"Beto O'Rourke leapfrogs most of the 2020 Democratic field."

Chris Cillizza and Harry Enten, write at CNN.
O'Rourke has that thing that every candidate -- Democrat or Republican -- wants: organic energy. He generates excitement everywhere he goes -- and is being urged to run by activists from all over the Democratic base. He's the flavor of the moment, no question...
They present a top 10 ranking:
10. Kirsten Gillibrand... She has the most anti-Trump record of any senator...(Previous ranking: Not ranked)

9. Julian Castro: He's running!... [But is there] room for both young Texas Democratic firebrands, Castro and O'Rourke.... (Previous ranking: 7)

8. Sherrod Brown... Still, Brown's a white male in a party that is becoming less white and was intent on nominating women in 2018.... (Previous ranking: 9)

7. Amy Klobuchar: We probably had the Minnesota senator ranked too highly last month... (Previous ranking: 4)

6. Bernie Sanders... We wonder though if time has passed Sanders by... (Previous ranking: 6)

5. Elizabeth Warren: The last month has made clear just how much damage Warren did to her chances with a badly botched attempt to put to rest questions about her Native American heritage.... (Previous ranking: 2)

4. Cory Booker... some progressives view him as a dreaded "neoliberal," and some may see him as a bit over-dramatic (see his "Spartacus" moment). (Previous ranking: 5)

3. Joe Biden.... a septuagenarian white male... (Previous ranking: 3)

2. Beto O'Rourke: The guy just lost a Senate race. And yet, here we are with O'Rourke in second... Still, folks really shouldn't get ahead of themselves.... Will Democrats actually nominate a white man in 2020?.... (Previous ranking: 10)

1. Kamala Harris... an Indian-American and African-American woman with a law-and-order background -- looks tailor made for the 2020 Democratic electorate.... (Previous ranking: 1)
Well, there you have it: The Democrats don't want a white man. Is Beto O'Rourke still a white man? Puzzling!!!

ADDED: Overheard at Meadhouse: "Why aren't the Democratic candidates better? I'm just going to be for Amy Klobuchar."

A character like Beto O'Rourke illustrates the Democrat's utter superficiality perfectly. A good looking white dude who is hip (he rides skateboards!), mouths the correct banalities, and has very little to speak of in terms of actual accomplishments. As a bonus, he has the driving record of a Kennedy.

O'Rourke is an honorary Hispanic, thus not white at all.

Yes, Beto O’Rourke is a white man. Democrats and their consorts in the media are just too stupid to figure that out.

Just look at that field: Kampala “I didn’t know” Harris, Beto “hit and run“ O’Rourke, Joe the Groper, Spartacus, Fauxcahontas, Bernie the aged commie,.... Compare it to the field Trump defeated. Democrat politicians are pathetic and their base moronic and Republicans failed to capitalize on it.

Are you really unsure how to "quit" Trump?

I'd be the first to sit down with you for a beer, and bemoan the national inability to "replace" Trump. That list of Democrats contained not a single name that I will ever vote for, under any circumstances. "I'm just going to be for Amy Klobuchar" is something that has never been said in my house. But of course my house has never been home to an Obama voter either. Why wouldn't someone who previously voted for Obama eagerly look forward to voting for Kamala Harris or Eric Holder? Policy-wise; personality-wise; image-wise; Kamala Harris and/or Eric Holder are perfect successors to the Obama legacy. We'd need to ask an Obama voter; and I am not sure if that would include you, Meade. Perhaps someone you know may have been an Obama voter.

I've got a feeling we won't see many candidates for long.

Democrats are the royal party now. They crown the queen and everyone else needs to get out of the way. So, we will probably see Biden , Harris and O'Rourke battle it out while everyone else is kind of shoved off to the sidelines.

Biden doesn't have a chance. Unless he suddenly discovers he is another sex or race, which is ok as long as you're a Democrat.

Beto is lucky, everyone thinks he's Hispanic so he won't be deemed a white male.

Kamala has the best shot though, thanks to identity politics. Biden and Beto will be racists and full fledged members of the patriarchy before the primaries are over.

I can certainly imagine not voting for Trump. If I had the chance to vote for Mitt Romney instead of Trump, I would do so every day of the week and twice on Sundays. If there were a plausible third party, I could do that. If I had to withhold any vote for President, I could imagine doing that. I could particularly imagine doing that if, unlike in 2016, it became clear before 2020 that Trump was a felon who was escaping prosecution only because he was the current occupant of the White House. I think that I would be joined by the other Republican lawyers who have joined George Conway III's "Checks and Balances" group. I would be in very good company.

