"And drove down to Newark, Delaware where my dad worked at an automobile agency. And I walked in and I had my spikes."

"And because the reason I was going down, when your dad works at an automobile agency, the great advantage you get a new car to go to the prom or a good used car.  You think I’m joking. I’m not joking. And so I went down to my 51 Plymouth with beach towels for seat covers. And I had my uniform on, my spikes off. I ran in and the woman’s name was Mary, who ran the place. I said, 'Mary, where’s dad?' She said, 'He’s out in the lane going into the repair shop.' I’ll give you my word, true story. And my dad was a well dressed, refined fella. And I walked out and my dad was pacing back and forth between the big garage door, going into the repair shop and the door going out of the showroom. And I looked up, he said, 'Oh, Joey. Honey, I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.' I thought God, something happened. This is before cell phones. So I thought something happened to one of my brothers or my sister or my mom or something. I said, 'What’s the matter, dad?' He said... 'I went to Charlie and asked to borrow the money.' He said, 'He won’t lend it to me.' He said, 'I’m so ashamed. I’m so damn ashamed.'"

Said President Biden, quoted in "President Biden on Student Loan Forgiveness Transcript" (REV).

You left out the part about Joe getting into "one of the little ivies." Does anybody believe that? I think he just meant a private college somewhere out of state.

The anecdote rouses and plays on our fully justified and evidence-based feeling that college is too expensive, and conceals the fact that Biden's plan does nothing to control or contain or lessen the cost. I don't know if that was Joe's conscious intent, though. He just likes to talk about the old days, whether what he says actually happened or not. Short-term memory goes first. Stuff about the old days lingers a while.

Biden is 80 years old. He was a Senator/VP for 50 years. He's been a well-to-do man with a beach house for 50 years. He went to Elite college and law school, then spent a few years as a low level pol before becoming a US senator.

His family was well-to-do, except for a brief time. Yet Biden constantly talks about the 50s and 60s like it happened yesterday. And he was somehow poor and downtrodden.

He has trouble separating reality from fact. In the past, he's claimed to have: "marched with MLK", been the first in his family to go to College, been poor, graduated in the top 10 percent of his law school class, and been offered a NFL scholarship! All these are untrue.

What the heck are "spikes"? Was he wearing high heels? A mohawk? I went through ROTC, but it was in the US, not the Kaiser's military.

And he’d always say, “Joey, you’re going to be a college man.” And I’d say, “Dad, but what does that matter? I mean, you can still get fired if you’re a college man.” He says, “Yeah, but they can never take it away from you. They can never take your education away.”

That's the self-fulfilling prophecy? If you decided to skip college, take a trade, and work for a living, then the "college man" can come in and take you money away, but you can't take away his education. Joey should have listened to himself, and not his father that bankers knew couldn't be trusted with another loan.

My dad went to college around this same time. His father divorced my grandmother, who also couldn't afford college. My father worked his way to college, and he hitch-hiked to get there, because he didn't have a car. Hey Joey, sell the car or use it as collateral to get a loan. Don't steal from others to get what you want.

Among many other reasons, including government spending and involvement, that colleges are too damn expensive is because parents just send their kids there, "because education". Their kids don't want to be there, don't know what to do there, and don't succeed there, because they are not ready to be there. Yet, they are sent anyway, to fill up enrollment, and make a finite resource even more limited. Joey's father should have taught him to work for things in life, not take it from others. That way, he would have appreciated college when he got there, but more importantly, Joey wouldn't learn envy and stealing from others to have for yourself what they earned.

PPP loan forgiveness is cool, student loan forgiveness is destroying the economy.

I should just ignore your snarky bullshit but I'm on the board of an entity that received PPP (Paycheck Protection Program) loans. The loan program was written from the start to be forgivable if certain conditions were met. The entity receiving the loan had to show their normal operations were disrupted due to COVID (Our RR museum, employing 5 office and custodial staff, was closed for several months due to COVID lockdowns). The amount requested had to be related to your normal payroll pre-COVID. In order to be forgiven, you had to show that you maintained that payroll for several months during the COVID lock downs, otherwise the money had to be paid back just like any other loan.

There is absolutely no comparison between the PPP forgivable loans and Biden's unilateral discharge of upwards of one trillion dollars in student loan debt, and anybody bringing PPP up is just fling poo because they have no reasonable argument why Biden is doing this other than blatantly attempting to buy votes the Democrats desperately need in November.

The fact that the White House is officially tweeting about various republicans whose businesses received PPP Loan forgiveness is hilarious:

- PPP: A loan approved by congress MEANT TO BE FORGIVEN FROM THE START in exchange for the federal government shutting down that business.

- Student loans: A loan entered into by a (almost entirely) young adult, subsidized by the government, meant to be repaid in full regardless of bankruptcy over a period of many years in exchange for a college education.

