The 25-year-old man who leapt from the zoo monorail into the tiger enclosure...

... had — on his Facebook page — this picture of a tigress licking the head of a tiger cub.

The Daily News calls it a "crazed bid to kill himself."
“He’s amazing and he loves everybody,” said the victim’s sister, who declined to give her name. “I really don’t know what happened.”
The Facebook page is full of sentimental notions about animals and the environment:
An image of foxes with the message, “We have more to fear from other people than from other animals” was also posted Thursday. In other posts he promotes a vegetarian diet.

Another image posted Thursday bears the message, “We need to stop being victims and living out of fear. We need to stop preparing for disaster, instead to anticipate a glorious future.”
UPDATE: The Daily News has now aligned its reporting with what I'm saying above: "Mauled man wanted to be 'one with the tiger' and was not  trying to commit suicide when he invaded Bronx Zoo den."
[David] Villalobos said he even petted the 400-pound beast after it tried to drag him off — and that he broke a leg and ankle when he landed after leaping from the zoo’s monorail on all fours, [Paul Browne, the NYPD’s chief spokesman] said.

“No one should be surprised he landed on all fours considering his passion for cats,” Browne added.

I love that the Daily News article refers to this guy as "an animal nut". That's calling it like you see it.

It's being an idiot, a la "Grizzly Man."

Why is his sister referred to as "the victim's sister"? Don't journalists own dictionaries anymore?

If he wanted to make sure that he was dead, dead, dead he could have jumped in to the shark tank at the aquarium.

I feel bad for this guy. Not only is he not dead but horrible maimed and for the rest of his life he can't escape knowing what a crazy nut he was. While he won't win the prize he does deserve a second place win in the Darwin Awards.

OK, serious question: Has anyone heard from Ritzy Brazziere, aka Montana Urban Legend, aka...I can't even remember what he last called himself.

Ritzy, are you out there? Ritzy?

I wouldn't put something like this past him. But I would have guessed this would happen sometime in mid-November, and that it would have involved owls, rather than tigers.

There was a woman who somehow made her way into the lion enclosure at the National Zoo about 15 years ago or so and ended up as breakfast. However, if I remember correctly, she had a documented history of severe mental illness, whereas this guy appears to have taken all those Disney movies with cute talking animals to heart.

Note to Gaia lovers and PETA bleeding hearts: You might love Mother Nature, but she doesn't love you back. She's a mean old bitch.

Given the kind of indoctrination so prevalent today, that nature is sweet and wonderful, it's not surprising that mentally ill people like Grizzly Man and this guy foreground animals in their crazy worldview.

"Your wolf may love you but you can't trust him"

I had a friend with a "pet" wolf. It was a scary bugger, big, nervous, and constantly pacing. Bit his girlfriend's toe and she had to go to the emergency room. The wolf escaped several times and was eventually shot by a rancher. he previously had a wolf/domestic cross who was really nice.

Another female acquaintance liked coyotes, but they kept getting loose and raiding the neighbor's chickens. At one point the sheriff decided to solve the problem with a shotgun and managed to blow his car's antenna off while aiming across the hood ;)

There ought to be a category in the Darwin Awards for those who DESERVED to die for some act of incredible idiocy, but somehow didn't.
But serve the Darwinian gene pool cautionary purpose even better because, not dead and buried, they are living reminders to others of the depths of studity some people can go to.

IMO, MUL was one of the few liberal commenters here who had a brain, would make inciteful comments occasionally, and would even graciously cede a point or two.

But MUL died, leaned over too far and fell into a cage of bitterness.

Why is the suicidal maniac a victim? The zoo animals were doing what zoo animals do, the maniac came to disturb them with his stupid stunt, now they're the aggressors, he was a "victim". Geeze!

Are we going to call a suicide bomber a victim too? Come to think of it, where have those suicide bombers gone?

