigan fans ARE odd. They think winning every year is some kind of birthright -- UM hasn't had a losing season for almost 40 YEARS (1967 was the last one, I believe). A lot of Michigan fans weren't even born the last time it happened.

And so, no, they're generally not nasty to visiting fans--the only team they play consistently that really worries them is the Buckeyes and they're not even that nasty to Buckeye fans because that would be perceived as, well, sinking to OSU levels. And they're generally not even particularly loud at Michigan Stadium because, of couse, Michigan is expected to win.

It is taken as an unfortunate fact of life that every once in a while Michigan will lose to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and a bit more often to Michigan State--these things do happen, and it's frustrating but isn't taken to mean much.

So, yes, Michigan fans are well-behaved out of a mixture of complacency and arrogance and so tend to be surprised by abuse elsewhere.

I went to Madison during the 2002 National Championship year. I have to say that of all the Big Ten venues that I've been to, the game atmosphere for an opposing fan in Madison has been the worst to date. A drunk fan went on all game about the player who's number was on my jersey. Another kid attempted to trip me by grabbing my ankle while I was returning to my seat. Another drunk fell over and did a face-plant as he was attempting to rush me and a group of visiting fans after exiting the stadium. I'm interested to see what Ann Arbor is like on Nov 19.

As to how Ann Arbor handles her social life, I cannot really say. All I can do is go with what I've heard from reliable sources which have stated that Ann Arbor is in fact a whore. Go Bucks, Michigan sucks.

Section O at Camp Randall is in the student section. This chant begins with the students holding their arms over their head as to make an O over their head. They sing the beginning of Swingtown by Steve Miller. At one point everyone not in section O points to section O and says "SUCKS". Everyone in section O points to the left and says "F*CK YOU". Everyone else replies "EAT SH!T then arms go back over the head and they resume Swingtown.

referring to the comment Iowa fans are "Nuts and Ohio State fans are "Hostile": I hope you are not implying that Michigan fans are far more superior than fans from other schools. I believe that all schools have their fair share of misbehaving fans. I actually had a michigan fan spit on me at a tailgating party in columbus one year. Yes, He was drunk and disorderly and was later arrested and placed in jail. Just be careful when pointing fingers because when you do you will always have 3 pointing back at you. GO BUCKS!!!!