This whole thing is becoming comically bad for democrats because they are literally parading clownish ideas as justifications - while their entire base is eating it up and looking like idiots. And in support of something that marginally benefits mostly the well off.

Until the early 90's, a person could pay their own way through school by working summers and after class. Borrowing money for college was not a usual thing during the time period when Joe's dad was humiliated by being turned down for a loan (a loan for what? We're left to presume Joe's tuition, but a scan of the transcript doesn't make that clear).

Even without the annoying repetition of "I'm not lying, really, it's the truth!" it'd be obvious he's making it up as he goes along.

I sold cars for one short cruel summer, Pontiacs, in the age of the Fiero. And I've known many a car dealer and salesperson over the years. Dealers, that is the OWNER of the dealership, will often put dealer plates on nice cars for their spouse and family members, but no one is dumb enough to do this for the teenage sons of Joseph R Biden Sr.

But there is a familiar pattern running through Joe's fantasy life as told to us and his real life. In his fantasy his old man lent him Cadillacs to cruise the Dover mean streets; in reality he was driving the Corvette his girlfriend let him drive, cruising around town and pissing off her actual husband who ran the local bar and bought her the Corvette so she would stop cheating on him. Joe assumed ownership of both when he married the skank. That was fake doctor Jill's car before it was Joe's "prized possession" (and it is till not an electric vehicle like he keeps pushing on the rest of us).

Ann, are you removing Meade's comments? Trouble in blog paradise?

Concerning Biden, he established himself as a liar long before he started to lose his mind. Now when he rambles on I can't imagine how anyone takes him seriously. And even if his story is true, how does that serve as an analogy to what he is proposing?

I have a car not fully paid for. I bought it from a friend, who I pay every month. Can I have the government pay that off? I have some credit card debt I'm still working on. It's not my fault they took advantage of me. Could I get a little help here? And yes, I have student loans. Mine are well above 10,000. It never dawned on me that I wasn't responsible for them. But why should the government stop at 10,000? Why not just wipe them all out entirely, so we can all have a clean slate? We can always print more money.

That this old decrepit buffoon is responsible for our country's finances is such a tragic joke upon a once great Republic.

In speeches, he emphasizes his modest upbringing and quotes aphorisms from his car-salesman father about dignity and honest labor. But this rendition of Biden’s upbringing, as Adam Entous puts it in this week’s magazine, is ‘woefully incomplete.’ Entous has done a deep and groundbreaking investigation into the President’s family history, uncovering a previously untold rags-to-riches-to-rags story of how the Bidens landed in Scranton. It’s a very different story from the one that Biden usually shares with the public, complete with mansions, yachts, and war profiteering. Entous joins Tyler Foggatt to discuss the Biden family’s finances, its history with addiction and scandal, and its influence on the President.”

I think Ron Klain's student debt forgiveness plan is a wonderful low cost purchase of votes this November. The Dems don't spend a dime of their own money on it. The most important part of the plan isn't that $10k buy-a-vote-for-November part, which may well be struck down in court next year.

The most important part is the elimination of interest payments from student loans, which might very well fly in court. That's not just buying votes for this election, it is an incentive to vote for the guy leaving money in your pocket for years to come. Make that retroactive for all current loan recipients, and you're talking a real vote-buying bonanza.

3. Accusations of racism are so common that they have become meaningless, but isn't it kind of racist to assume that Black and Hispanic borrowers don’t own their homes? I'm sure someone will call him out for that.

4. Who was the last President to use the word "jalopy," FDR?

5. Is the key to the program - the part where it's paid for and reduces the deficit - that extra day Biden is allowing before ending the repayment pause? Seems like a big deal to me!

6. Who are the "independent experts" who believe this plan won't have an impact on inflation? They must be banking on a really bad recession.

Those who take that kind of money but lectures others on college is too expensive are particularly annoying.

But in the article I found it told of Biden teaching as an adjunct at a law school (Widener - U. of Del) in Wilmington Delaware for over 20 years. How does someone teach constitutional law (as is claimed) and ignore it when he governs? First time I heard of that gig.

List the number of court cases where the Trump organization was accused of stiffing contractors as well as the disposition of those cases. Thanks in advance for having nothing else to say on this subject.

The good news for you is that the ChiCom's were never cheap when it came time to buying the Biden family and providing drugs and underage prostitutes to your Biden family heroes. Including the ones that shower with their daughters......

Remember when Joe Biden’s mob connections called a one day wildcat strike among newspaper delivery unions the day that Biden’s opponent for Biden’s first Senate seat ran an insert detailing Biden’s shady past and corruption the weekend before the election?

Nancy Pelosi’s dad was also a politician who was in the constant company of Baltimore mob figures, per Snopes. It’s like that speech Michael gives in The Godfather, where he says that one day they will be Senators and Congressmen.

There is a guy on the PA Supreme Court whose brother is a mobbed up union guy involved in ballot stuffing in PA per the DoJ.

They took control with the help of easily manipulated people, and now they have dragged us to the brink of WW3 over corrupt billions slopping around in Ukraine.

