I must say, though, a lot of Biden 'rallies/appearances' had poor turn out (Covid not withstanding) and look what happened.

I read “an embarrassing bust” as a trap set up by law enforcement to catch a fresh batch of Trump supporters.

The only upside I can think of is that whatever Trump support there is they are keeping it to themselves, a lot more disciplined than they did in 2016. Btw: The dominion lawsuit against FoxNews did not prove a clean election. Ballot stuffers had additional days and perhaps weeks to work with. The pandemic conveniently broke down chains of custody.

Meanwhile, back in reality….the rally was just postponed for weather. Will still happen with lots of Trump fans in attendance.

I really do think we need some more of these busts to get him off the stage. His own ego is fed at the rallies, and his own hurt ego is the only thing that will keep him from continuing on (I think).

A couple comments down in that Twitter thread, someone posted weather forecast made that morning:

"(Des Moines, IA) -- Scattered severe storms are possible Saturday in the Des Moines region. The main threats are large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes according to the National Weather Service. Heavy rain is also possible, and may cause flooding."

Maybe that's why Trump campaign cancelled.

FFS, doesn't anybody pay attention to actual facts anymore? There were tornado warnings in effect so of course cancelled. Inclement weather, what BS!

Sioux Center should have honored Des Moines' tornado watch and severe weather warnings even if it didn't apply to them. Who cares if they are over 160 miles apart? The next time there's a severe weather warning in Nashville, I'm heading to my basement in Louisville. Or is the takeaway, if it's sunny in Nashville and the sirens are going off here, I should just ignore them?

n.n said...

The threat of severe weather... uh, [catastrophic] [impulse] climate change. Perhaps it would have been better for people to be trapped for the sake of keeping up appearances.

There are weather issues. Iowa often has severe Spring flooding problems and not just at the Mississipi river.

Steven Enjoys Fiction said...

Ann, the Des Moines Register posted yesterday, May 13th, that a tornado watch was in effect for 42 counties in Iowa. Polk County, where Des Moines is located, was one of the affected counties. There was at least one confirmed tornado on the ground in Knoxville, IA, less than 40 miles from Des Moines.

I don't know about you or others who may not care for President Trump, but canceling an event because of TORNADOES seems prudent. Clear skies don't mean no danger. Or do you believe the National Weather Service was giving him cover for poor turnout? IMHO that's not very likely.

If there were masses of people - the show would have rolled on.

Again - Trump made a fatal mistake when he dumped on younger viable candidates. Democrats do not do that. They show restraint and discipline. (To make matters worse for Trump - Trump's Ever-loyalists pile on same types of tired insults... "Jeb!, Globalist! Ryan! You're all McConnelltards! blah blah blah". Those insults push Trump's support downward. I guess that is the goal in the desperate flame out stage.
Not that the loyalists understand. They don't. It's Trump or bust.

Funny - with Trump it's only 'bust' as the left know how to harness Trump-hate-for-votes. (real and fake)
Desperation... on both sides gets us more mob-husk Crook Joe.

Another media lie. Trump cancelled due to a warning. Guess Trump "gave 'em the ammo" by obeying a storm warning. That Trump is so dumb.

Gosh, if only we could nominate De Santis, then the Media would leave Republicans alone. They'd never attack DeSantis. Because Trump is the problem, not the MSM and the Democrats. The MSM just wants to love republicans and get along.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

We get some pretty nasty afternoon thunderstorms here (no tornados, thankfully) in the spring. The weather forecasts often warn of them the day before. The day starts clear and the storms develop in midafternoon. Or not- sometimes they don't. Perhaps that's what happened here and rather than risk problems, it was decided to cancel the event?

Or it could be more TDS. You decide.

LOL!

I checked the weather yesterday when the announcement was made that the rally in Des Moines was cancelled. That part of Iowa was under a tornado watch by the National Weather Service. I even checked the radar map on Weather.com- it showed massive storms forming just to the southwest of Des Moines by early afternoon. The rally was properly cancelled. As for the photos in that twat- I don't know how long after the cancellation they were actually taken- if the rally is cancelled, people who showed up way early usually do leave at some point.

