"Remote-controlled robots have been developed to enter and search the tunnels."

"Israeli engineers also have developed technology that uses acoustic or seismic sensors and software to detect digging, similar to the science used by oil and gas companies to detect oil reserves....  The battle to control and destroy this subterranean labyrinth, estimated at more than 300 miles, will be a key strategy for the Israeli military....  For these 'de-tunneling' operations, specialized units code-named Samur – Hebrew for 'weasel' – expect to squeeze through the narrow passages and find rocket assembly lines, stores of small arms and mortars and, deeper still, Hamas’ leaders’ lodging and headquarters – much of it probably booby-trapped with homemade bombs. They may also be searching for some of the more than 200 hostages taken from Israel who may be hidden in those same tunnels.... The fight in Gaza may bear some similarities to operations in Fallujah, or in Mosul, where U.S.-backed Iraqi forces flushed Islamic state fighters out of a tunnel network in 2014...."

Human "weasels" and robots... but what about dogs? I'm remembering the killing of al-Baghdadi and Conan the military dog.

Within [the Yahalom] branch of the Israeli special forces are sub-units such as Samur (“Weasel”) commandos, trained in subterranean fighting and equipped with ground-penetrating radar and tunnel-mapping robots. A canine sub-unit, Oketz (“Sting”), comprises dog-handlers whose charges are able to sniff out entrances.

“Military dogs can detect entrances and sniff out bombs within the tunnels. Dogs can go ahead of their soldiers and attack incoming threats — by, for example, biting [fighters’] arms so they cannot shoot,” [said John Spencer, chairman of urban warfare studies at the Modern War Institute and a former infantryman]....
[T]he IDF has favoured trying to destroy rather than penetrate the tunnels using bulldozers, bunker-buster bombs or even by pouring in wet cement — a tactic used to stop Hezbollah, the Shia Muslim militia, from building tunnels along Israel’s border with Lebanon during Operation Northern Shield in 2018.

This approach is similar to the tactics adopted by other armies facing insurgent guerilla fighters hiding out in tunnels. In the 1970s, the US relied on B-52s to carpet-bomb the Cu Chi tunnels when it became clear that other attempts to flush out North Vietnamese fighters from their jungle hideouts had failed. In Ukraine, Russia bombed the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol incessantly and waited until its last Ukrainian defenders had run out of supplies, forcing their surrender....

There are also "sponge bombs" — "a very simple innovation to seal a tunnel rapidly.... It’s not like they explode — they just expand, similar to industrial foam sprayed underneath homes to fix foundation problems. Say you pass a small manhole entrance and you want to move past it temporarily, because you never want to leave a tunnel behind you: this is one of the tools you could use."

ADDED: From "How Israel trains introverted ‘weasels’ to crack down on Hamas’s tunnels/'I have been in the tunnels, and once you go down you very quickly lose all sense of direction and all sense of time'" (National Post):
Soldiers who can tolerate the claustrophobic environment inside the tunnels are recruited to become “weasels.” IDF has determined that the best candidates for the job are those who are introverted and “disconnected.”
An officer explained that it takes a soldier “who can make that psychological distance from the situation … You have to be able to distance yourself, to turn inward.” A tunnel soldier compared himself to a fighter pilot: “Really, with all the gear you have to know how to operate; it’s … more complicated than operating an aircraft.”

If Arafat hadn't died in a French hospital and instead had been hung from a rope publicly, in Jerusalem, a lot of the past decade's jihadi activity might have been considered unacceptable by those perpetrating their atrocities.

