"The hysteria over Trump is what I am talking about. It’s not about his policies or supposed racism. It’s about what I see as an overreaction to Trump...."

"I just think that there is a man that got elected President. He is in the White House. He has vast support from his base. He was elected fairly and legally. And I think what happened is that the left is so hurt by this that they have overreacted to the Presidency. Now, look, I live with a Democratic, socialist-bordering-on-communist millennial. I hear it every day.... I am not that interested in politics. I am not that interested in policy. What I was interested in was the coverage. Especially in Hollywood, there was an immense overreaction. I don’t care really about Trump that much, and I don’t care about politics. I was forced to care based on how it was covered and how people have reacted. Sure, you can be hysterical, or you can wait and vote him out of office.... I think I am an absurdist. I think politics are ridiculous.... I think the problem is that I don’t necessarily see this as interesting as fiction.... It’s interesting to have that back-and-forth pull in an interview. The only problem, however, is that I am not that political, and so, when we have this conversation, and you confront me with certain things like this, I really am, I have to say, at a loss."

Said Bret Easton Ellis, interviewed by Isaac Chotiner in The New Yorker. BEE is promoting his new book, "White," which comes out in 5 days. My excerpt leaves out all of Chotiner's contributions. Put them back in, and you can see Chotiner must believe he's made a fool out of BEE.

The insane thing is that things are actually going pretty well. It's one thing if millions of people are starving in the streets, or millions of people are being sent to forced labor camps, or there's millions of murders and rapes and suicides going on. Or we're in some sort of hellish financial collapse huge numbers of people losing their homes. But that's not what's happening here.

This is crisis that exists entirely in the minds of those on the left. It's completely manufactured. The media benefits from it, they make money by promoting and enforcing this hysteria.

Yeah, I read the interview earlier this morning. It just amazes me how journalists don't seem to have any ability at all to recognize when they are making fools of themselves. It is one thing for anonymous commenters to do so so, but someone like Chotiner is doing so under his own name. Ms. Althouse is correct- you really should read that section's back and forth- Chotiner was being obviously foolish. Ellis' response was really good, but I doubt Chotiner even realized it.

BEE gets it perfectly right. It is hysteria and overreaction by the Left. They are still butt-hurt over losing to Trump in 2016, when the polls told them Hillary would win. They are still trying to find a way to explain the loss and/or undermine the win. Russian Collusion was their best hope, but alas, Mueller said it was not to be.

Myself, my historical batting average is .500. Half the time my guy wins, half the time he loses. I respect the office and the process, and I get over the losses. I guess others don't.

Just another reason Americans are concerned about a POTUS who is either this dumb or this dishonest. Nothing to worry about? Eh?

“President Donald Trump seemed delighted on Thursday when he posted a screen-shot from Lou Dobbs‘ Fox Business show supposedly showing his approval polling is at 55%.

There’s just one little problem: the number is way off, and his actual approval rating according to that poll is a paltry 43%.

The Fox Business host spent a good portion of his show repeatedly fawning over a new poll from the Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service on Trump and the economy. Dobbs framed the poll’s findings with the graphic above, saying Trump enjoys “soaring approval” from 58% of voters for his performance on the economy, and an impressive 55% from voters overall.

To be clear: Trump’s disapproval is 55%, according to that poll. His approval rating, meanwhile, is 43%. That means his numbers are underwater by 12%.”

Yes, they overreacted: with a slightly different approach, they could have gotten more results to their liking. Trump did not come into office as a righty ideologue.

But they also calculated correctly: given the early efforts to spy on Trump and derail his campaign, a further escalation was necessary to cover up that egregious deep-state Dem attack; an all-out offensive would also mobilize their base and improve their prospects, especially with nice women insulted by Trump's style; and the left is in any case in go-for-broke mode, willing to destroy the very system for the sake of attaining ultimate power.

I can only speak for myself. For my comment on this page, I want to agree with all of this:

"I just think that there is a man that got elected President. He is in the White House. He has vast support from his base. He was elected fairly and legally.

That is all true. Trump was elected president (with my vote, in Trump's razor-thin Michigan margin of victory). And I have never seen any evidence that the election was not fair and legal.

I'm a Republican. Who likes Trump's mainstream Republican federal judicial nominations.

I know that there is large and intense support for Trump among his base. I'm not part of that, because Trump is such a reprehensible person. But I am not a socialist, not a global warmist, not a Democrat, not any of the extremist left identity groups who have so much silliness to answer for.