BTW, after watching “William Colby” on Netflix, I may have sold Godfather 3 short, we spent billions there controlling elections, funneled through the Vatican.

Any mention of where Biden gets the authority to do this? Any at all?

>>Hmmm...so grifting is bad when the Bidens do it, but good when the Trumps do it?

Trump isn't a grifter. He made billions in NYC real estate. Several of his project failed and went bankrupt.

Hillary, in contrast, at one point owed $30,000+ on her $1,000 investment in "cattle futures". She never had to cover that loss.

That's grifting. See the difference?

Everybody in Joe's family is a millionaire. Hunter, Howard (his son in law), his brother James and brother Frank, and his sister Valerie. They all got very rich while Joe was a senator or VP.
All of them.

That's grifting. See the difference?

C'mon, Cookie. Trump is an egomaniac and a blowhard, but he's not a grifter.

The one trope missing from the Biden spiel is the curious, self-referential, “I give you my word as a Biden.” That cracks me up every time he says it.

OMG! I suppose you could run around Delaware and Scranton and find people that heard the Old Man say it. You know, things like, “ Oh yeah. That was a joke we used to throw around. Biden’s old man was so full of malarkey that everyone knew he was a liar of the first order. So we used to ask him if he was giving his word as a Biden, and he’d say yes, everyone in Sligo or wherever they came from knew how honorable the Bidens were, and then we’d say well, what happened when you came over here you damned deadbeat! Joey is just as full of it as his dad.”

Someone needs to do some research on the ground.

Remember the Biden family sitting around the family table worrying about gas prices? Gas prices were never very high when Joe was growing up, and I don't think they rose precipitously. Maybe Joe's dad had trouble with the bank at some point, but I doubt what happened was exactly as he tells it here.

I didn't know anything about the "boxes of food" that people got from the government and that Biden's mentions in the speech, so I looked it up. The Trump administration authorized the distribution of boxes of food to families affected by COVID. The Biden administration cancelled the program. That was probably the right thing to do when the pandemic panic ended and people went back to work, but the facts don't jibe with the image of uncaring Republicans and poor people saved by Biden that Joe wants to create.

It's like the cost of insulin. Trump imposed controls on the price. Biden did away with them. Now he's campaigning on bringing the price cap back, even though the Democrats have been in control of Congress the last two years. They wanted to load the bill with all kinds of other matters, so it didn't past, but it gives them an issue to campaign on.

I read the David Dalton piece first, and then down to Biden's dad trying to borrow money from "Charlie", and suddenly it all made sense. The Bidens being an East Coast branch of the Manson family explains a whole lot.

Socialism promises equity but delivers equal misery for most, a few bennies for the apparatchiks, comfort and ease for the nomenklatura, and justified paranoia for anyone who dares to vary from the party line.

You might consider leaving the crayons alone.

"How many contractors and lawyers has Trump stiffed?"

Democrats don't understand the difference between business conflicts in the private sector and breaches of the public trust by electeds and bureaucrats.

Among the reasons for that is that prominent Democrats are mostly career politicians who became millionaires by grifting so they see it as a feature, not a bug. Republicans not so much. Trump not at all.

"I give you my word, true story."

Translation: what follows is truly a story. Doesn't mean it's true, just that it is a story. That it is a story, is true.

That the story itself is true is unstated, and unlikely in Joe's make-it-up-as-you-go world, even more so now that his always limited faculties are failing him in the sunset of his tawdry life.

"Not a joke, man." I'm surprised he left that one out.

The New Yorker article on Biden's father explains much. Biden Sr. never forgot his days as a polo playing, fox hunting, yachtsman, and apparently Joe hasn't either. He plays "middle class Joe" for us, but in his own mind he assumes he is made of finer stuff and entitled to more than that.

Joe Biden, Sr., was able to send his children to private (Catholic) schools. Joe, Jr. attended Archmere Academy, where he was a "poor student," according to Wikipedia. It's unlikely he was admitted to a "little Ivy." At the University of Delaware, he was an "unexceptional student."

Biden is living out Fudd’s Law: if you push on anything hard enough, it will fall over. In Biden’s case, he is pushing on the United States of America, its full faith and credit, and its constitution. President Obama: “Never underestimate Joe’s ability to fuck things up.”

Actually, Joe is saying he was wearing his baseball uniform.

We should be glad that, unlike his son Hunter, he has not recently talked about his huge penis—although when he gets around to it, he may well drop his trousers to show us.

Actually, it does. It does a better job than any other economic system that has existed. More importantly Capitalism has produced the highest standard of living worldwide, at a time when there are more humans than ever. Then why do we still have poor people? Because poverty is a relative term. Saying you want to eliminate poverty is as dumb as saying you want everyone to be above average. The US government redefines poverty every year to account for the rise in income. We can never win the fight against poverty because we continuously, literally, move the goal posts.
