The sunrise view at 4:33 a.m.

IMG_6417

We got to the vantage point an hour and 3 minutes before the official sunrise time, but you can see the sunrise beginning. Nautical twilight began at 4:25, so that beginning of light makes sense. Compare the Northern Lights photos in the previous post. Those were taken at 4. So it was a very early morning for us on Lake Mendota today. Maybe we'll get out there again tonight. I'm seeing that they might be good. Clear sky predicted.

Talk about whatever you like in the comments.

Between April 15 and tomorrow, there was my son's birthday, my brother's birthday, and my birthday.

We intended to eat at one of our favorite places at 530, but hadn't the foresight to make reservations, so when we all got there (four people, three cars) we faced a wait of 40 minutes.

Not even my wife--the only mother among us--realized that there would likely be crowds at all the nicer places the night before Mother's Day. We ended up cobbling together some stuff from Fresh Market on the way back to our house, and my brother picked up some BBQ beans and slaw.

Speaking of which, do you married guys buy your wives gifts for Mother's Day? I don't, since she's not MY mother. For that matter do you married women expect gifts from hubby on the big day? (N.B. I'm pretty diligent about her birthday and our anniversary, and she has grown not to expect much on those festive occasions.)

"Clear sky predicted."

Last Sunday it was cloudy in the afternoon, but was predicted to clear at sunset. It was a new moon, so I packed up all the gear, drove 80 miles west to my current dark site, and spent the afternoon setting up the telescope and sundry equipment.

It cleared at 2am.

One of Ann’s best pictures. And that is saying something.

I didn't drive to view the eclipse, nor did I go outside to view the Aurora. I'm a lazy person.

I'll drive a thousand miles (and I did) for an eclipse, but I'll hardly get out of bed for a chance of the northern lights. I'm not claiming that makes any sense. Honestly, I did not think there was any chance of seeing the Aurora in northern Arizona, or I might have made the effort.

I suspect an early night at Meadhouse . . . may all your views be unobstructed tomorrow morn.

The Tax cheat got caught again. In 2008, he wrote off some $651 million in losses, declaring the Chicago Trump Tower worthless a year before the building opened. Then in 2010, he transferred the ownership of the building to a subsidiary and declared another $168 million loss on the same building - a double dip. Tax experts believe that adds up to back taxes amounting to $100 million.

Not mentioned in the NYT article, the monitoring of Trump's present books in conjunction with Tish James' big win for the State of New York has resulted in the discovery of a $50 million loan between Trump ledgers and the Chicago subsidiary that will require this note owed to Trump by Trump has to be written off to profit, producing even more taxes owed. And of course, penalties and interest will be tacked on top of all the above cheating.

Stormy Daniels contradicts her Trump testimony with her appearence on Bill Maher a few years ago.

In both tellings, Daniels said she was not raped and that the sex was consensual. Maher even joked that the sex was not enjoyable so it was "married sex." Sex isn't the issue, paying $130,000 to keep the sex out of the papers is what the trial is about.

I have a strange aversion to Mother's Day. I think it's because the post-Vatican II church always makes the mothers stand so the congregation can applaud them. Horrors.

I don't expect a present. (My dad always said the same about mom -- she's not my mother -- and mom agreed.)

Happy Mother’s Day to the host and other moms.

I got up at what was a normal time for me -- a bit after 3 a.m.

As you might imagine, I nearly always go to bed early. I try to stay up until 9, but often I don't. 8 is good enough. You can't be going to bed at 6 or 7. I try to keep it reasonable, but we're at the time of year when I often go to sleep before it's fully dark. I want to see the sunrise, and the sunrise is around 5:30 this time of year.

When you're retired, it doesn't matter if you don't get enough hours of sleep. You can just take a nap when you are tired. I used to feel it was weak to take a nap, but I like getting up when I wake up... if it's after 2 at least. If I wake up and it's midnight, I go back to sleep.

Now retired, I get up very early, 4 or 5AM. Do my reading, start on my to do list, eat lunch, take a nap. Play pickle 3 or 4 times per week. In bed at 9.

It appears I need a new knee, maybe both. Found an ortho doc who specializes in quick recovery. Waiting for a referral.

How evil! Trump wanting to control his messaging! Why he's a scoundrel.

No, the trial is about the D.A. Alvin Bragg with the help of "Judge' Juan Merchan trying to stuff 10-lbs of sh*t into a 1-lb. bag. This is a trial about business records masquerading as illegal campaign finance trial. The only problem for Bragg, Merchan and gadfly is NDA payments are not campaign expenses, they're legal expenses.

The NYT making an in-kind donation to the Biden campaign.

"The Times is pointing a finger at Trump here in this nothingburger of a piece that describes a case originating 16 years in the past, of which the publication admits the current status is "unclear." This is electioneering, not reporting. If their concern really was dealing with these kinds of loopholes and gray areas, they would be campaigning for scrapping the entire labyrinthian tax code and replacing it with something simple and intuitive - like a flat tax."

Gadfly tilting at windmills once again. Just like Don Quixote. Only gadfly's windmills are 500-ft tall and bird killers.

I doubt that's true from a health standpoint. One of the pleasant surprises of retirement is I routinely get a full nights sleep now. It's glorious.

No. It isn't.

How many times does this need to be explained to you people?

Is it because the whole thing is such a farce, you have to make up shit to try to make it work? Is that it?
