I've just been enjoying the marvelous stretch of weather Madison has been having. Warm days, cool nights. Perfect. I guess the heat comes back now, but it cannot last long at this time of year. I'm not sure how this weather has affected fungus growth, but it's been dry (ish) so that should slow things down a little.

Something just hit me from the title of the last post that I wasn't aware of: Beyoncé has won 32 Grammys?? To me, winning that many Grammy awards means that either there is not enough competition, or the favoritism is stacked against the competition. I suspect the latter.

Rasmussen said just now:

'If the 2024 election were between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, who would you vote for?"

Independents Only-
Trump: 51% (+11)
Harris: 40%
Someone Else: 5%
Not Sure: 4%

Last week this was Trump +9...

That caught my eye too. WTF!

Not so in Texas, I'm afraid. August and September are typically the hottest months of the year, and it's not until the latter part of September that the Gulf gets warm enough to start generating tropical cyclone-associated rain relief. You just adjust by getting your outside chores done early - or late, avoiding the heat as far as possible.

speaking of fungus..
It's Weird... When they weighted the democrats being polled much more heavily than the independents and republicans.. Harris was the Clear Winner..

But NOW! for some reason, they are not counting dem votes AS heavily, and Kamela's lead is vanishing? I don't understand? Aren't they counting fraudulent and manufactured votes any more? (or not as much?)

gilbar said...

that was what? a win every year, since 1992? how LONG are her teeth?
Or, do they just give her 5 a year?

gilbar said...

what did you think she'd condemn? the poor aim? that wouldn't be very classy

Howard said...

What did they say back in the day about mushrooms? Kept in the dark and fat bullcrap.

Leland said...

I don't expect them to condemn the violence against their opponent. However, I have no doubt that if the parties were reversed, every journalist would be yelling at Trump to condemn the deadly violence of his supporters. So, I'm glad people keep noticing that Democrats don't care.

Original Mike said...

"Everyone is noticing that Kamala did not condemn the attempted Assassination of her political opponent."

That would outrage her supporters.

Inga said...

Why would Harris speak of the assassination attempt? It was a Republican who did it. Why hasn’t Trump questioned why a fellow Republican would try to kill him? Does Trump have enemies in his own camp?

Inga said...

Kamala is still ahead in the polls. If you go by Rasmussen alone you’re simple.

Yep, with that many I don't want to hear any bitching from Jay-Z if she doesn't win something. (Which I'm expecting since she put out her "country" album this year and he'll shoot his mouth off when if she doesn't win a CMA.)

“Rasmussen's poll is an outlier among recent national polling with Harris reported to have a 51% to 48% edge over Trump in the latest CBS News/YouGov poll released on Sunday (August 18). Harris was also reported to have a 50% to 46% lead over Trump in the first Emerson College Polling national survey conducted since President Joe Biden's decision not to seek re-election, with 5% of voters claiming to be undecided.

The vice president also had a reported 52% to 48% advantage with undecided voters' support allocated, as well as a 48% to 44% edge with third-party candidates on the ballot, including Kennedy at 4%, according to the most recent Emerson College Polling national survey.”

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Mine references INDEPENDENTS only, and Rasmussen was the most accurate pollster in 2016, another year when your favorite pollsters said Trump was 99% sure to lose. The point being Rasmussen is the only major poll right now that has adjusted to reflect results since 2020, where your poll oversamples Democrats by about 18%. Just laying it now so I can say I told you so later. Just like I did in 2016. (We all knew the fix was in during 2020.)

The cover of the current ish of The New Yorker shows a roller coaster. A car with Trump and Vance is on the way down, while that with Harris and Walz is on the way up. Except the way roller coasters work, the long ride up is followed by a very quick ride down. Just saying.

Notice Inga reaches WAY back to Sunday for a favorable result? Three overnight polls yesterday: 2 show Trump leading (Rasmussen by 3, HarrisX by 2) and 1 shows Harris leading (the Democrat [partisan pollster] Data for Progress Poll by 3). The RCP average shows Harris +1.5 over Trump with only the latest Rasmussen (in the RCP average) being after the DNC started. Her bump is over.

Inga said...

It’s well known that Rasmussen leans right, so it’s best to keep this in mind when considering their polls to be accurate.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Independents are the battleground. I'll take +11 with independent voters. It's going to grow. Kamala has never won a nationwide vote, and no office outside California. Even her wins there were squeakers. In Kalifornia.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Accuracy leans right. It just seems exaggerated when you lean left.

Maynard said...

Whose dumber Kamala or this idiot?

That is an interesting question.

Inga is a true believer in The Party. She knows what The Party tells her to think. That she was able to function as a nurse means that she was able to memorize information and take direction from MDs. She is incapable of independent thinking.

Kamala comes from fairly bright parents and grew up dumb and privileged. She thinks that intelligence is her birthright. That is why she often sounds like she is talking to first graders. She gets caught up in word salads when she tries to speak to a more sophisticated audience.

Bottom line. As much as I hate to admit it, I suspect that Kamala is dumber than Inga.

Friendly reminder that RCP average had Clinton +3.2 over Trump in 2016. Kamala can't even get one week where her average is almost 4 over Trump.

I've always thought of the Democrats as the stupid party, and I still do, but sometimes I think they carefully anticipated and planned what eventually unfolded this summer.

Here's my take. The Dems in power knew since at least last spring, probably much sooner, that there was no way that Biden could beat Trump, according to their internal polling. Biden would not step down of his own accord, so they convinced Biden to set up an early debate with Trump on June 27, knowing full well that Biden would go down in flames, which is exactly what happened. Then, instead of pushing Biden aside which they knew they had to do, they patiently waited until AFTER the Republican National Convention July 15 to 18. Then, 3 days after the Republican Convention, on July 21, Biden drops out (is forced out), and Harris is installed shortly thereafter. The result, which I think was intended all along, was that the entire 4 day Republican Convention would be an attack on Biden, who the Dems already knew would not be their nominee. 4 days worth hundreds of millions of dollars of free advertising for Trump and the Republicans was wasted attacking Biden, who was never going to be the Dem's candidate anyway. Then the Dems have their convention nominating Harris with 4 days worth hundreds of millions of dollars attacking Trump, who then never gets to respond with 4 days of free national media coverage attacking Harris.

Maybe this was all luck and coincidence, but part of me thinks it was a very well planned and successful strategic play.

Doesn't there tend to be a difference independent voters, and non-partisan voters or uncommitted, or unaffiliated, or whatever synonym is used to mean neither Republican or Democrat voters? I kind of recall from many years ago that depending on how they describe themself they tend to vote for one party over the other.

The mushroom looks like some form of Boletus. I like to dry them, which makes them great for soups and stews. After washing, slice 1/3" and dehydrate. This is a good time to make sure they don't have maggots in them. The smaller they are, the less likely you found them before the flies.

I wouldn't call it a Boletus just yet. It looks spongy on the stem, but we really can't see the gill structure. It is awfully thin-bodied for a porcini/cepe/steinpilz boletus, but I haven't seem them all. There are some very bad-tasting Boletuses, and some can make you nauseous.
Get the Audubon mushroom field guide. It is a great reference. Althouse Portal beckons

A. muscaria has become extremely valuable recently. A lot of “natural medicine” types are using weak doses of it as a mild sedative. Unlike psilocybin-containing species, it is legal everywhere. Dried caps go for $50/lb at wholesale and much more at retail.
