Yes, it's funny that the loss of choice was presented as a choice. What's really great about the Shuffle is how lightweight and small it is. But presenting shuffling as a great feature kind of makes sense: less is more and you're going to be wearing it while running around so you won't be fiddling with the controls and looking at a screen. And there less space for your music, so you sort your music into playlists in the computer. You can still play them in order, btw. You don't have to shuffle. I actually don't mind having only 1GB. It's perfect for me.

Forget the memory, it's the shuffle that counts. Whether it's 1 GB or 60, it's the shuffle effect that is the true breakthrough.
Shuffle as a breakthrough? I enjoy my Mac, but leave it to Apple to successfully ditch the directory and market _Shuffle_ as the primary feature.