In any case, you can watch this.

Hunter Biden's tax payer funded Hooker: "Trump made a colossal F up. He crapped all over DeSantis. You don't crap all over a popular and successful governor and future candidate just because your delicate old man ego cannot take it."

Confession thru projection.

DeSantis is going the way of Scott Walker (I wont compare DeSantis to Jeb because that would be grossly unfair to DeSantis).

DeSantis bought into the promises of his Team GOPe/globalist funders and advisors that assured him Trump would be taken out by the lawfare setup efforts, thus clearing the path for DeSantis to use his early Jeb!-like early support advantage to waltz to the nomination.

Essential to that plan, of course, was keeping DeSantis at arms length from team globalist while fighting the anti-woke battle because his funders wont allow DeSantis to cross certain lines: see the DeSantis Ukraine walk back.

But so far the combined Dem/LLR-dem/GOPe/deep state effort has failed to take Trump out (many shoals still lie ahead though) or reduce Trump's core support and the DeSantis team has not been capable enough to walk a fine line to keep DeSantis viable in this very touchy environment...just like they killed off Walker in 2016.

The DeSantis PAC letter released after the Townhall/Debate was pure Lincoln Pedophile Project "quality" "work"...

...and DeSantis is now receiving a mere itty bit of the coverage and vetting a republican candidate for El Presidente Grande Maximo receives....and DeSantis is not handling it very well, except for the anti-woke stuff which is DeSantis' most naturally comfortable area of engagement.

Bottom line: the jig is up. The word is out. Can't put the genie back in the bottle.

Can DeSantis still win the nomination?

Yes.
1) If his GOPe/dem/establishment/globalist/lawfare team takes Trump out DeSantis might win the primary but would lose the general by a landslide under those conditions of course, but we are talking about the primary.

2) If DeSantis goes as strong populist on economic/foreign trade as possible and hits Trump even harder from the populist right on "freedom" re:Covid lockdowns/vaccine mandates and immigration.

But we all know the DeSantis funders would never allow number 2 and the DeSantis congressional voting record is pure Paul Ryan Acolyte...and DeSantis hasnt even begun to be attacked on that yet.

But yeah, Trump cancelling an outdoor event under a tornado warning shows how dumb and terrible he is!

DeSantis backers not exactly projecting confidence with that MSNBC-level hot take.

I know, and I presumed my readers knew. That's the background level of understanding required for this post to make sense. I didn't think I needed to add instruction! The tweet contains the line "Note the lack of severe weather, which was cited as the reason for cancellation." It is what it is. DeSantis did an event, despite the weather. There's a question of why, really, did Trump cancel.

See "DeSantis Impresses in Iowa, Showing Up an Absent Trump/The former president canceled a rally in Des Moines, citing a storm warning. The Florida governor made the most of his rival’s absence, as DeSantis allies taunted Mr. Trump."

cfs said...

Since rally workers such as sound technicians would have had to been working in preparation for the rally at the time the town was under a tornado watch/warning, I assume the rally was canceled due to weather reasons.

People act as if a rally can be just turned on or off much as a light switch. Workers would have had to be there on site working hours before the rally started. If Trump had not cancelled the rally, the same people criticizing him today would be posting screen-captures of the weather forecast, interviewing meteorologists about the dangers, and blaming him for putting people's life at risk.

Oh Yea: "What planet are living on? The press is crushing De Santis and everything he does because they a know a younger nominee with a real track record is the greatest threat to the doddering old Biden."

The media is holding back on DeSantis' congressional record until they need to break it out. They are only fighting him on the woke stuff and doing their "the next guy is even more Hitler-ish" prep work.

DeSantis hasnt seen nuttin' yet. If they take Trump out as they are desperately attempting to do, with lots and lots of GOPe support, THEN you would witness the power of the democratical media fully operational death star against DeSantis.

And what ammo has DeSantis provided?

Aggressive support for TPP and TPA...just like Hillary. Think that might get some play in the industrial midwest?

DeSantis voted 7 times to raise the age of Soc Sec and Medicare to 70. Think that will get some attention? There goes grandma over the cliff!