I'm in the best of all positions. I do not have to answer for left wing extremism and I don't have to answer for Trump Cult extremism.

So have I "proven" any point that Jim might have suggested?

30% of Americans are "concerned." The reason why Democrats are all kissing Al Sharpton's ring is they are scared shitless that black voters are wising up. Last poll 20% of blacks support Trump.

Then the Hispanics are figuring out that open borders are a bad idea for legal residents. 50 to 55% support Trump now.

Result: hysteria.

Some others are now talking. Caputo was approached by a RUSSIAN national working for the FBI and told he had some dirt on Hillary. Caputo was another peripheral figure. Fortunately for him, he said no. Mueller still went after him to the tune of a million $ in legal fees.

Yes indeed; I do claim that.

To summarize; I regard Trump as a "kook," and "crazy" and a "jackass," and have said that I think he is personally unfit for the presidency. But I voted for him. And I have been an ardent supporter of Trump's federal judicial nominees.

Do you know who I sound like on all of that? Senator Lindsey Graham. Each one of those terms I put in quotes. Straight from Graham in 2016.

And the funny thing is that I am to the right of Graham, when it comes to negotiating legal reforms to immigration policy. I think Graham is a lot more conciliatory than I'd like. But of course Graham is there in Washington, speaking with Democrats daily. And unlike me, he gets personal pressure on the real life details of the state of affairs with immigration and border security. From the right and the left.

But yeah; unless Mitch McConnell and Graham and about three dozen other Republicans in Congress have "TDS," I really don't think I qualify.

I've never endorsed a Democrat, never voted for one in this century, and I don't subscribe to a single thing in their platform. I've been a huge fan of Justice Scalia, and the Federalist Society, and AEI, and the Manhattan Institute, and the Media Research Center, and National Review, and even Heritage for the most part. I'm arguably more "Trump" than conservatives like Jonah Goldberg, Bill Kristol, Steve Hayes or Charlie Sykes, since unlike them I voted for Trump when the general election of 2016 rolled around.

I posted a comment in April of 2018 -- A YEAR AGO -- that I didn't see much in the way of any "collusion" evidence or charges.

If all that makes me "TDS," then "TDS" has lost all meaning and usefulness as a topic of conversation.

The hysteria over Trump is the result of raw ignorance of Our Nations founding and the Constitution that defines the power of the federal government and lays out the 3 branches of government, and the powers of those 3 branches.
The President sits for a 4 year term. The entire House of Representative, and 1/3 of the Senate is up for election in 2 years.
The President has limited defined powers. Worst case scenario is the voters make a mistake, and correct that mistake by electing an opponent party, veto proof majorities in the House and Senate.

If that doesn't happen, then, regardless of what Joe and Mika tell their audience, nothing is askew in Capital city, and the United State marches ever forward.

Trump is demonstrably a good President. He is getting good results from implementing his policies that are all to the betterment of the United States. His detractors don't like him because he is not a politician, and cannot be controlled by political stimulus.

Most of the time it was sensibly stated with real issues,. I thought Obama was an empty suit and stated my reasons before he was elected.

Several months before Obama announced his U.S. Senate bid, Jones called his old friend Cliff Kelley, a former Chicago alderman who now hosts the city’s most popular black call-in radio program.

I called Kelley last week and he recollected the private conversation as follows:

“He said, ‘Cliff, I’m gonna make me a U.S. Senator.'”

“Oh, you are? Who might that be?”

“Barack Obama.”

Jones appointed Obama sponsor of virtually every high-profile piece of legislation, angering many rank-and-file state legislators who had more seniority than Obama and had spent years championing the bills.

“I took all the beatings and insults and endured all the racist comments over the years from nasty Republican committee chairmen,” State Senator Rickey Hendon, the original sponsor of landmark racial profiling and videotaped confession legislation yanked away by Jones and given to Obama, complained to me at the time. “Barack didn’t have to endure any of it, yet, in the end, he got all the credit.

Deplorable. Trumpkin. Teabagger, Bitter Clinger. Irredeemable. Wacko Bird.

Obama, Hillary, McCain, and Chuck have all individually used one or more of these terms to describe republican voters.

None of this has anything to do with Republican and Democrat. This is entirely class conflict.

Trump's greatest accomplishment is taking off the masks.

No person who actually voted for Trump has been disappointed in any way.