Back to my question to you, Meade; why would a past Obama voter not enthusiastically support Kamala Harris or Eric Holder or even Cory Booker? Why would any Obama voter support Trump for election, or re-election, or anything else? Trump loathes Obama. Obama loathes Trump. What sort of person would vote for Obama, and then Trump? (And yes, we do have an idea insofar as we know of counties that went strongly for Obama in '08/'12, and then Trump in '16. Ballotpedia calls them the "Pivot Counties.")

I think that their nominee will be Kamala Harris, because she checks the most boxes. Beto will be easy to take down - just start calling him “Bobby”. That will emphasize that he is white Irish trying to pass as Hispanic. Or something like that. My vote for a Dem nominee would be Hickendooper. He has, I think, the most crossover appeal. Most of the list of top ten are far left whack jobs. Hickenbooper actually had a real job, running his own successful business before being elected Denver Mayor, then CO governor. He also governed somewhat pragmatically, not as a mind dead leftist (which is what his successor will almost inevitably do - he was horrible as my Congressman, hard left as they come (he represented Boulder) when I lived there, and shows no evidence of coming back to reality). And, of course, Hickenzooper has executive experience, as a business owner, mayor, and governor, which is part of why he would be better than anyone on the list. But, of course, he won’t get the nomination: he doesn’t check any boxes; isn’t an empty suit; wasn’t in Congress; and might actually be competent.

As in 2016, the only Democrat I could ever envision voting for over Trump is Bernie Sanders. Despite all the socialist rhetoric, Sanders is a relatively level headed guy. He at least accurately recognizes that loose immigration is a corporatist cheap labor racket. And he would likely give us a less aggressive, interventionist foreign policy while finding a lot of his domestic agenda blocked or neutered in Congress. But, as Ann has correctly identified, it is hard to imagine a white male at the head of ticket. Witness O'Rourke's "flight from white," to use a phrase coined by Steve Sailer. The Democratic Party has essentially designed itself as the anti-white-guy party.

Leland said...

Beto as a nominee would guarantee Trump is President in 2021. Beto's only accomplishments are being a 3 time Representative from El Paso, TX and marrying rich. He has an identity problem which includes a big time cultural appropriation, because he's no Hispanic. He ducked as many debates with Cruz that he could, and looked terrible when he ran out of excuses. The only thing Beto brings to the table for Democrats is that he looks like RFK, lives like John F Kerry, and will make Democrats think they'll win Texas, when they won't.

I think we should develop some pre-defined categories for LLR Chuck's endless Dem Defense tactics in order to provide a shorthand way of capturing his passionate dem defenses.

For instance, LLR Chuck's strong obfuscation in support of Dick Durbin and the Open Borders immigration position could simply be called a "Durbin".

LLR Chucks strong defense of democrats when they lie about their achievements could be called pulling a "Blumenthal", in honor of LLR Chuck's repeated, knowing, lies to deflect from Blumenthals inexcusable Stolen Valor lies which LLR Chuck eagerly gobbled up and swallowed whole.

Pulling a Maddow would be for those many many many times LLR Chuck heaps over the top praise in typical hack lefty talking heads.

Lol. About as depressing as any ordinary Republican's life.

The "field" is indeed uninspiring. But I don't care for inspiration at this moment. Enough decent every-day heroes are finally getting elected into the House, and its widening progressive caucus.

But for president, I just want somebody who's going to smash the daylights out of the ever-losing Republican psyche. I don't need anyone to demoralize them. They already apparently underwent that under Obama. And they still didn't learn their lesson. Instead they became factionalized and idiotic, drooling dirt people. Rabid pets moreso than humans, and in swift need of being put down. Morons who could only "save" themselves by electing someone as angry and unhinged and devoid of purpose as they were, and still remain.

So the next president will come in on a progressive platform. With that covered, he/she should just build a power base - with or without a machine - and call out every soul-sucking spineless Republican for the human waste that they are, while the president builds some infrastructure, international alliances, economic/social/environmental progress - and coasts through those victories in a first term to a future of Republican legislative representation dwindling below 40%.

Apparently not as bad as Republicans. Name one Republican policy that ever improved the lives of the American people.

You know you can't.

Republicans gave us the Great Depression. 80 years later they repeated the same policies that gave us that and we wound up with the global Great Recession.

They deregulated, off-shored, downsized, corporatized and gave us the Reagan-Wall Street-COC nexus that caused all the denationalization of American industry in the first place.

The Great Depression was bad enough. But of course history shows that it also kicked off WWII, and the rise of Nazi fascism throughout Europe. This killed tens of millions, and made it necessary to align with a Stalin that could only be emboldened after the Allied WWII win to give us a global cold war with communism spreading for decades afterward.

In modern times, Republicans de-regulated the pharmaceutical industry. If your small town is ravaged by de-industrialization, don't worry. The Republicans will give you an opioid-epidemic crisis for that! So those "losers" can kill themselves on Oxy-Contin instead.

