Some of Politico's "The Worst Political Predictions of 2019" is really good, with genuine predictions that are genuinely ridiculous in hindsight.

Like "By the end of 2019, the president of the United States will be Nancy Pelosi."

But that's #17 on a list of 17, and the quality of the list declines from there and is totally botched at #1, which just has to be Trump, but apparently they couldn't find a bad enough Trump prediction to feature at #1 and they just brought up something he did that's not a prediction and — as presidential misdeeds go — isn't even that bad: Sharpiegate:
In advance of the storm making landfall, Trump tweeted that “In addition to Florida - South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama, will most likely be hit (much) harder than anticipated.” There were never any reputable weather maps that had Alabama in the direct path of the storm, and the National Weather Service in Birmingham quickly issued a statement correcting the president. Rather than admit a mistake, Trump produced a map of the hurricane’s path—and apparently used a marker to draw over the expert forecast and change the path of Dorian’s projected fallout area to include Alabama. The hurricane never did hit the state.

Some deterministic computer models plotting potential tracks for the center of Dorian suggested the center of Dorian could move through the Florida peninsula and into the Gulf of Mexico, where it could make a second landfall along the Northern Gulf Coast, including Alabama.

Obama, on the other hand said “In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died — an entire town destroyed.” The real death toll was 12.

I was in Florida during that storm. None of us knew where it was going to go at first. I'm on the Gulf coast. The first notice was for us to be aware that there were tracks showing it going through the state, coming back into the Gulf. If that happened, the track would naturally take it north- to the Florida Panhandle and the Alabama coast.

For Floridians, this was a no-brainer. For the rest of the country, and apparently for the media which does not like to leave New York- it was an astounding thing to contemplate.

Even though they were forced to show how much anti-Trump bias was behind many of these predictions, Politico still managed to put an anti-Trump spin on this ridiculous list. Trump’s saying the hurricane would hit Alabama is #1? Pathetic. Just pathetic.

Sharpiegate is actually significant. The Fake News speculates all the time and about everything. CAGW is a prediction about an event in the distant future. Fake News loves CAGW. But when Trump makes a wrong prediction about the inherently unpredictable path of a hurricane it is a major scandal per the Fake News.

What a bunch of fucking idiots and hypocrites.

This is 100% correct. When the first tracks for Dorian were published a week out, they ran right through my Central Florida back yard! Floridians understand that storms can go ANYWHERE and public officials stress the importance for ALL citizens to be aware of the danger and be prepared, no matter how unlikely it seems a week out.

People outside Florida who don't tune in until it's an hour from landfall act as if a storm's course is predetermined and known, because they see a big line on the map behind it.

You are lying. The track never showed it going across Florida and into the Gulf. NOAA does not draw cones more than five days out. The initial track was indeed due west, but the edge of the cone was in the middle of the state. By the next day, the cone was making a sharp northward turn, at first over Florida, but off the east coast as the storm drew closer. To extrapolate the cone based on the initial cone ignores all the warnings NOAA posts about the unpredictably of hurricanes.

There were some models that suggested that, days before Trump's public statement. By the time Trump said it, that was no longer the case. All of the professionals knew that Trump's statement was wrong and misleading in a serious way, about a serious matter (emergency storm preparations).

I have always been surprised at the callousness of Trump's fans. They seem to have no regard for earnest weather professionals in the NWS Birmingham AL office whose job it was to keep the people of Alabama safe and accurately informed. The Birmingham NWS staff heard Trump's statement and immediately knew that it was wrong. So wrong that they had to say something. (And of course as we know, White House Communications then tried to build a post-hoc case through political appointees at the expense of the professional staff.)

All of the blather and bullshit about how Trump cares for the little guys and the hard workers on the front lines of public service, and how Trump wanted to meet enlisted SEAL team members and "no officers" and blah blah blah. With Sharpiegate, the White House shamelessly tried to throw the NWS staff under the bus to protect Trump from his own falsehoods.

And of course, it all began with Trump himself; freelancing with his words in his own patented way without regard for any exacting accuracy. He does it all the time, and it should always get him into trouble because he is so routinely in error.

You're right, Althouse; the Sharpie stunt wasn't a "prediction" by Trump. But the bloviating by Trump WAS a prediction. Remember? "It may get a little piece of a great place — it’s called Alabama,” Trump said. “And Alabama could even be in for at least some very strong winds and something more than that, it could be. This just came up, unfortunately.“

And by the time he said that, it was untrue. It was a genuine screw-up by Trump of another kind, made almost unimaginably worse by trying to force Trump's mischaracterization onto the NWS after the fact, and then the fantastically incompetent stunt of using the Sharpie to expand an outdated hurricane "cone" map into Alabama. There might not have been another bad prediction on the list where the offeror of the prediction did more to cling to the inaccuracy.

