"Fat Beach Day... is being held to coincide with Pride month at Jacob Riis Beach in New York, a location deeply ensconced in the city’s activism space..."

I'm reading "New York’s Fat Beach Day gives plus-size people a space to be themselves/Jacob Riis Beach hosts the day of body positivity and fun, in the city at the heart of the fat acceptance movement" (The Guardian).

I didn't know that fat acceptance was part of what Pride month is about or that New York had something it wanted to call its "activism space."
... New York has, for decades, been at the heart of the fat acceptance movement. In the 1960s, about 500 protesters held a “fat-in” in Central Park, burning diet books and photographs of the supermodel Twiggy, to publicly encourage body positivity and liberation....
Jacob Riis Beach is named after Jacob Riis, the "Danish-American social reformer, 'muckraking' journalist, and social documentary photographer" (Wikipedia). There is some criticism of Riis, you know. This doesn't have to do with fatness. The people in Riis's photographs were skinny — poor people living in tenements.
Libertarian economist Thomas Sowell (2001) argues that immigrants during Riis's time were typically willing to live in cramped, unpleasant circumstances as a deliberate short-term strategy that allowed them to save more than half their earnings to help family members come to America, with every intention of relocating to more comfortable lodgings eventually. Many tenement renters physically resisted the well-intentioned relocation efforts of reformers like Riis, states Sowell, because other lodgings were too costly to allow for the high rate of savings possible in the tenements...

The harshest criticisms that Riis faced was for his depictions of Eastern European Jews.... Fried (1997)... argues that the undertone to [much] of Riis' work was “the image of Jews as alien, exotic, unassimilable race, and a people resistant to the promises of Christian universalism." Riis' written work about the Jews invoked anti-semitic tropes such as saying “money is their god.” Additionally, Riis saw the Jews as antiquated and mysterious. He called the area of the Lower East Side with the most Jewish immigrants, Jewtown, with a “omnipresent and unfathomable peddler” harking back to the trope of the Jewish usurer, and that entering a Jewish house of mourning meant “going back 2000 years."...

The Jews weren't the only immigrant group he stereotyped in his work in an effort to explain why these groups “hindered the growth of a uniform culture." In Riis's books, according to some historians, "The Jews are nervous and inquisitive, the Orientals are sinister, the Italians are unsanitary." For example, early on in his career he stated that “the Chinese must go” and then 20 years later “only as regards to the Asiatic we have made a flat verdict of exclusion” Riis also criticized Italian immigrants stating that they “reproduce conditions of destitution and disorder.”

Man, I hate Pride Month. Why should we be proud of the particular traits its increasingly incoherent flag stands for? It's like being proud of being right-handed or allergic to peanuts.

By the way, stonethrower, well done!

Look, I am not on this earth to mock people of size any more than I'm here to mock anyone else. But it's just not good to pretend that being overweight is either innate (I would argue for a genetic tendency but not for fat as a truly immutable characteristic), innately attractive, or healthy - and it's offensive to demand that everyone mouth these sentiments, just like everything else we're supposed to "celebrate" in this month of celebrating non sequiturs.

The alphabet mafia has gotten so complicated that it's usually abbreviated.* This makes it impossible to be sure who is included and who isn't. BUT, so far as I know, there is no F in the letter chain.

*Since the abbreviation is made by simply cutting off an indeterminate number of letters from the end and placing a "+" after the last included letter, this has led to some competition for who comes first. In Canada, it is 2SLGBT...+ because Indigenous pandering comes first over all other kinds of pandering.

XYZ "Acceptance" has become the left's ideological purity test. As such, conformity with such nonsense reveals either blind faith or a cognitive defect.

Fatness = unhealthy
Fatness = likely to die during surgery
Fatness = likely to have knee, hip, and mobility issues
Fatness = shorter lives
Fatness = unable to fit in vehicles or plane/train/bus seats

I propose this be redone as "Fatness reality check day," "Make an activist look foolish in public day," and "Mental illness call out month."

activism space

Sounds like "free speech zones", where the Constitutional Right to Free Speech was limited to certain areas by governmental organizations. Here, it seems limited to a time and place. Which probably works for those supporting Pride Month and Fat Beach Day, because both like being limiting themselves by certain identifying characteristics. Why not further limit themselves to a time and place?

Hello? Being fat is unhealthy. And being really fat is really unhealthy. Its why its called morbid obesity. And if you're a women and you have big gut you're unattractive and that's never going to change.