Sure, use robots and knock out gas and any other novel ideas to attempt to secure the hostages and disable the Hamas tunnels. But prosecute the war crimes, show the world that these "martyrs" are nothing more than bloodthirsty thugs acting savagely, and punish them for their misdeeds. The tunnels in Gaza seem to be mostly interconnected, at least interconnected over a defined area. If not, they merely exist as bomb shelters and isolated defensive bunkers rather than as logistics and troop movement arteries. If the value of these tunnels is in their interconnectivity, I would expect the tactic of the IDF would be to chop them up into individual, standalone bunkers that cannot be supported by reinforcements brought in via other arteries and, thus, make them redundant as regards their original purpose. This tactic would also facilitate the rendering of those isolated sections uninhabitable by terrorists, e.g., flooding the isolated sections or using some type of thermobaric or other device to kill whatever terrorists remain or to collapse them from above. Alternatively, those sections could just be bypassed and starved out or revisited after dealing with more pressing issues in other locations within Gaza. Personally, I would also consider booby-trapping those tunnels to prevent their reuse if they could not be collapsed and permanently destroyed. IOW, this tactic would be similar to the US island hopping strategy in the Pacific during WWII and would likely result in similar tactical successes while requiring fewer assault troops and costing fewer casualties to accomplish. It would also permit a more thorough and systematic search for weapons caches and for hostages, although the hostages are secondary to Israel surviving and their deaths would be the terrorists' war crime, not the IDF's. The technical and tactical innovations mentioned in this article are helpful and could be employed to facilitate this "tunnel hopping" strategy. I suspect this is what the Israeli government has in mind when stating that this is going to be a long war - it would take time to dismantle the underground system. It would likely take less time to turn Gaza into a pile of rubble, but unlike the "Palestinian" God, the Hebrew God does not specifically authorize genocide. Regardless, the Gazans should be careful what they ask for: "from the river to the sea" is an Israeli option as well should they be pressed into exercising it.

The wild card in this game is intervention by the other players in the region, including Syria, Turkey and Iran when Hamas starts to get rolled up. If that happens, Israel would likely have to go nuclear. Pity that, but likely unavoidable given the alternative.

In the Great War, there was a whole separate little tunnel war, especially in the Vosges, and in the ACWABAWS tunneling was used at Petersburg (the Crater) and Kennesaw Mountain.

In Biblical times, sieges always included a lot of tunnel work. Even without explosives, undermining tall city and fortress walls could cause breaches.

But a whole complex of tunnels meant to be a fortress in itself, designed and constructed with modern tech, is a new thing in the world.

The IDF selects weirdos for the tunnel work. Are Hamas fighters natural tunnel rats?

Israel should announce that unlimited food, water and medicine will be allowed to pass through the Rafah crossing. Further, any non military appearing vehicle that is traveling south towards the aid will be spared, for 48 hours. Any northbound vehicle will be destroyed.

Egypt will never allow this, and Israel will be able to tell the rest of the world to STFU, it has done way more than required for "humanitarian" purposes. Israel can then declare North Gaza a free fire zone, including/especially the "hospitals" that Hamas uses as command headquarters and munitions storage depots.
Once the 48 hour travel period is up, the IDF can pincer north Gaza by clearing a zone along Wadi Gaza by air and artillery and gradually moving north while it continues to move west into north Gaza. North Gaza will be gradually laid waste until Hamas says "No Mas." Any tunnels that connect north and south Gaza will be detected and destroyed once IDF has control of the land around Wadi Gaza.

Likely outcome? Lots of dead Gazans, but all due to the actions of Hamas, who do not allow Gazans to take advantage of Israel's forbearance. Israel creates a desert of north Gaza, and calls it peace, at least for a while

I thought about the tunnel problem years ago when the first Hamas rocket attacks on Israel. In WWII the German army had an interesting solution that was never, to my knowledge, applied to a tunnel. Very high-tech at the time, the ironically named Golaith was a tiny, battery-powered tracked vehicle that could transport a powerful explosive charge across defended terrain to destroy viaducts, bunkers, barricades, and minefields. Early versions were smaller and used a wired remote control, whereas later models were larger, gasoline-powered, and wireless. The Allies captured many of them and often used them as toys.

The Hamas tunnels will not be the problem some journalists imagine, and they will be deathtraps for Hamas. Hundreds of the enemy will be buried alive when they are collapsed, or suffocated when the ventilators are found and destroyed. The fact that Hamas has come to rely on them shows how profoundly stupid the Palestinians truly are. The worst possibility will be for the hostages that may be confined in the tunnels, but their fates are the responsibility of their captors. The only way to fight and win is to count them as already lost.

Individual members of Islam have to see a way to retain their religion without agreeing with antisemitism before there will be peace in Israel. This has been done by Christians and and by many in the Middle East. One of the factors preventing this evolution is the social structure that grants cheap status through antisemitism: "Any Moslem is better than a Jew" which functions just as racism used to do: it granted cheap status to poor whites in the South by a hierarchy in which any white was above any black. Economic prosperity based on the work of the middle class makes cheap status seem unreal within societies. This is why we can hope to see Hamas fail. But economic prosperity for a limited group based on the use of power to rip off "the masses" will be accompanied by the use of cheap status to excite and control "the masses" by sanctioned brutality. And as a matter of fact Islamic law does not allow the attacks on women and children Hamas committed so that a better society than the one mow existing in Gaza could easily see itself as returning to real Islamic principles. It's in nobody's interest to keep Hamas in power.