Remember as well; when he was later asked about how the Sharpie mark got on the map, Trump claimed he didn't even know how the mark got there. "I don't know. I don't know. I don't know," Trump claimed. A day later, the Washington Post confirmed from multiple White House sources that Trump was the person who made the mark.

A laughable clusterfuck of Trumpian proportions. A nice year-ending memory.

You write as if deterministic models suddenly stop at 5 days. They don't. Every one in the public can access a 16-day forecast model right now, and they can access the ensemble models too to get an idea of the spread of the models. Dorian's path was all over the place in different models in the 7-10 day timeframe as steering currents in the models collapsed. This was well known. And it happened! Witness the crawl over the Bahamas and then the turn north.

The problem with Trump's prediction is that it relied on old information, as far as I can tell, and that was what the response should have been: The forecast threat to AL has diminished with time and current forecasts keep the storm to the east. Instead, the media/Democratic Party-driven was response was to invent the nonsense term "sharpie-gate" and bray out that Trump was wrong. He plays them like a violin.

What this discussion reveals is the left's inability to let understandable mistakes slide. Trump used information from the NOAA's spaghetti graph that showed about a third of the predictions showing the hurricane heading over Alabama (and possibly the Alabama National Guard's tweet) to urge people to prepare for the hurricane.

If this happened to your friend or to a Democratic Party politician, the result would be ignored, or excused with a shrug.

But, no, Politico puts "Sharpiegate" on a par with Obama's "you can keep your doctor if you want to" Lie of the Year, and the commentators like Freder getting personally nasty, poisoning the discourse with their pants-wetting screams.

If they expressed a particle of concern over Obama overseeing an espionage operation against an elected leader, or ginning up invisible "alt-right" racists to explain Hillary's defeat at the pols, you'd have more credibility.

Hey, it wasn't my idea for a blog post. Ask Althouse.

In fact, I think Althouse probably prefers her blog going back into Sharpiegate, rather than face the facts in the New York Times' bombshell story hitting its pages today that Pompeo, Bolton, Mulvaney and Esper all tried to get Trump to release the aid to Ukraine in August, and that Trump personally refused them. The story sets up massive pressure to get all of them to testify in the impeachment trial. They appear to have direct personal knowledge of Trump's personal direction of the aid.

So between that, and Sharpiegate, Althouse might have preferred the latter.

The worst prediction in the realm of politics of 2019 was also the worst one of 2017 and 2018 in hindsight- that Mueller's investigation would "get" Donald Trump- that it would prove the Russian Collusion theory that was the genesis of the investigation. That prediction was ludicrous on its face, as I wrote in these threads many, many times, and yet it was the main prediction of pretty much ever single poltical pundit and talk show host on the Left, and even a handful on the right.

That Mueller felt he had to put it into writing that he could not "exonerate" Trump is a pretty damning indicator that the report did exactly that- exonerate Trump. Otherwise the thing could have spoken for itself, but wasn't allowed to.

Well. All I can say is if anybody has an excuse to put their head in the oven and turn on the gas it's you.
Happy New Year!

No; we are talking about September 1, 2019. On that date, the latest predictive information showed Dorian turning sharply north. Only Trump got that wrong. Trump's tweet and subsequent statement could have been left as a silly overstatement by Trump, based on old information. But that is not what Trump's team did. They doubled down on it.

And that -- the process by which Trump said something stupid and then doubled and tripled and quadrupled down on it, in the face of clear undisputable facts to the contrary -- is what is a big deal to me. A hurricane non-event is NOT a big deal. A president with sociopathic tendencies IS a big deal.

there are many store fronts with german signs, to accommodate the Peenemunde group, they went there because there was a ufo sighting not far from there, there are allusions in the end, that the craft are some kind of interdimensional vessel, that is being tested there with live subjects, hyneks associate, captain quinn, was at Buchenwald, so he doesn't entirely trust him, yes von braun was at nordhausen, same general point,

LLR-lefty Chuck's hilarious weather talking points were debunked in real time when he pushed those lies at the time.

The fact that LLR-lefty Chuck is desperately clinging to his previously debunked weather talking points and his "any port in a storm" newest talking points re: Trump advisors and the clear Biden crime/corruption concerns re: Ukraine tells you all you need to know about LLR-lefty Chuck's beloved but rapidly shrinking moron democrat candidates for 2020.

Sorry Chuckie. I'm afraid there is no correlation to the volume of lefty lies you push and potential negative election impacts to President Trump.

Can you imagine how much gin LLR-lefty Chuck must be slinging these days just to get through the day?