As for criticism of Riis, this sort of thing drives me crazy. Basically, they're asserting Riis should have lied about what he saw in the Lower east side. Or covered it up. Because NO criticism of Jews is allowed. Telling the truth about Jews that puts them in a bad light is NOT allowed. Telling the truth that might lead someone to think bad thoughts about Jews is NOT allowed.

This strikes me as insane and I have zero idea why any non-Jew would go along with it. But then I remember most 'muricans, don't read, dont think, dont have a religion, and don't have a country. They're just unthinking consumer blobs who live in the USA.

Pride month and "fat activisim" is what Feminism turned into.

Feminism was wildly successful.

Women had a good deal with society strictly enforcing monogamous marriage and two parent families. This gave women a path to fulfillment. They traded that in for work, loneliness, and single parenting with government support so they can be harem girls for the first 30 years of their life.

But women managed to prove why we can't have nice things. Similar to what the WNBA is doing to Caitlin Clark.

They are just doing the same thing with the LGB. They added the TIQ and + to make them toxic. The LGB had it pretty good but the leftists are ruining it for them too. Now they are associated with the pedos like Chuck.

Apparently fat people are now part of the fold... =D

I recently spent the hot part of the day at a water park on Jekyll Island, GA, with my two grandkids (10 and 12) and family. It could have been a fat acceptance day, for all I know; there was plenty of rotundity on display.

Equally off-putting was the tattoo "artistry" on display: UGH-lee! I'm guessing that a lot of the ink happened when these folks were younger than now, and that the piling-on of the fat since then resulted in shape distortion of those original images, often to the point of provoking "what-the-hell-is-that" questions. And of course, everything colorful that once was, is now just dull blue.

But the water slides were steep, fast and fun!

I take a lot of pride in NOT being fat. I live in a pizza rich environment. There are bakeries and pizza parlors on every street. Sometimes I get withdrawal pains when I walk by them, but I walk by them. It's truly amazing how good cheap food tastes and how it is everywhere. It really does take character and restraint to not get fat....It's easy not being a libertine. There isn't that much temptation, especially for octogenarians, but food temptations come at you from all sides at every waking moment. Gluttony is my last surviving vice, and I take pride in its mastery.

The bit on Riis reminded me of this article from 1908, I read a few years back. Quite revealing of the early NYC and immigration. Also, some proposed changed in policing that is now common practice.

FOREIGN CRIMINALS IN NEW YORK.
BY POLICE COMMISSIONER THEODORE A. BINGHAM.

When the circumstance is taken into consideration that eighty
five per cent, of the population of New York City is either
foreign-born or of foreign parentage, and that nearly half of
the residents of the five boroughs do not speak the English lan
guage, it is only a logical condition that something like eighty
five out of one hundred of our criminals should be found to be
of exotic origin. In no one police precinct on Manhattan Island
does the percentage of native-born heads of families reach 50?
the highest, 45.44 being in the West Side district lying between
Forty-second and Eighty-sixth Streets and Eighth Avenue and
the North River, and the lowest, 3.12, in the densely congested
East Side quarter, largely peopled by Russian Hebrews, bounded
by East Broadway, the Bowery and Houston and Norfolk Streets.
Wherefore it is not astonishing that with a million Hebrews,
mostly Russian, in the city (one-quarter of the population), per
haps half of the criminals should be of that race, when we con
sider that ignorance of the language, more particularly among
men not physically fit for hard labor, is conducive to crime;
nor is it strange that in the precinct where there are not four
native-born heads of families in every hundred families, the per
centage of criminality is high.

I think far too often, acceptance of something is assumed to be interest.

While BMI can be somewhat useful if you're already looking at an obviously out of shape individual, keep in mind the formula is simply:
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)2, if using metric units
BMI = (weight (lb) / height (in)2) x 703, if using imperial units
BMI is an estimate of total body fat and a measure of health risk

That last is only partially true, as the attached article states "Body mass index (BMI) is a tool that healthcare providers use to estimate the amount of body fat by using your height and weight measurements. It can help assess risk factors for certain health conditions. The BMI is not always an accurate representation of body fatness."

Power lifter at the gym daily. @5'9", 230lb = BMI 34 - obese
Office worker who sits all day @5'9", 230lb = BMI 34 - obese

When I was running my stunt show I was 6'1", 215lb = BMI 28.4 - overweight. The bank required everyone to take a physical and the tiny Indian doctor fed me those stats and suggested I lose 25lb, so I simply stood, removed my shirt and dropped my pants and said "Where should I lose the weight?" No response.

Doctors are just as prone to taking lazy shortcuts as anyone else.
