The four handed handshake while gazing deeply in each other's eyes. So funny. Surely there's no one in the world that can fall for that.

And in case you haven't seen here's a new I guess 4chan troll. It really has people confused. Also very funny

I think that pointing out that his background is entirely in something as unserious as theater, not even unserious, disserious, is maybe more damaging than the blackface.

I am pretty right-libertarian, but that tweet seems pointlessly mean. Trudeau's blackface was always in a costume setting, not seriously claiming blackness as part of his identity. (Has Canada had their "First Black Prime Minister" yet?) What Trudeau did was bad enough, but what he did does not suggest -- at least to me -- that he would make the kind of identification at the crux of this joke.

On the other hand, the Babylon Bee headline "Elizabeth Warren Admits To Wearing Paleface At College Costume Party" did hit home.

Politics ain’t beanbag. I think that being called a racist because you disagree with Trudeau about the best policies for Canada is “pointlessly mean” too. That ship has sailed.

This is true of everyone who has gotten in trouble for blackface.

The whole issue is f*****g stupid.

Because I'm a racist I think Trudeau should get a break because of his 'Hispanic' ethnicity.

Sure, but one can (and I do) also point out how stupid it is to claim racism when policy disagreement is the primary basis for the claim.

I think if one is going to be intentionally mean to an opponent, which Klavan did here, there should be a clear point beyond signaling which tribe you belong to. This tweet exaggerates what Trudeau did in an implausible direction, and only makes sense to people who already know of Trudeau's history of wearing blackface. The only point I see is "Canadian Internet boyfriend bad", which is less substance than I think my general side should offer.

Really?

Besides, game theory says that you have to respond to aggression with aggression at least some of the time if you ever hope to come to some kind of peace. Always taking the high road just teaches the other side that they can act with impunity.... and they would be right!

Klavan's caption is a barb, but posting the picture points out the transparent phoniness of what Trudeau is doing: "See! Some of my best friends are Afro-Canadians!"

-- Hey, it is their rules we're making them live by.

"This tweet exaggerates what Trudeau did in an implausible direction, and only makes sense to people who already know of Trudeau's history of wearing blackface."

-- Yes. That is the essence of political satire. Swift's commentary on breaking of eggs leading to war is just nonsense if you don't understand the context.

Matt Sablan said...

"I think if one is going to be intentionally mean to an opponent, which Klavan did here, there should be a clear point beyond signaling which tribe you belong to."

-- The point is: "Don't you think this is a stupid benchmark/rule when it is applied to you? Maybe, then, you should stop using this bludgeon against your opponents." The surest way to put an end to a bad rule is vigorous enforcement.

Matt Sablan said...

"The only point I see is "Canadian Internet boyfriend bad", which is less substance than I think my general side should offer."

-- See, I can see now why a few other posters think you're being disingenuous with your claim of being on the right. Because this construction, along with several others, paint you as a caricature of the right and not someone who actually *understands the positions and beliefs of those on the right.* Like here:

"Trudeau's blackface was always in a costume setting, not seriously claiming blackness as part of his identity."

-- That's been blackface since its inception. The point of why it is offensive is that *it is a costume.* It is offensive *because it blots out the identity of actual blacks/African-Americans and replaces them with white actors and makes it appear that authenticity is just a caricature.* To pretend that "it's just a costume!" is the leftist defense that was used with the VA duo earlier this year (last year?), while leaving open the chance to claim "cultural appropriation" in Halloween costumes.

"What Trudeau did was bad enough, but what he did does not suggest -- at least to me -- that he would make the kind of identification at the crux of this joke."

-- Actually, Trudeau does acknowledge the action was racist and has been on a tour to try and show that he is not racist. The whole point of the joke is Trudeau is so tone deaf that he doesn't actually *know what's racist* and continues to stumble through a minefield of faux pas.

Matt Sablan said...

The fun part is that, just like with the people in VA, the media is still trying to claim this is "darkface" or "dark makeup" and not just straight up calling it what it is.

I once had an acquaintance you used to talk about “malicious obedience,” bringing a factory to a halt by rigorously following every rule.

Chuckservatives -routinely- apologize for the most retrograde leftist behavior, from Bill Clinton's obvious perjury to Justin Trudeau adopting a comedic costume that was considered offensive 40 years ago. All the while mercilessly insisting that all conservatives, especially President Donald Trump, be held to the most exacting standard- and fabricating scandals when people like the President pass the Mueller test. It's doubly disgusting given their closeted homosexuality/ pederasty, as seen with Dennis Hastert and quite a few Congressmen.

They are actually much worse than leftists, and deserve the most swift and severe punishment for their treachery. It amuses me to think that their deaths could be blamed on the left as much as the right.

e.g. W. The most virulent LLR NeverTrumpers I know decry Trump’s happy warrior treatment of the lefties. They say it’s not appropriate behavior for our president. The problem is that if you don’t fight back, the libruls will eat you alive. I say kick ‘em in the nutz and laugh maniacally when you do it.

Is the mere act of wearing blackface racist, or does the racism derive from the caricatured behavior thought to usually accompany wearing blackface.

If the former, what about John Howard Griffin, the author of "Black Like Me."

If the latter, don't we need to more about what someone did in blackface than the mere act of wearing it?

The Tit for Tat strategy, which has its own Wikipedia page. It says you should always respond to aggression with an equal amount of aggression.

It's been proved (at least at two programming tournaments) to be a winning strategy.

I, too, loved the blackface jokes, but I'm not calling for his resignation or assassination. And if he had laughed it off and said, "Don't be silly, I didn't harm anyone," we would have had more respect for him.

Sort of like the hip-hop people now showing respect for Martha Stewart, who did her dime for her crime and didn't rat out her homies, unlike Tekashi 6ix9ine.

(Why, yes, these are the crazy years.)

Game theory also suggests it pays to be dovish when others are hawkish and it pays to be hawkish when others are dovish. Sounds like a current President I know...

Thank you for that. I keep bringing this up because LLRs keep saying we should just shut up and ignore stuff that would be used to pillory our guys. It’s stupid. Force them to live by their own rules, that’s their rule, Alinsky Rule #4 to be exact.

RULE 4: “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.” If the rule is that every letter gets a reply, send 30,000 letters. You can kill them with this because no one can possibly obey all of their own rules. (This is a serious rule. The besieged entity’s very credibility and reputation is at stake, because if activists catch it lying or not living up to its commitments, they can continue to chip away at the damage.)
