This isn't really news, unless the news is that Biden is sentient.

Or is this the news: Biden is a weak leader, bereft of ideas, capable only of "frustration" when met with an important challenge?

Obviously, the poll numbers are "dismal," and anyone in his position would feel bad about it. Why is this news? I expect my readers to be gearing up to opine that the news outlet in question — The Washington Post — is simply executing its own plan to induce Biden to give up running for reelection.

Let's read the article — "Biden said to be increasingly frustrated by dismal poll numbers/In one recent meeting he said poll numbers were unacceptably low and he wanted to know what his team and his campaign were doing about it." I'm just noticing that subheadline. It's hilarious (or tragic).

This is the top story at WaPo right now, but what's newsworthy (as opposed to stating the obvious)?

On Sunday night, the president and the first lady stopped by the campaign’s headquarters in Wilmington, Del., to have dinner with campaign staff.... The president, in brief remarks, told his staff that the election was bigger than him.... When leaving the offices, Biden told reporters who asked why he was losing to Trump in the polls that people were reading “the wrong polls.”

Publicly, Biden campaign officials and Democratic allies have downplayed the polls, telling supporters to largely ignore them. They argue the election is still almost a year away and polls are not predictive of the results, but rather a snapshot of the current moment. They say most voters are not paying attention to the election yet, and the polls will change once the race becomes a clear choice between Biden and Trump....

“The Republican primary could end quickly, and the general election could begin in weeks, not months,” said Simon Rosenberg, a Democratic strategist. “Given Trump’s noisiness and his ability to bully his way through the daily information wars, I think it’s really important that the Biden campaign move into general election mode as soon as possible. We’re not where we want to be. Some of our coalition is wandering and we need to go get them back.”...

So there's the idea that Biden has an "election mode," and he hasn't been using it yet. Maybe there's an old-timey idea that nothing can be done during "the holidays." In that view, Biden may break out into election mode in January.

Former congressman Conor Lamb (D-Pa.), who attended the president’s fundraiser in Philadelphia last week, said...  “I think a lot of activists feel that everyone they know is happy with the president.... They’re not understanding who is in the majority of the country that is dissatisfied and what to do to change their minds.... A lot of us are looking to the campaign for leadership....”

Looking to Biden — or just "the campaign" — for leadership? Biden says don't look at the polls but if you do and if they look bad, you're looking at the wrong polls. Those darned polls. They're so frustrating

Frustration does not strike me as a very presidential state of mind. Where's the leadership? Where's the substance?

AND: No sooner did I publish this post than I saw a New York Magazine article on the same subject.

Let's read "The Alarming Calm of the Biden Campaign/Inside reelection HQ, the president’s aides feel confident that the 2024 race is totally under control":

One Friday morning in November, a handful of Joe Biden’s top aides gathered in a Sheraton conference room in Chicago. Alumni of Barack Obama’s first presidential bid... had rolled out of bed to hear the Biden campaign’s leaders detail the effort to get the president a second term....

It was, in the words of one Democrat present, an “Oh God moment.”... [M]ore than one told me they couldn’t shake the feeling that for a sophisticated crowd, what they were hearing — the high-level outline of the Biden plan — felt obvious.
Another thought the Bidenites were starting to come across as “absurdly defensive.”
One somewhat sideways best-case interpretation came from a former senior Obama strategist: Maybe the Biden aides didn’t feel it was the proper venue for a deeper dive precisely because they were facing so many the-sky-is-falling questions — a rationale of “I don’t need to be with all these fucking smart-asses telling me I’m doing everything wrong.”...
While commentators and many strategists are aghast at Biden’s polling slide and desperate to see a course correction, the president’s aides at the White House and at reelection headquarters give every indication that they consider the election very much under control....
But one way to understand how Biden’s lieutenants can feel calm about his lack of enthusiastic support is that they can still win if Biden simply remains less objectionable than Trump to some plurality of the electorate that gets him to 270 votes. It’s worked before....

If the campaign has an unofficial motto, it might be “Calm the fuck down, trust the process, and vote for Joe Biden. One. More. Time.”...
In April, the campaign-manager job went to Chávez Rodríguez [the granddaughter of] the legendary labor organizer Cesar Chavez.... [Asked about] Biden’s age. Chávez Rodríguez... highlight[ed] his experience, character, and work in “so many communities throughout the country.” Then, appearing to surprise herself, she paused. She’d just been reminded, she said, of a recent conversation with a tribal chairman. She looked stricken: “What the chairman said to me is ‘Joe Biden has turned 400 years of hurt into 400 years of hope.’” To my amazement, a trickle of tears fell from her eyes onto the conference-room table....

This is the campaign manager!

I think the polls on dissatisfaction with Biden are probably accurate- no one sane really thinks the country is better off now than it was 4 years ago at this time of the year- so that buck stops on Biden's desk, even if he doesn't really work at a desk any longer, or do any actual work as President.

The polls on Trump vs Biden, however, probably are designed to ease Biden out the door- running Biden risks not retaking the House and holding the Senate- Biden has no coattails since mail-in-ballot fraud still hasn't been perfected for down-ballot races yet (it is a work in progress).

"move into general election mode as soon as possible"

Back to the basement? Less Joe is more? That worked once, but everyone knows the moderate uncle Joe shtick was phony.

"Some of our coalition is wandering and we need to go get them back.”

