"I just think that there is a man that got elected President. He is in the White House. He has vast support from his base. He was elected fairly and legally. And I think what happened is that the left is so hurt by this that they have overreacted to the Presidency. Now, look, I live with a Democratic, socialist-bordering-on-communist millennial. I hear it every day.... I am not that interested in politics. I am not that interested in policy. What I was interested in was the coverage. Especially in Hollywood, there was an immense overreaction. I don’t care really about Trump that much, and I don’t care about politics. I was forced to care based on how it was covered and how people have reacted. Sure, you can be hysterical, or you can wait and vote him out of office.... I think I am an absurdist. I think politics are ridiculous.... I think the problem is that I don’t necessarily see this as interesting as fiction.... It’s interesting to have that back-and-forth pull in an interview. The only problem, however, is that I am not that political, and so, when we have this conversation, and you confront me with certain things like this, I really am, I have to say, at a loss."

Yeah, I read the interview earlier this morning. It just amazes me how journalists don't seem to have any ability at all to recognize when they are making fools of themselves. It is one thing for anonymous commenters to do so so, but someone like Chotiner is doing so under his own name. Ms. Althouse is correct- you really should read that section's back and forth- Chotiner was being obviously foolish. Ellis' response was really good, but I doubt Chotiner even realized it.

But they also calculated correctly: given the early efforts to spy on Trump and derail his campaign, a further escalation was necessary to cover up that egregious deep-state Dem attack; an all-out offensive would also mobilize their base and improve their prospects, especially with nice women insulted by Trump's style; and the left is in any case in go-for-broke mode, willing to destroy the very system for the sake of attaining ultimate power.

Your answer here will either solidify whether the reaction to Trump was an overreaction, or a legitimate one.

My understanding is that "good people on both sides" referred to pro- and anti-statue opinions, not demonstrators. "Rapists" was describing MS-13, not Mexicans in general. Reading the full context of both remarks (widely available) should at least lead to some doubt about the usual way they are presented.
Chotiner seems to be the sort of person who can't be convinced he is wrong on any partisan issue. My guess is he still thinks Alger Hiss was innocent, not to mention any later controversy.

To summarize; I regard Trump as a "kook," and "crazy" and a "jackass," and have said that I think he is personally unfit for the presidency. But I voted for him. And I have been an ardent supporter of Trump's federal judicial nominees.
Do you know who I sound like on all of that? Senator Lindsey Graham. Each one of those terms I put in quotes. Straight from Graham in 2016.
And the funny thing is that I am to the right of Graham, when it comes to negotiating legal reforms to immigration policy. I think Graham is a lot more conciliatory than I'd like. But of course Graham is there in Washington, speaking with Democrats daily. And unlike me, he gets personal pressure on the real life details of the state of affairs with immigration and border security. From the right and the left.
But yeah; unless Mitch McConnell and Graham and about three dozen other Republicans in Congress have "TDS," I really don't think I qualify.

There are thousands of criminals and traitors in DC who are now exposed.

Didn't pretty much the same thing happen just a couple of months ago, after Chotiner interviewed the conservative writer Victor Davis Hanson, whose new book is "The Case for Trump". The New Yorker published an edited transcript clearly intended to make Hanson look ridiculous and Hanson suggested that if the magazine put the full transcript up on its website, readers would probably see the interview in a very different light?
Hanson tweeted: "If Mr. Chotiner would release an accurate transcription of our 'long conversation,' there will appear wide discrepancies in tone, intent and content from the published interview."
No full transcript has ever been released, although the New Yorker seems pretty se on seeing the unredacted Mueller report.

The hysteria over Trump is the result of raw ignorance of Our Nations founding and the Constitution that defines the power of the federal government and lays out the 3 branches of government, and the powers of those 3 branches.
The President sits for a 4 year term. The entire House of Representative, and 1/3 of the Senate is up for election in 2 years.
The President has limited defined powers. Worst case scenario is the voters make a mistake, and correct that mistake by electing an opponent party, veto proof majorities in the House and Senate.
If that doesn't happen, then, regardless of what Joe and Mika tell their audience, nothing is askew in Capital city, and the United State marches ever forward.
Trump is demonstrably a good President. He is getting good results from implementing his policies that are all to the betterment of the United States. His detractors don't like him because he is not a politician, and cannot be controlled by political stimulus.