I'm not particularly disappointed that I voted for Trump in the general election. I was permanently disappointed when Trump became the nominee. I did not vote for Trump then.

The only time(s) that I have used the term "Deplorable" was when the Trump crowd was cheering for such objectively, horrifyingly deplorable shit that I laughingly reminded them that "deplorable" was supposed to be an epithet and not a mission statement.

"Trumpkin" I have used semi-regularly. You are a Trumpkin.

"Tea Bagger" I have used very rarely and advisedly.

"Bitter clinger" is an Obama thing. I never once voted for or supported Obama. Irredeemable, Wacko Bird. I cannot ever once using those terms.

One strain of this comment threads intrigues me: that Flynn was deliberately targeted by McCabe (FBI) or Brennan (CIA) because they held a personal grudge against Flynn. We have:

Schumer's stated opinion that if you piss off the intelligence organizations they will strike back.
Some information suggestion that the origin (oranges) of the Trump-Russia was really to target Flynn.
The suggestion that FLynn pissed off CIA by disputing or disrespecting their work on Bengazi.
The suggestions in the comments above that Flynn pissed off McCabe by reporting on a woman who had a complaint about McCabe (I don't know anything about this story).

So, at this point it's pretty much tin-foil hat stuff; but it's not all so far fetched that I can't imagine there is something to it.

There's a recent woke one where the wife is a helicopter pilot so presumably gets to participate in male heroics.

I think this one though

"A massive ice shelf has collapsed in the Russian Arctic. Intense shock waves are rocking the region. And military geologist Michael Webster and [?sic] his family's snowy wilderness hike to cut down a Christmas tree leaves them trapped by huge ice geysers, giant avalanches and enormous cracks in the permafrost. But with the help of a hard-nosed Army Colonel and their own survival instincts, can they now find a way to stop a monstrous methane explosion that threatens to destroy the entire planet?"

No heroic women in that one except protecting the child, if there is one, I'd guess.

rhhardin said...

The last disaster movie had a child who was the cause of most of the escaping trouble, and the wife died in an elevator shaft plunge anyway, to show it isn't your ordinary disaster movie where everybody lives. Plus heros with drinking problems from the last disaster seems to be a thing today too.

This could all be set right with a political disaster movie.

That whole interview pretty-well summed up a particular strain of American thinking.

Either you think Trump is a racist, and therefore there is no reaction too strong to him inhabiting the Presidency.

Or you don't and nothing you say going forward will be taken seriously by large swaths of the country.

It's the classic, "Heads I win, Tails You Lose" scenario, and it illustrates why the Mueller Report will have no large-scale impact on these same people.

As far as they're concerned, Trump will always be a racist and he's still the President. The only variable in their universe which can change is to remove him from office.

And the next Republican who runs for President? Well, they'll just clearly be a racist too.

Kevin said...

Only in America would a deadly serious attempt at a coup play out in most people's minds as the equivalent of a long-running TV series they are getting tired of, the way BEE pictures it. Bottom line - the coup isn't going to rescue the Democrats. Trump has achievements, things he did while the coup attempt was going on. - in the economy, tax reform, on the Supreme Court, deregulation, reining in the administrative state - to point to. Whereas the Dems have nothing to show for the last two years. And they are running lightweights and women to save the party from its nothingness. That shows how broken they are. Whenever I see men allowing women to run major institutions I always think that that major institution is so broken that running it harms one's career and the guys see that and get out. But women are loyal and eager and get stuck with the baby. Examples: Chicago, the Democratic party.

I think a tremendous number of people hate to be manipulated, or told what to think. Clearly, Ellis' boyfriend is very hostile to Donald Trump. That's the vibe in their house, right? "I hate Donald Trump so much!" And when people feel passionate or strong about a subject, you can either join them completely, or step back and not join them.

That's what he's done. His boyfriend (I assume) is so hostile to Trump, that Ellis is taking a more distanced view, just to preserve space and independence.

The media (and the left) should think about this on a national scale. What's it like when you are passionately opposed to a president? You call him "Hitler, Hitler, Hitler," and two years later it's pretty damn clear he's not HItler. And you've stopped calling him Hitler. But now we're all supposed to listen to you about what a monster he is? And then it turns out he's not a spy for Russia. Which was a pretty idiotic thing to say.

How do you suppose all these non-political people who don't pay much attention are going to react to your exaggeration and name-calling? Maybe some of them will jump on board and follow you. But maybe a lot of them will back away from you and your unfair accusations.
