First impression was Miami Vice, Ikea early 90s color. I bought those vertical blinds in that exact color for my first apartment, to divide my bedroom and the living.

I wonder what the phone call from Harris's people to George W went like to beg him not to endorse her. SNL material, to be sure, if SNL still cared about comedy.

FRANKFURT - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for a renewed effort to bring peace to Ukraine, adding that he and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had both agreed in recent talks on the need for a new peace conference that would include Russia. "I believe that now is the time to discuss how to arrive at peace from this state of war, indeed at a faster pace," Scholz told broadcaster ZDF in a televised interview. Scholz is under pressure at home after all three parties in his centre-left coalition suffered painful losses in two regional state elections one week ago, while groups

Imagine that. Kiev's bid to turn all of the Russian territory that fell in its lap at the fall of the USSR, combined with the Polish territory it got during WWII in the Hitler-Stalin pact, into one huge Ukrainian ethno-state bt force, using NATO and US weapons seems to be falling apart.

I have been pondering my feelings of despair. I am 70; my life is winding down, I have accomplished little or nothing, and the world I must leave to my children is wreathed about with portents of disaster. Even, of things worse than disaster. Of course, age sees decay where youth sees opportunity. Perhaps I merely see the world as those fortunate enough to become old men have always seen it. Yet I wonder if another factor is at work.

The world before Gutenburg was a world with limited sources of information, and, therefore, a world of substantial certainties. The lines dividing beliefs were the lines along which wars were fought. Then. quite suddenly, by the standards of the time, a new technology of information transfer fractured these blocks of belief into fragments. What had been a world with a few limited and opposed certainties became a stew of competing surmises.

We have just undergone an even more radical form of this transformation, involving a vastly more powerful and accessible information transfer technology. Perhaps it is inevitable that the sudden death of so many certainties leads to a psychic tumult which drives an old man toward despair. Yet we now recognize the advent of the printing press as a gigantic step forward, the occasion of a more perfect understanding of the world, if not a more perfect world. Certainly, it was the instrument of a more vigorous and inclusive debate about the nature of that "perfection".

Things do fall apart, and it may well be, that the center cannot hold.
But is it mere anarchy, that is loosed upon the World?

No. It's just visible and more definable by a whole bunch more people now, thanks to the information age and internet access. Some things have changed; Human behavior has not.

Saw a Kamala ad on tv. She says billionaires (nothing about millionaires, which seems... odd, why should they be excused?) need to pay their fair share. Pity she never says what that share is.

Something I read elsewhere some time ago, when it comes to that "fair share" bullshit- try asking whoever is making the demand just what that share is, with the provision that once they identify what they're demanding, they can never, ever demand more. The claim was that you'll almost certainly not get a response.

As a test of that theory, here's a question for the progressive left: What percentage of one's income does the government have first dibs on, with the understanding that that percentage can never be increased?

'tim in vermont' just can't stop repeating historical falsehoods. The division of Poland in the Hitler-Stalin pact did not set the post-war border of Poland and the USSR, though both lines were much further west than the prewar border. The city of Bialystok, for instance, was annexed by the USSR in 1939 but returned to Poland in 1945. And Ukraine had no control whatsoever over either division: Stalin was in charge of both.

Of course, Ukraine is not in any sense an 'ethno-state'. Look up Zhan Beleniuk, who won silver, gold, and bronze medals (in that order) in the last three Olympics in Greco-Roman wrestling. He's black, half-Rwandan, and a member of the Ukrainian parliament. Ukrainians laugh when people like 'tim' call them Nazis. They have a few, as does every country of any size, including the US, but even people like Marine La Pen or the German AfD have never been elected to parliament there.

So far from Ukraine including "Russian territory", it's Russia that includes a lot of ethnically Ukrainian territory. A lot of the old ladies in Kursk oblast are glad to be able to speak Ukrainian to the soldiers. There are also huge numbers of ethnic Ukrainians in Belgorod and Krasnodar oblasts, but Ukraine is not trying to annex them, just to restore the internationally-agreed border which Russia has more than once signed its agreement to. All of the oblasts voted to join Ukraine in 1991, the Donbass by an overwhelming margin (83%). Russia has no legitimate claim to any of the land it currently occupies.

effinayright said...

Tell us, Timofei, exactly WHAT Russian territory fell into Ukraine's lap when your beloved USSR gulag archipelago collapsed? Or do you argue that every fucking bit of it belonged to the Russkis as of 1783? NEVER MIND Nikita giving the Crimea back to Ukraine's control?

Trump War Room

@TrumpWarRoom
From December 22-January 15, 2019, America had the longest government shutdown in our country's history because President Trump asked for $5.7B to finish the wall.

Kamala Harris and Joe Biden's border catastrophe is now costing our country $150.7B PER YEAR.

Dems shut down the government over a $5.7B request by Trump to build a wall to secure our border, but passed a $369B “Inflation Reduction Act” that Joe just admitted was only about giving money to climate change.

Here’s what JD said according to Fox News…

"I don’t like that this is a fact of life," Vance said. "But if you are a psycho and you want to make headlines, you realize that our schools are soft targets. And we have got to bolster security at our schools. We’ve got to bolster security, so if a psycho wants to walk through the front door and kill a bunch of children, they’re not able."

No need to watch The Donald do the Gish Gallop on Tuesday, wherein he will let loose with a torrent of incorrect, irrelevant, or idiotic arguments. The Atlantic presents this example from the first televised presidential debate of the 2020 election campaign. Fox News host Chris Wallace invited Trump to deliver a two-minute statement, to the Galloper's delight. And he was off:

"So when I listen to Joe [Biden] talking about a transition, there has been no transition from when I won. I won that election. And if you look at crooked Hillary Clinton, if you look at all of the different people, there was no transition, because they came after me trying to do a coup. They came after me spying on my campaign … We’ve got it all on tape. We’ve caught ’em all. And by the way, you gave the idea for the Logan Act against General Flynn. You better take a look at that, because we caught you in a sense, and President Obama was sitting in the office. He knew about it, too. So don’t tell me about a free transition. As far as the ballots are concerned, it’s a disaster. A solicited ballot, okay, solicited, is okay. You’re soliciting. You’re asking. They send it back. You send it back. I did that. If you have an unsolicited—they’re sending millions of ballots all over the country. There’s fraud. They found ’em in creeks …" and on and on.

It is impossible to counter every misstatement and misadventure by Galloping Don in the time allotted, so Kamala needs to pick Trump's most idiotic statement in each new gallop offered up based upon the CBS host's question by making fun of it, following up by reminding the audience that Don continues to gallop. This counter-technique isn't difficult because Donald always tells the same lies and off-the-wall stories all run together. In other words, shut down the bullshit and Trump isn't smart enough to know how to debate issues straight up.

Humperdink said...
