Steve Uhr: if this was the only incident, you might have a point.

But this isn't the only incident. We have antifa, we have BLM, we have Portland rioters; we have Evergreen college leftists patrolling with baseball bats to beat people they disagree with.

The left is replete with violence over the last 8 months. Riots. Burnings. Beatings. Assaults, batteries, and now shootings--all celebrated and cheered on by your side.

Once is happenstance, twice coincidence. Third time is enemy action. We are at what, the 15th time? Face the truth: your side is as violent as the Brownshirts from Germany. And for the same reasons, too: to harass and intimidate.

Apparently, Steve has not heard that leftist students armed with baseball bats are roaming around the campus at Evergreen, hoping to encounter a hateful reactionary who thinks Bad Thoughts so they can pummel him or her into the PC frame of mind.

Straight out of the Cultural Revolution.

Brookzene, if you and other liberals are really and truly distressed about political violence being committed by your side, here’s what you could do: start denouncing antifa and these other violent campus radicals. Defend free speech. Tell them, “this is not who we are.”

Instead, what I’ve heard from Inga and ARM are jokes about leftist street violence and a lot of minimizing the threat. “ Oh, you’re just being snowflakes.” Yeah, gee, some Trump supporters got punched or hit over the head, what’s the problem? ARM thinks conservative speakers bring violence on themselves by daring to show up on liberal campuses, which is akin to saying that woman was asking to be raped because her skirt was too short

Liberal silence in the face of violence and, in some cases, their approval of left wing violence is not dissimiliar to the Muslims who would never commit acts of terrorism themselves, but don’t mind it very much when others do.

A little higher hit rate than that - 4 were wounded the Congressman, a staffer, and the two Capital Police in his protection detail (which he has because he is part of the Republican leadership in the House). Those two are the real heros, running to the sound of gunfire, and apparently successfully engaging the shooter with handguns, while he had a rifle. 50 meters may be an easy shot for a Marine with an M16, but is far harder with handguns.

So far, it appears that the shooter was using a semi automatic AK-47 variant (symbolic of his allegiances?) Which are supposed to be notably less accurate at distances than M16s (or AR-15s). Suspect that the outcome would have been much different with a shooter well trained on a more accurate semi automatic rifle.

Hodgkinson's photo shows he has thick glasses. Marked myopia. Probably not as bad as ‎the bug-eyed James Holmes (Aurora Massacre, schizophrenia) or the bug-eyed James Lanza (Sandy Hook Massacre, (asperger's probably morphing into schizophrenia).

All this stuff is almost certainly caused by inflammation in the brain, which can impair dopamine circulation to the eyes. Oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain is associated with many DSM psychiatric conditions.

"...Myopia does not cause schizophrenia, rather it is a consequence of the anatomical and biochemical changes that occur due to schizophrenia. The disorder is accompanied by multiple structural and physiological changes in the eyes, all of which could contribute to visual processing impairments, and altered visual experiences. Apart from anatomical and biochemical reasons, side effects of some of the medicines prescribed in schizophrenia could also contribute to myopia.

The fact that this idiot fired off a zillion rounds and managed only to get himself killed is a blessing, but it also shows how the internal contradictions of the Left will result in failure.

The Left hates private ownership of guns. This yahoo bought a gun but clearly couldn’t bring himself to go to the range and learn how to use it. That smacks too much of “toxic masculinity” something else the Left hates.

Except “toxic masculinity” is what wins wars and battles. In the history of the planet, no war has ever been won by assholes marching with candles and signs.

But today’s sheltered young Leftists, drawn largely from the pampered bourgeoisie, probably never got into so much as a schoolyard fist fight. Their rank-and-file contains a lot of trannies and fat women in pussy hats. Yet, they want to be street fighters. The video of the two young antifas who attacked 57 year old conservative commentator Andrew Bolt in Australia show what the problem is. Bolt decked one and kicked him in the nuts and they both scampered away. There are other videos of antifas getting in people’s faces, screeching, and then acting completely surprised when the person they are screaming at fights back.

Both Ernst Roehm’s Storm Troopers and the Commies who fought each other in the streets of Berlin in the 1920’s were genuinely fearsome working class thugs who weren’t throwing glitter bombs at people. They would have laughed their asses off at the antifa snowflakes, before beating them into paste.