That's Admiral Inga to you.

Did you know she is quite knowledgeable regarding Naval strategy and military wargame planning?

I think they teach that in the second year of nursing school.

In Admiral Inga's defense, she is every bit as insightful and knowledgeable regarding naval strategy and tactics as LLR-lefty Chuck is on conservative thought and how to defeat democrats.

However, in LLR-lefty Chuck's defense, his goal is not and never has been the defeat of democrats. Quite the opposite actually.

If anyone is wondering why huge Joe Biden fanboy LLR-lefty Chuck is in such a tizzy this week, its because his moron hero Slow Joe Biden has recently told the entire midwest that he will be happy to destroy all their jobs and their wages and destroy energy companies by jailing their executives AND he would be happy to appoint Barack Obama to the supreme court!!

Hard to imagine anything that Biden could have said that would make LLR-lefty Chuck happier in his President-Midwest Society of Obama Adoration role than that!

BTW, if you are wondering what I'm talking about, go back and read the astonishing suckup posts by LLR-lefty Chuck on his "magnificent" obama from the day after Christmas!!

I mean, wow. LLR-lefty Chuck outdid even Valerie Jarrett in his hagiographic praise of obambi!! Which is not easy to do, truth be told.

Chuck: What amazes me is that you don't see the difference between what you're arguing and what the media pushed. You're conceding that Trump was relying on "outdated" information... if I recall correctly, Trump was relying on information from Friday afternoon that was expired by Sunday morning. I personally figure that Presidenting is a time consuming job and being 36 hours behind on whether one state of several listed was still in the forecast is an pretty negligible error. But look at the way the article Ann posted about frames it - they're claiming that NOT EVEN OUTDATED info backed Trump. What you call "doubling and tripling" down was Trump pushing back against *that* idea. The idea that Trump's info wasn't just outdated but never existed at all. Trump was absolutely right to push back against that wild exaggeration. Nothing "sociopathic" about it. Your inability to acknowledge the above even when it's drawn out for you in crayon is sociopathic as hell, however.

Now would be a good time for Fullmoon or someone to post LLR-lefty Chuck's self-admitted purpose in pushing this fake nonsense.

In summary:
To purposefully smear and lie about Trump and to drive a wedge between Althouse and her blog readers.

And since Gary has chimed in with full support for LLR-left Chuck, we must assume he shares that intent as well.

Sorry Gary, there is only room on this blog for 1 FakeCon transparent liar LLR-lefty, and this Chuck.

Qwinn-

No. TIME did a nice timeline on the original events. Trump began the day with a Tweet warning that Alabama would be "hit." 20 minutes later, the Birmingham NWS Twitter account corrected the President's erroneous warning. But still later that day, Trump again told reporters, and then indicated in a meeting with FEMA, that Alabama may be hit. And to make it all the more Trumpy, the President stated that the storm “may get a little piece of a great place: It’s called Alabama. And Alabama could even be in for at least some very strong winds and something more than that, it could be. This just came up, unfortunately. It’s the size of — the storm that we’re talking about. So, for Alabama, just please be careful also.”

It seems clear to me that Trump was just pushing back for the hell of it at that point. And making up shit about something (what?!?) "that just came up." I expect that the whole White House staff knew at that time how they had been schooled by Birmingham NWS, and had told Trump, and that Trump refused to back down.

https://time.com/5671606/trump-hurricane-dorian-alabama/

Qwinn, you're making up stuff that is far too reasonable for this case. Your notion is that a busy President, in the midst of preparing for a major hurricane, could possibly make a mistake in listing areas that could be affected. That is what any reasonable person would think. And any reasonable President, and his staff, could acknowledge such an error and move on.

But we're not talking about what a reasonable President, acting sensibly, might do. We're talking about Trump.

Notice that your reply STILL ignores the fact that while Trump repeated an outdated forecast, the media reported, both then and now, that no such outdated forecast ever existed. The very article quoted by Ann today does it yet again. But listening to you, the media was completely fair to Trump in this matter, and Trump had no reason to call them out on anything.

This is why you're not worth engaging with. Ever.

Look at the timeline story that was published by TIME. It's detailed. It's accurate. It's all you need, to figure out the fundamental mistake, and then the relentless defense of that mistake by Trump. It's great, accurate reporting by TIME.

Look at the ridiculous Sharpie map that Trump used. It's from Thursday at 11am. It was obsolete by Sunday. And all the weather professionals knew it. And so when did Trump ever say, "Sorry, when I spoke on Sunday I didn't realize that Alabama was in the clear. Nobody updated me. I'm a busy guy, and I was relying on old information..."? Answer; never. Trump never admits a mistake. Trump denies his mistakes.