Great job, Republicans!

Kurt Schlichter reminds us that ding-bat leftwing crazies attract masses of stupids.

"You should not for a moment fail to appreciate the risk posed to your freedom by left-wing It-Fascists like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Beto O’Rourke. There’s an undeniable appeal of this kind of Potemkin Politician for the kind of morons that the Democrats count on at the ballot box. Sure, the Nitwit Naïf is ridiculously ignorant and dumb – she knows nothing and demonstrates no capacity to learn anything. Sure, Tex Kennedy is a meat puppet dancing on the strings held by his masters. But this is the same country where the voters elected Barack Obama, twice.

They can absolutely win power, which means the leftist elite that controls them could win power, and that means disaster for our country. Like an our-country-splitting-apart kind of disaster. So, we need to accurately assess the threat they pose and figure out how to fight it. We need to not fool ourselves into thinking that these two dorks are too goofy for the voters to ever elect, particularly if some Fredocon doofus whose dad used to be a mailman tries to play spoiler."

[...]

AOC and Beto are something entirely different. They will be protected by the media, and actively covered for. That’s because they are elite catspaws disguised as radical disrupters. Though they attempt to speak the language of outsiders, every single thing they propose is exactly in line with the desires of the elite establishment. Gun control? Check – yeah, the same people hating on the cops are also the same ones demanding that only the cops under the control of the elite have guns. Climate change? Check – gee, how can a carbon tax go wrong? Bizarre theories about race and gender? Check – sure, let’s turn our country into a crucible of social justice witch hunts that would embarrass the town fathers of Salem, assuming they identify as male. I wouldn’t want to misgender anyone who hanged women for imaginary crimes.

Haha. Really? You can name a Hillary Clinton crime? A prosecutor can't.

That's kind of how it works in America. I mean, unless you want to revert to mob "justice" like your Southern lynch-mobs used to do. "Lock her up!" chants seem to be of a piece with that.

Trump's lawyers (if he can manage to retain any - they seem to flee him quicker than rats on a sinking ship) are pushing the impeachment-before-indictment defense for a reason. They know how embedded he is with all this criminality. If Cohen acted on Trump's advice (which the tapes prove), then President Co-Conspirator is culpable also. That's just the tip of the iceberg.

He is running and always had run a criminal organization. His family "business" works like the mob.

What is he afraid that his tax returns will show? (Other than the fact that he's a fraud who created zero wealth other than what he funneled under the table from his daddy).

1. He repealed GLass-Steagall
2. DOMA
3. NAFTA
4. Don't Ask Don't Tell

And then there was his "Sista Soulja" moment - you know. Calling out the "uppity" black ladies.

Well we know one sort of person who would vote for Trump — you.

As for voting for Obama and then for Trump I would say someone anxious for hope and change who lost hope because McCain and Romney were clearly weasels and Obama/Clinton were clearly more of the same. Turns out change = Trump.

And look at how much better things are now that we have real change.

I suppose the only way you can vote for Trump again is if the Democrat candidate is Hillary again. Sad.

Meade I voted enthusiastically for every Republican in every general election since 1976. Until 2016, when I voted unenthusiastically for the Republican. I voted for Trump as the least-worst alternative. I still believe that he was the least-worst alternative, and that we are getting mostly competent selections as nominees for the federal courts. Because mostly, Trump has delegated that task and thank goodness that he has.

But you haven't helped me understand what sort of person votes for Obama, and then Obama again, and then for Trump. "Obama-Obama-Trump."

Does such a voter believe that the Affordable Care Act was good law and policy? Or not? Does such a voter believe that the Trump Tax Cuts are good law and policy? Or not? Does such a voter wish for more federal judges like Sotomayor and Kagan? Or more judges like Gorsuch and Kavanaugh? Is an Obama-Obama-Trump voter happy with the Senate's not hearing the nomination of Judge Garland? Or not? Who does an Obama-Obama-Trump voter want as an Attorney General? Eric Holder, or Jeff Sessions? (Or Judge Jeanine Pirro?!? How about William Barr? How many Obama-Obama-Trump voters could identify William Barr if we gave them 12 chances?) Where do Obama-Obama-Trump voters stand on international climate change treaties? On a border wall? On the Trans Pacific Partnership? On the Iranian Nuclear Agreement? On oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge?

Meade you've written some funny, some curious, some idiosyncratic things on this blog's comments pages. I don't ever recall you writing anything so inexcusably idiotic and noxious as, "McCain and Romney were clearly weasels." McCain was a decorated war hero, and had the most remarkable record of high-level bipartisan work in the United States Senate in a generation.