Sorry, I couldn't help but think of Sponge Bomb Squarepants.

Seinfeld for me: Those tunnels are definitely sponge-worthy.

The NYT actually had a piece yesterday ("Gaza's Vital Tunnels") arguing that the tunnels, in addition to aiding the terrorist activities of Hamas, are important civilian infrastructure. And of course they put some blame on the Israelis:

Israel created further incentive for tunnel construction by tightening the blockade of Gaza after 2007. The main rationale for the blockade was to keep out weapons and related material, but Israel’s definition is so broad that the blockade also restricted the flow of basic items. In response, Gazans have used the tunnels — which extend south into Egypt — to smuggle in food, goods, people and weapons. Some people refer to the hundreds of miles of tunnels as “the metro.”

Left unsaid, of course, is that had Gazans opted to use the Israeli withdrawal to create a functioning economy rather than install Hamas in power, the blockade and the tunnels would have been unnecessary.

Tae,
https://halaladviser.com/is-dancing-haram-or-halal/
"Dancing’s connection to music—generally forbidden in Islam—is another factor that leads many Islamic scholars to view it as haram. The majority of dances require music to be performed, and our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) forbade the use of all musical instruments other than the fiddle. Dancing is therefore considered to be against this rule.

Dancing may also be considered as a diversion from Islamic beliefs and values. When someone is dancing, their attention is frequently on themselves and the music rather than on Allah or God.

This may further alienate a person from their faith and cause them to turn away from Islam’s teachings. As a result, some believe that dancing has the ability to cause someone to lose their religion.

Islam has another issue with dancing since it might cause those who are not mahrams to mix with people of the opposite sex, which is against the law. Since dancing frequently entails seeking the favor and pleasure of others in addition to Allah, some people believe that it lowers a person from the dignity that Allah has given to them.

In Muslim gatherings when both sexes are seated together, men and women are not allowed to dance in front of one another. Although some people might think it’s normal for guys to dance in front of ladies, it’s really against the law. This is due to the fact that it may result in improper behavior and relationships between the sexes, which is against Islamic beliefs.

Given that it might result in improper situations and interactions among women, dancing is viewed by many Islamic scholars as sinful conduct by women. This is especially true for guys, as such dancing might be viewed as a sort of gender-imitating behavior that is against Islamic beliefs."

Israel holds the land because they can.

If the Arabs can take it, then it belongs to them.

This has been true for the past 40,000 years.

What makes you think it's any different today?

Wishing something doesn't make it so...

No Jew wants to live in Palestine since it is a mythical land that doesn't exist. But plenty do emigrate to Israel, their historic homeland. People who dispute this are denying the reality in front of their eyes. Why do you think you have the right to tell other people in other lands how to live? Now you're the ugly American.

I'm still waiting for one of you to explain how a Jew in Brooklyn, who's never left New York, has more of a right to live in Palestine than the Palestinians who've lived there for centuries.

Something like 3 million Palestinians live in Palestine now. Israel is 20% Arab. Sovereign nations (except the US when Democrats are in the White House) get to set their own rules for immigration. The Palestinians have been offered their own state at least three times, including in 1948 when the partition plan would have given them much more territory than they have now. They've rejected the offers every time in favor of hoping to exterminate the Jews living there. They (along with 5 Arab countries) launched a war against Israel and lost.

This has been explained to you many times, and you still ask the same question. That's known as trolling.

Crack thinks "Palestinians have lived there for centuries"

History says otherwise:

Israel was not created on Arab land. It was created the same way Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Syria were created: out of the ruins of the Ottoman Empire. The Turks are not Arabs let alone “Palestinians” – a national identity which did not exist at the time of Israel’s creation. The language, religion, culture of the Arabs around the Jordan River is identical to that of the other Arabs in the Middle East. The land on which Israel and nations like Jordan were created was controlled by the Turks for four hundred years before the creation of the Jewish state. There was no movement for a nation called Palestine in all that time.