DeSantis was an aggressive backer against the ethanol subsidies/requirements so a DeSantis probably moves Iowa back into a tossup unless he does a transparent flip flop. (This one seemed topical)

Did DeSantis discuss his previous opposition to ethanol subsidies/requirements during his "massively successful" stop in Iowa yesterday...even though HBTPFH tells us he is not yet candidate yet...with the DeSantis For President bus idling in the parking lot.

DeSantis backers: do you know what % of Iowa corn is used for ethanol production? Since none of you do I'm wagering (Begley might know, he's in NE) here it us: 60%-ish.

There are other areas of policy weakness but thats sufficient for now.

It doesnt matter if any reader here agrees or disagrees with some or all of these DeSantis on the record policies and votes. I agree with some of them. The point is DeSantis hasnt faced 24/7/365 across the board hoaxed up attacks on ALL of them. Not even close.

They will crush DeSantis amongst the rural/blue collar voters that the GOP needs long term and the more DeSantis pushes the anti-woke button to make up for the economic/trade record the more he will lose the votes of the only swing voters Team GOPe leadership cares about as they continue to stare in the rear-view mirror instead of forward: the democrat-adjacent, strongly pro-abortion pro-trans white educated suburban woman.

Well, thats the kind of thinking you get when its Ryan and Rove and Ken Griffin et al in your corner.

A mistake was made alright.

DeSantis bought into Team GOPe proposed shenanigans and visions of sugar plums after they dazzled him with hundreds of millions in donations and promises of a clear pathway to sucker those dumb deplorables while serving the establishments needs all the way to the nomination.

I can't fault DeSantis the man for buying into that. Try and picture yourself with these Titans of power and influence promising you the oval office. What would you do?

But DeSantis the savvy politician, and he is one, should have remembered clearly the events of 2016 and DeSantis should have been smart enough to see how astonishingly out of touch the GOPe is with the base that the GOPe despises...and that base will no longer buy the "promises" of that leadership.

Ever again.

Team DeSantis is just beginning to feel the heat of declining poll numbers far below what was expected by DeSantis funders and advisors at this point and DeSantis has shown some of that personal clunkiness, not too much since he's no Jeb, that gives funders a little bit of pause.

Thats why the language and "logic" of the DeSantis supporters is basically equivalent to MSNBC stuff.

Its the vibe of a campaign that is already off the rails without a clear path for getting back on track and a national campaign staff that is desperate to take us back to 2004.

Actually I think “the question” is why did Desantis risk disaster by not canceling the rally. It is fortunate no Iowans were harmed by Ron’s risky move but attendees were at much greater risk than Desantis’s team that waited in a safe place until it was time to hold the rally. Not the worst example of executive decision making but a peek into Desantis’ tendencies. I generally like Ron and am happy it worked out but that was a foolish move and my impression is he did it to contrast himself with Trump. Budget resolutions are symbolic statements of a policy preference; even if they pass, they do not become law.

In early March, DeSantis told Fox News that he would not "mess with" entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare.

He stopped on the other side of Barneveld because it suddenly was "pouring buckets" and the windshield wipers were useless. He also said that he couldn't hear the rain pounding on the roof of the car. I was at home, pacing because I wasn't sure if I should wake up my toddlers and take them to the basement. The lightning was continuous. (It makes me nervous to this day.) Hubby met a ton of emergency vehicles just past Ridgeway. The next morning we found out Barneveld was basically wiped out. What an amazingly well timed post for Mother's day! Weather is an all purpose excuse, and there is nothing climate change cannot accomplish!

My MIL died last month, at age 93, from long term vascular dementia. My wife, upon notice of MIL's downturn into coma, flew from TX to CO and got there before her mom died. My SIL had gone out of town for the week and did not get back before her mom passed. SIL blamed a western CO snowstorm for keeping her from driving back to town in time to be present for her mom's death. Reasonable, yes?

SIL raged like a maniac and cursed like a sailor at my wife (a counted 12 FUs) upon seeing her at a luncheon memorial service given by the assisted living home, on the basis that my wife called only 14 hours before their mom died, and weather prevented her 7 hour drive back for a whole day. SIL lives 30 minutes from the assisted living center, and my wife didn't know she wasn't in town that week. Reasonable, no?