True enough about Ted Kennedy, but believing in the immaculate conception and the power of prayer does not cause one to end up in a hospital bed with permanent disablities, so that comparison is pretty damn ridiculous.

There are vegetarians, and then there's Vegetarians with a capital V. They are definitely loons. But I can see someone who decides not to eat meat but isn't part of a political moviement. They just find meat to be bad for you. Those people are wrong, but maybe not loons.
Meat is good for you people. Maybe not ONLY meat, but you need that fat and protein. I can see having vegetables as your primary food, but you can't do without meat completely. And animals are not equivalent to people (That's where the lunacy comes in).
Your dog may be mans best friend, and you shouldn't hurt your dog, but animals are still animals, not humans. They're not your chidden. They're animals.
Wild animals who have not been domsticated who eat meat view you as food.

I recommend those people don't watch the movie The Grey (with Liam Neeson). Because that movie will make their head explode. Basically it's a movie about a bunch of surivivors of a plan crash who are stuck in the wild with a pack of wolves after them. And those wolves don't play around.
It's a pretty bleak movie, and I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for shits and giggles. Maybe, though some of these animal rights crazies should watch it just to have their world view shattered.

The person who dies in a suicide is a murder victim. The murderer simply happens to be the same person. In this attempted murder, the tiger was the weapon.

Exiledonmainst says:

"believing in the immaculate conception and the power of prayer does not cause one to end up in a hospital bed with permanent disablities" is naïve.

First of all, if you don't believe in nonsense like the Immaculate Conception (which almost no Catholics understand), you may well go to hell and, second, many atheist kids have suffered and died in your hospital beds on account of the superstition of believing and praying parents (most prominently, Jehovah's Witnesses).

Actually, you don't have to die to get the Darwin Award, just shoot your pecker off like a young guy accidentally did last week. And you don't qualify for the Darwin Award if you stupidly kill yourself after already having bred, meaning most of the 47% probably don't qualify.

It is easy to imagine how one might convince himself that wild animals are friendly as long as he hasn't interacted with them. The wild animals, of course, are happy to dissuade him of that notion.

Now he knows better and can embark on a new, wiser phase of life.

First of all, if you don't believe in the concept of hell yourself, why are you bothered if someone else thinks you are going to a place you don't believe exists? There are Protestants who think Catholics are bound for hell. I, a Catholic (albeit a piss-poor one) don't believe them. So who cares, jimbino? You, obviously.

Secondly, please provide proof that "many atheist kids" have died at the hands of Jehovah's Witnesses. How do you know those kids were atheists?

My sister works for a Catholic hospital that provides a great deal of charity care for poor people. In fact, it was the Church who came up with the concept of hospitals.

Christ , you're as ignorant and vile as the Hatman on the subject of religion. (And I do not claim to be devout, but I recognize an ill-educated bigot when I see one.)

exiledonmainst said...

Also, Jehovah's Witnesses are a very small subsection of Christianity. Most Christians certainly do not hesitate to avail themselves of medical services.

It is entirely godless individuals who suffer under the delusion that Gaia is benevolent and kind and the animals are Our Friends.

jimbino said...

Ann Althouse says:

"The person who dies in a suicide is a murder victim. The murderer simply happens to be the same person. In this attempted murder, the tiger was the weapon."

Calling a person who kills himself a murder victim begs the question. A person who wantonly destroys his own property, breaks a lock to his own house or tattoos himself is no vandalism, burglary or assault victim.

I imagine, though, that if you circumcise yourself, you might be prosecuted for the illegal practice of medicine, but if a Jewish moil does it to a non-consenting atheist baby and sticks the member in his mouth, it's OK in New York.

exiledonmainst said...

"I imagine, though, that if you circumcise yourself, you might be prosecuted for the illegal practice of medicine"

Please do this to yourself and lop off an extra 2 inches or so just to make sure. (That ought to do it, I think.)

We certainly do not want you replicating yourself.