The only reason antifa has gotten away with what they do is because they have confined their attacks to blue cities and safe spaces like college campuses and the cops have looked away.

I condemn this violence unreservedly. But as GOP members bemoan their inability to go about a sacred America ritual without fearing for their lives, I must point out that the vast majority of Americans cannot now go to bed, or get up in the morning, or go to work without the threat of GOP cruelty hanging over them. My Medicare! My Social Security! My country once more to be dragged into a war of political and profiteering convenience! Let's have some proportionality here! And let's have some civilized gun safety laws.

I think that a part of this may be that practicing with firearms is known to turn you into a dreaded alt-right fascist/conservative. Not sure if it is the shooting itself, or associating with all the right wing gun nuts at gun ranges. My guess is both. It seems to have worked with me - I did move further to the right after purchasing my first handgun, and esp, I think, after getting a concealed carry permit. Individuals like this shooter don't go to the source for their information or use critical thinking skills to identify logical fallacies... For them, it's all emotion-based snap-reactions driven by outrageously slanted shows and articles that outright lie to push a narrative and gain power.

To use one of Ann's comments, these people are purposefully obtuse. They actually believe Trump is Hitler in their bones, and feed their confirmation bias by only exposing themselves to "safe" spaces that re-enforce their hatred and self-righteous vitriol.

For those who aren't shooters, the AK-47 is the original "spray and pray" weapon -- the tolerances are deliberately loose, leading to poor accuracy but making it usable by people not well trained in how to field strip and clean it. As Nicholas Cage puts it in his deadpan style during the movie "Lord of War", the gun does not jam and ... is so easy a child can use it -- and they do.

The poor accuracy of the AK-47 and its derivatives is more a consequence of the inferior ballistic coefficient of the 7.62x39 cartridge and the short sight radius of the standard combat configuration than to its construction.

There are many myths about the AK platform that are extremely difficult to dispell, possibly due to the fact that US military lecturers have repeated many of them for decades. For example, the AR-15 platform is much more resistant to mud and dirt contamination than any AK or AKM, the exact reverse of conventional wisdom.

My guess is that she hasn't read Salon and Politico and WaPo enough and so doesn't know what to think yet. Once she has her talking points straight (I predict Gaby Giffords and mean stuff conservatives said about Obama) she'll show up.

"Look at the Wiki page "Assassination Threats Against Barack Obama" About 15. "Assassination Threats Against George W. Bush" 3. Too many unstable extremists on both sides of the fence."

You do realize that Wikipedia is not an actual source, correct? My son is not allowed to use it in coursework. I could go in today and change those numbers to something different. Sure, they would be 'corrected' so to speak, but by whom and by what references?

"Politically-motivated violence in America in owned by the left exclusively. The tools of the left are censorship, ostracism, beatings, and murder. On the right relies on honest debate."

You doubling down and laying more justification for your patriotic argument:

"it is abundantly clear that leftward political inclinations should disqualify anyone seeking to acquire deadly weapons for any purpose."

?

Very loyal to American principals.

That's not humor. I'm pointing out that that's really an unAmerican remark, that people with a certain political disposition in our country should not be entitled to their Second Amendments. That's not America, is it? Democratic Socialists shouldn't be allowed to have guns? What do you think?

No, I don't choose to let you squirrel off on this tack. How to handle the predilection for violence and mayhem on the left is a real issue. I'm willing to concede that taking your guns away is probably not a valid solution of the difficulty but that's not what it's about today.

Today, Brookzene, for you, is "My side sent out a hitter to start the Revolution today, it was a flop, how sorry do I have to pretend to be till we can do better next time?"

That's what I think. I think you want to do us. Slice it thin or slice it thick, you want to salami-slice your currently defined sociopolitical opposition into nullity. If I'm right, then you should never back down, never apologize, never regret, always double down, bring it on, go full throttle.

If instead it's "My side sent out a hitter to start the Revolution today, this was horrible and could have been much worse, things are getting out of control, do I own any of this and what do I owe/what can I do in the way of efforts to de-escalate?" Act accordingly. I'll wait.

You should consider the virtues of at least faking sincerity.

Or do what you want. it's only a blog and you can be whoever you want to be. Althouse likes what's bad, you can be as evil as you like and never be interrupted here.

So who are you? You don't have to tell us, you will surely show us.