Family is the gift that gives and gives and gives, and then gives some more, without the need for thanks! And bad weather is the excuse that needs no further explanation!

What does the canceling show. In real political terms not the spin.

1. Trump is the front runner. He can afford, politically, to cancel rally's (irrespective of the "cause" - attendance or weather).
2. DeSantis is behind. He needs voter interaction. He can't afford to cancel rally's
3. Trump is not nimble. He can't shift his campaign apparatus on a dime anymore like he could in 2016. This is a weakness.
4. DeSantis appears to be nimble. I read that he added an event after Trump canceled.

Does canceling one rally really impact the race? No. But it may show tht Trump is saddled with infrastructure that would allow another candidate to be inside his decision loop. This is not traditionally Trump's style. He's the outsider usually.

Can you believe this is really these idiots fallback talking point?

Incredible.

4. DeSantis appears to be nimble. I read that he added an event after Trump canceled."

I think you might need to show your work on these 2 items.

Embarrasing Bust? I thought there was going to be a tragic exposure of an Iowa teenagers wardrobe failure. Hunter? are you there?

As opposed to a permanent one?

Every tornado watch I'ver ever encountered in my 67 years has been temporary.

It looks like that here sometimes in the spring. And then- an hour later, there's thunder and lightning and hail that prompts alerts that break into radio broadcasts telling people to stay inside and away from windows.

I would suppose adding tornados into the mix might be something people could possibly be concerned about.

Temporary defines all tornado watches. If this guy actually lived here, he would know there is rarely just a single tornado watch. The come in a series as the storm (usually) moves from South East to North West, and new area are added to the watch and other areas have theirs expire. It is not unusual for the same town to catch 2 or three watches in the same storm system.

Sunshine is common for tornadoes. All long term Iowans have several Tornado personal stories.
My 1st was in the 60's, 2.5 miles South of our farm, killed an older couple that were 2cnd cousins to us. A great sunny warm balmy Palm Sunday, early afternoon. This was before warning/watch technology.

It's simply amazing how absolutely anything associated with Donald Trump can turn supposedly grown adults purple, and cause them to spew absolutely bonkers things - either Pro or Con. I've never seen anything like it, in politics, and only read about it in connection with Huey Long.

Did the Twitter keyboard expert manage to discuss this event outcome with anybody that had planned to attend, just curious. There were plenty of pictures of an empty fairground, which could just have easily been taken a day before the event. Or was it such an incipient disaster that the reporter is on record saying that nobody planned to attend, therefore it was cancelled? Or, is there a weather-delay re-schedule in the works? Such basic information, unaddressed. Conclusion: 'Unserious'

Yes, actually, Trump is strong like a bull. He has lived his life making deals in the hardest town in the world and came out on top most of the time. He has won bigly. He shames his critics as impotent weaklings.

Lone injustus claims to live in Iowa, I lived in West Burlington for many years and have kids still there. I will make note when lone justice claims to live somewhere else. People in Iowa don’t like to be fucked with.

Awful quiet around here now Leland. Perhaps your fact cyclone did in fact pierce the very thick resistance to reality.

Thanks Mike. The data was a bit easy to find. I've been following the storm chasers quite a bit this year, and while I knew Friday was busier for them in Nebraska (congratulations to Reed Timmer intercepting a tornado there), Saturday was still busy enough for at least a half dozen to be in Iowa (and some more in Oklahoma).

It is interesting how much people want to believe and make others believe Trump is lying that they will go out of their way to fabricate nonsense that is so easily factchecked. They got away with this on Twitter in the past, because they could ban those that would factcheck them. That's never been the case at Althouse, so why come here and lie?

Well, Hunter Biden's Taxpayer Funded Hooker is still popping in. Not to challenge Leland's facts of course, since HBTPFH only deals in weird emotion driven outbursts and not facts.

Hey Hooker is the sky still blue in your world? Any after-action report on Iowa? Bueller? Bueller?