Well, part of the "coalition" consisted of anti-Trumpers, so you'll get them back when Trump enters the general phase. But getting all of it back will be tricky, since the coalition is now structurally split: between Fetterman border control liberals and prog open border fanatics, beween pro-Hamas supporters of jihadist terror and traditional supporters of Israel plus remaining Dem opponents of antisemitism.

"Where's the leadership? Where's the substance?"

Joe has in fact been leading the prog assault. The substance is all prog, all the time--on the green transition, blowing up the budget, opening the border, persecuting J6ers and Trump, forgiving student debt by fiat, tanking foreign policy and weakening the military, you name it. The Dem commentator is right: there's little for the average prog to dislike. Sure, Joe could demonize Israel a bit more, and the pro-Hamas faction will keep up the pressure, but other than that, Joe is a good prog. Which is part of the problem, since the coalition included nice women not totally on board with the agenda, particularly when abortion is off the table.

Whether or not Biden is sentient is not the issue. Biden has physically aged during his time in the White House so his cutback in campaigning is obviously necessary. So he should announce an immediate withdrawal from his reelection campaign.

On the other hand, Trump is showing signs of increased craziness and he is running to avoid jail time - but you would never know that from the essays posted here. He almost overthrew the government on Jan 6 and might well succeed next time - but he too could soon die. I can only cross my fingers and hope for a legal conviction and a bonafide conservative candidate to replace him on the ballot.

The most likely scenario is that Biden/Harris are pushed across the finish line by hook or by crook. After certification, Biden will resign, placing Harris as POTUS. It’s the only way Harris can get installed and it is imperative to team Obama that she be installed in order to continue the fundamental transformation of America.

I love the bit about the "all time high" US oil production. Production was skyrocketing under Trump when the pandemic hit, and has flat-lined during the Biden Administration, and when it finally, after three years, creeps above where it was under Trump, prior to the pandemic, it's an "all time high" Well it is, so what? It doesn't mean what it sounds like it means, it just means that Biden slightly took his foot off the neck of US production because he picked a war with one of the largest oil producers in the world.

And the reason for the cheap oil? Europe is in a recession that is looking a lot like it could become a depression. Canada is looking a lot like it's in recession, but they are cooking the books. But affluent Democrats all think that the economy is doing great, because they own their homes, and buying food is not an issue. But you know what? Allowing 6 million illegals into the country, giving them paperwork on the way over our border that makes them "asylum seekers" and gives them a right to housing, medical care, and to be hired, well, that increases homelessness, and cuts wages. But there are *lots* of jobs, just because it takes three of them to pay your rent? Don't be a spoil sport

Remember when Democrats used to care about working people?

---

"Cutback" from what? He campaigned hardly at all prior to the 2020 election. Remember the carefully orchestrated crop circles for "supporters" to sit in (exactly six feet apart)? The majority of the attendees at the very few events he held were staff, local politicians, and the media, and even those just numbered in the couple of dozen.

Biden has campaigned almost none to date for the 2024 election. Any appearance consists of him mumbling a few words in either a whisper or a shout and then wandering around aimlessly until someone guides him off stage. The White House and media then have to clean up his two minutes of comments so he can at least seem to make sense in the transcript later released.

To "cut back" Biden would need to retreat to the basement and do what he did in 2020 which was let the media do the campaigning for him with the exception of those few events.

Biden's main campaign message is "Trump and his supporters are literally Hitler". That's about it other than the lies about the economy now versus what it was when he took office. Meanwhile, Trump is drawing thousands of supporters at each event he holds and gaining more support from all minority groups.

I wonder which polls Biden wants the media to look at if not the ones at Real Clear. Does his campaign have internal polling that shows something different? Or, is his staff just hiding the polling numbers from him?

In perhaps the last true Democratic debate of all time, dunce Kamala sliced Biden with what should have been a fatal blow. Biden's buildout of green energy is aggressively inflationary. Spending piles of borrowed money to recreate energy-production facilities, that we already have. (It's worse than that, of course, because the green facilities perform poorly compared to their fossil fuel counterparts). Building these facilities are not productive. " (It's worse than that, of course, because the green facilities perform poorly compared to their fossil fuel counterparts). Building these facilities are not productive."

I disagree. IF you consider funneling trillions to your buddies "productive" things are going GREAT!

None of these polls and prognostications mean anything in the current world. The Left demonstrated its ability to swing any and all statewide elections in states where there are large, DNC controlled cities. (This was borne out most recently by the supreme court election outcome in WI.) It doesn't matter what the issues are, what the economic situation is, or who the candidates are. At this point, the DNC could substitute a lawn chair for Biden and it would win. National "divorce" or CW3. You chose.

Joe's mental and physical decay is plain for all to see. From his shuffling and open mouthed gaping, to his unintelligible responses, it's clear he's not up to running again.

The media, like soviet era propaganda, can only say so much and articles like this help prepare the ardent liberals who still read this crap that changes are going to be made.

Incredibly the regime that thought it was a good idea to try to imprison a political opponent like Trump are horrified its blown up in their faces, so their insertion of a new candidate needs to happen post haste.

My principle concern is that Trump uses the Carville playbook in the general election. The 2020 story is old news. I haven't looked at any of Trump's campaign rallies so I don't know what his message is yet. It is odd that we have a rerun of the 1980 election. I guess Democrats can't help themselves.

Reminds me of the kid who refuses to study, refuses to do the homework, then bemoans the D- grade.

Seventy years ago, Joe Biden literally was that kid.
