snow-shoeing sounds tiring. Isn't X-country skiing more fun?
Snowshoes! I'm prophetic.
When I saw the post headline I thought: "Oh no ... another Tiger Woods hooker has surfaced."Alas ...
I like the photo. It reminds me of a lovely cake, in the moments before people start cutting into it and eating it - beautiful and (largely) untouched, but you know it's not going to stay that way. You admire it, circle it, there's this moment where you've finally decided how you're going to cut into it, and you bring down the knife, and there's no going back. But by then you're enjoying yourself too much to care.
That video does make me want to live in the far north for a few days. The purity of a covered in newness never before touched landscape intrigues me. We used to ski and snomobile in and around Breckenridge, Colorado and the memories are returning. Thanks for sharing.
It wasn't cold at all, by the way.In the 30s. Felt fine. We skied too today. Actually got sweaty.

Actually, on a more than freezing day, with no wind, it's fairly easy to work up a sweat. When I was a kid in Bryn Mawr, shoveling what seemed like 2 miles of walk around our house (we lived on a corner), I often had to open my coat, it got so hot. But, are those really snowshoes? I thought snowshoes looked like big tennis rackets. I know, Meade got the high-velocity James Bond ones with the JATO rockets cleverly concealed in the bindings. If that photo was taken near your house, you're lucky to have such a nice piece of woods nearby
What Althouse really needs is a helicopter with a tow line or a big fan strapped to her back.
But, are those really snowshoes? I thought snowshoes looked like big tennis rackets. That's the way modern snowshoes look.
Here are the snowshoes we got.Great fun!
I tried out my snowshoes in Ann Arbor, in the Arb today. However, there wasnt much accumulated snow, so, it didnt work out. Made me look like a fool, which my friends made sure I knew. :):)BTW, MSR makes great snowshoes. I have a couple of pairs of Tubbs snowshoes bought from Bivouac off Central Campus.

I still haven't gone snowshoeing yet, even though I've been thinking about it for a few days now. We got more snow last night and are getting more now. Perhaps I'll go tomorrow. Or maybe I'll break out the cross-country skis instead.word verification: pitti--what blogger thinks about my lack of any snow sports other than shoveling--or driving.
OT: The Mail excitedly wonders if a memo containing info that the Queen is to make Prince William a "Shadow King" means she considers him and not Prince Charles the future of the monarchy. No, it doesn't. She's a traditionalist -- it just means she's growing old and sees the need to escalate the heir to the heir's duties. Thought you guys might be interested in the link as Ann rarely posts about royals (thankfully).Cheers,Victoria

They are praying to the virgin snow on CSPAN right now ;)
Starry, starry night, portraits hung in empty hallsFrameless heads on nameless walls with eyes that watch the world and can't forget.Like the stranger that you've met, the ragged man in ragged clothesThe silver thorn of bloody rose, lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow
Thanks, Pogo. We enjoyed that.

He came to my little town last year, and sang this and American Pie. among others. Surely he must by now be either bored by or detest singing those same songs over and over again.Yet he gave an energetic performance, and it was unusual to see an older audience singing this shared hymn of youth in unison, a secular catechism.