Jordan has a population seventy percent of whom identify as “Palestinians.” They are ruled by a Hashemite minority. There is no Palestinian campaign to free Jordan from its occupation by Hashemites. Nor was there any ‘Palestinian’ campaign to free the West Bank when Jordan controlled it or Gaza when it was under Egyptian rule. The Palestinian movement is a Nazi campaign to destroy the Jewish state and eliminate its Jews. This is the mentality behind the beheading of Jewish babies and the brutal murders of entire defenseless Jewish families.

The actual invention of the Palestine identity for the campaign against the Jews did not take place until 1964 in the West Bank and 1967 in Gaza – 16 and 19 years after the creation of the Jewish state. The newly invented nationality was the brainchild of the KGB and the Egyptian dictator Nasser whose armies spear-headed the 1948 war to destroy Israel at its birth.

Crack: Where is this Palestine that you speak of as I don’t see a country by that name on any modern map? No one has been alive for centuries, the Jew in Brooklyn, the Palestinian in Jordon or anyone anywhere else. So why are you worried about a person who has never left Brooklyn moving to a country that doesn’t exist? If you are referring to the right of Israel or any other country to determine who has a right to legally enter or remain in their territory it’s called “the law.”

Crack is so invincibly historically ignorant, he literally believes there were no Jews in the Middle East for thousands of years and they just popped up in 1948.

He literally believes that...and he's made it clear that is a belief driven 100% by his racial framework of "whitey Jew bad" and "brown Arab good".

As we speak, the Egyptians are making it very clear they will fight tooth and nail to keep the despised "Palestinians" out of Egypt.

Which makes perfect sense since (Crack, you can stop reading at this point since you will just become even more confused than you already are) El-Sisi had to step in and remove the obama-supported Muslim Brotherhood thug Morsi who launched a campaign of actual genocide against the few remaining Christians in Egypt as well as attempting to turn Egypt into another Iran (another outcome obama/biden desperately wanted).

And, of course, Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood so it all becomes a bit clearer now, doesn't it?

And as for ANY possibility of the Jordanian Hashemites stepping up, you can forgetaboutit. The Jordanians will not allow their gifted British-created kingdom to morph into another Lebanon.

Responding to Crack at 2_06:

The Azzam Pasha quotation was part of a statement made by Abdul Rahman Hassan Azzam, the Secretary-General of the Arab League from 1945 to 1952, in which he declared in 1947 that, were a war to take place with the proposed establishment of a Jewish state, it would lead to "a war of extermination and momentous massacre which will be spoken of like the Mongolian massacre and the Crusades."

Took about 10 minutes in Wikipedia. You aren't worth more of my time than that so anything else you want you can stop being lazy long enough to look it up for yourself.

They’re better off trying that than pretending that they should just try to do a better job of living with those tyrannical sociopathic jihadis.

If Professor Minister Louis Farra-Crack really thinks this war has improved Palestinian or Iranian morale then they must have even less self-esteem than he does.

hpudding said...

Professor Minister Louis Farra-Crack actually endorses expelling either all Israelis or at least the Jewish Israelis from their country. Presumably this would also include 164,000 Israeli Jews of Ethiopian descent. Racist? What can be said… victimology is a strong drug. If it requires an anti-POC on POC assault that’s just because Palestinians have decided that they have to be the ultimate victims in everything and even more POC than safely repatriated Ethiopians! And presumably Farra-Crack agrees!

Clearly he’s really thought this through. All feelings, though.

Modern warfare is governed by the maxim, "If it can be seen, it can be hit. If it can be hit, it can be killed."

You don't make tunnels to fight in. You use them to hide and move unobserved. If enemy ground forces find your tunnels, you gtfo. Otherwise, you are providing your own grave.

Existence is a low bar. What's the point if you've lost the capability to rape, burn, behead, and shoot Jews in their homes and at a music festival? Quality of life has to count for something.

Good grief. Do you have any hope at all of talking intelligently about any of this or does it always just come down to racialiizing it? And are any of your links to rational or factual content, or are they all just a bunch of mouthing off the same way you do and accuse everyone else of doing?

And since you never answered it the first time, what about Israel’s 164,000 Ethiopian Jews? Do they have to all be expelled and uprooted in order to help the poor oppressed Palestinians feel better about themselves, too? Is that also a part of “the struggle?” Is that how you export your woke justice program halfway around the world from sunny California, based on what you apparently learned from gangs in LA?
