The North Korean Supreme People's Assembly met to pass laws to "spruce up the country into a beautiful and civilized socialist fairyland."

Reuters reports, quoting the North Korean state news agency.

ADDED: "Fairyland" strikes us as absurd, but it must be a translation. What perhaps they didn't notice is that it doesn't simply mean a beautiful place. It means — when it's not literally the realm of the fairies — a place that is beautiful and insubstantial

By the way, there's a place in Wisconsin, in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, called Fairyland. It's an "old growth hemlock hardwood forest situated on the shore of Lake Namekagon at the foot of a prominent interlobate moraine."

What are they going to do? Whitewash the bodies.
It's already a socialist fairyland. Only the fairies are evil and they eat people.

Well, as long as the North Koreans continue to kill those fellow subjects who are failing to be supportive of the Kim regime, they'll be very recognizable as the right bastards they've always been, fairyland or no.

it's About Time! No one wants to go to the People's Republic now; what with all the fat slobs lazing around idling and all wearing different clothing. If they could just Impose a little more order..

I'll go back to my cave now.

A fairyland, you say?

LGBTQ people can now vacation there.

If they don't mind being killed, of course...

Fire up Google Earth and fly virtually into Pyongyang.

THERE IS NOBODY THERE. There simply are no (very, very few) signs of any life in that place. Go to any other large city and see all the life on the streets, sidewalks, in the parking lots, at the parks, the shopping malls, randomly on the streets.

Then fly over Pyongyang.

There is simply NOBODY HOME. They're all dead.

And by the way, if Reuters reports it, you can be assured that it is propaganda.

The District of Columbia is a fairyland and the Mayor just declared an emergency over the 2000 illegals delivered by Texas.

Maybe you could make North Korea your "sister state," if Vermont or Massachusetts or Hawaii doesn't beat you to it.

I am sure it is a poor translation, but the reality is not any less ridiculous.

What is amazing is what incredible control North Korea has over its people. Historically, any population that was so abused by their rulers would have revolted by now. They may not have succeeded, but it would have happened, either an uprising of the masses or a military coup.

Asshole translator. The word to use was obviously "wonderland".

My mother used to talk about how, during WWII, she and other girls would go to USO dances, including the Officers Club at the airport, HQ of the Fourth Fairy Command.

That's how it sounded to me. Cue Python and the military fairies.

BTW, the Norks aren't all dead, just very very thin.

fairy (n.)

c. 1300, fairie, "the country or home of supernatural or legendary creatures; fairyland," also "something incredible or fictitious," from Old French faerie "land of fairies, meeting of fairies; enchantment, magic, witchcraft, sorcery" (12c.), from fae "fay," from Latin fata "the Fates," plural of fatum "that which is ordained; destiny, fate," from PIE root *bha- (2) "to speak, tell, say." Also compare fate (n.), also fay.

Slang meaning "effeminate male homosexual" is recorded by 1895. Fairy ring, of certain fungi in grass fields (as we would explain it now), is from 1590s. Fairy godmother attested from 1820. Fossil Cretaceous sea urchins found on the English downlands were called fairy loaves, and a book from 1787 reports that "country people" in England called the stones of the old Roman roads fairy pavements.
